Good lightweight gigbag wanted.
will you be flogging the incase one once you've found a replacement? i'm desperate for one!
Hi Yeah, I won't need two, so if you're interested let me know. I it's in excellent condition, it's just a tad heavy with my bass in it, my bass is well over 10lbs, and the case is about 8lbs. Kevin -
I've been looking at the Overwater leather ones, does anyone know how heavy they are, and how well padded. I'm currently using an Incase gigbag that I got in the States last year, it's fantastic but it's heavy, so I'm after something a bit lighter, BUT, I don't want to compromise on protection. My bass has a hard case that I usually use when I'm in the car, but I travel by train a lot, and then I use a gigbag. This looks a good one too, I'll have to weigh my Incase one later and see how the weight compares. These are brand new. I ordered them from the makers in January, they erm...arrived yesterday, the makers have had a few problems. These are the 2nd set that I've had, the first set (in April), were totally the wrong size, they let me keep them and sent me these as a replacement. They were ordered for my new Sei bass, but obviously never arrived in time, and the bass is fitted with a set of Bartolinis, and I couldn't be happier with it, so I can't be bothered with the hassle of changing them, and have the bass re-routed. Here's a link to the website http://www.q-tuner.com/bl6.shtml As you can see, they're $320 for a set now, that's about £160, but these can be yours for a bargain £100.

I feel the same about having an all in one head rather than a seperate pre/power amp, I went down that road last year. Jamie, you definitely need to try the Aguilar AG500SC, I'm pretty sure you'll like it, the Epi gear is probably a bit too modern for you, but you never know until you try it. I'm sure Alex at the Gallery will do you a good deal on whatever you decide to get.

Where would you say MOST of your sound comes from?
6stringbassist replied to Tait's topic in General Discussion
All along I've been referring to sound as in sound, as opposed to playing style attributes. I sound like me when I play, regardless of the sounds dialed into my rig, this is through my playing style, bass etc. -
Dare I be vauguely controversial here and say I thinki Hejira is one of Joni's finest and quite possibly Jaco P's most complete and successful studio date ever - the empathy between the two of them is just stunning - Jaco is like a second 'voice' and the songs are some of Joni's best IMHO - I have the Both Sides Now double CD too and it is beautiful - and Mendoza is a monster (check out Brown Street by Joe Zawinul for incredible big band versions of the Weather Report stuff) - but I prefer Joni's voice on her earlier recordings. Just my thoughts on the subject. Mike
Song for Sharon is one of my favourite songs ever, I went to New York last year and visited some of the places mentioned, Wolman rink is in Central park.

Go over to talkbass and PM Ken Jung, he used to use a Thunderfunk amp, he seems to have tried pretty much every amp/cab combination possible at one time or another.
-
I had a U5 and power amp before I bought my Epifani head, to my ears they sound very similar.
-
The 502 is all you'd really need, my 902 is just me being greedy, and impatient cos they didn't have a 502 in stock at the time. The difference is the 902 has two 900 watt power amps, the 502 just has one, so the 902 will power two 4 ohm cabs or four 8 ohm cabs etc. I was close to buying that ul212 on ebay, I could have my 4x10 on one channel, and the 212 on the other, total overkill really, I only play jazz/funk.

The Epi is fantastic, you need to get down to the Gallery and try some stuff out, they usually have a good selection of gear there, I know they had some Aguilar heads in a couple of weeks ago, and another 902. I think the Epi stuff will be whatever you want it to be, modern or old school, it's very versatile, that's the beauty of it.

If it's super clean, with no added warmth, then I'd try something like the EBS HD350.
-
If you fancy a preamp/DI, you should try the Summit TD100 http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...Amplifiers.html Or my particular favourite is the Avalon U5.

Epifani, fantastic sounding, super clean, light, powerful, warm, great EQ (not that you need it !), superb low end, will cope with anything you care to put through it and built like a tank. You're welcome to try mine if you like.

Yeah, the Kingbass will be a lot later in the year though.

Why then do players like Mark King, Jonas Hellborg, John Entwistle, Matt Garrison and Michael Manring, to name just a few, spend years working with luthiers and amp manufacturers to perfect the instruments that they play, and the amplification that they use. If you listen back to players, Mark King is a good example, listen to him live over the last 20 years or so, and you can hear his playing with his Jaydee, sounds different to his Status, which sounds different to his Alembic. There's a great live album where he's he's playing his Alembic through an Eden rig, it sounds so different to his other recordings with other basses and amplification. It makes a nonsense of all the time I spent talking to Martin Petersen, discribing how I wanted my bass to sound. I've played many instruments over the last 20 years, I guess that makes me an experienced player, and they do all sound different, and more importantly they react differently to your playing, inspiring you to play differently in some cases. Imagine Jaco without his trade mark Jazz sound, sure he would still be Jaco if he'd played some other bass, but his sound would have been different. Pino in the 80's with his fretless Stingray, it wouldn't have been the same if he'd used say a fretless Wal instead. You can have, like I've said before, an affect on your sound, playing closer to the bridge, adjusting the angle of attack on the string. I play a lot of jazz, when I do so I play longer notes, and use rest strokes instead of the free strokes that I usually use, but most of the sound is coming from the bass, and amp, but I chose them to sound like they do, much as the players I mentioned earlier in this posting have done. -

I don't see how. Using my bass through my amp/cab sounds one way, if I use a different amp at a gig or a session, it will sound different. No matter how I play it can't make the 'other make' 2x12 sound like my 4x10. The playing will still be the same, same note choice etc. -
Beautiful looking bass Steve. I was a big Mark King fan, and always wanted a Status series 2, I remember when they first came out. A 6 string kingbass is on my list, hopefully later in the year.
My basses. My Spector sounds completely different to my fretless Hohner jazz, which sounds completely different to my Squier VM fretless. The biggest change in my tone comes when I change basses.
That's what I say, your 'sound' is a combination of the strings, the bass, cable, amp and speakers. How you play, ie your fingers, how soft or hard your attack, playing position etc, have an affect on that sound, but they're not actually creating it. Change any part of the setup, and you'll change your sound. -
My favourite is the first solo album by Mark King - Influences.

I think most amps are designed with both the European and US markets in mind, it makes it easier to manufacture. If there isn't a switch on the back then you can usually just swap a couple of leads around inside, I know this is the case with the Alembic preamps, and also Ashdown on their stuff sold in the US. A lot of gear Epifani, Aguilar, Demeter etc has the switchable voltage though.

Try the AG500SC, I think you'll probably like it, I would describe it as being very tube like, and it has a very definite mid bump. Looks like a trip to the bass gallery is on the cards for you

http://www.aguilaramp.com/products_preamps_tonehammer.htm How about this, and a nice light poweramp. Paul Turner has a fantastic sound, a band I played in during the early 90's used to support a band that he played for, he was a fantastic player.

Who are your favourite players, or putting the question a different way, what's your ideal sound ?. I agree about too many knobs, I like to just plug in and play, that's what's put me off Thunderfunks and Eden amps etc.
-
I had one briefly, I found the EQ section to be very limited, there was a review in Bassplayer magazine a year or so ago, it was a good and very accurate review. It's certainly a warm sounding amp, and has a distinctive sound to it, that you have to like because you can't change it owing to the limited EQ section.

6stringbassist replied to Tait's topic in General Discussion
It's mostly down to the bass and the EQ settings on the bass, my amp is usually set flat, sometimes a bit of bass boost on the amp. I always sound like me regardless of which bass, or who's bass I play, ie. choice of notes, timing, phrasing etc, but the actual sound is mostly as above. I mean playing a precision strung with flats, and then playing my Sei strung with round wounds just won't sound then same, or am I missing something ?.
