1. Try Martin Petersen at Sei basses, he has quite a long waiting list though. But he's not that far from you, only about an hours train ride.
2. I have these on my computer at work as a screen saver. Only one is actually mine, but I'd like to own any of them. Some very fine and sexy basses.
3. As the title says. This is currently fitted into my Sei bass, it's about 5 months old. I'm changing it sometime this week for one of the East/ACG filter based pre's, so this will be redundant. It is in perfect working order, and the black knobs are perfectly black and shiny, no wear and tear or scratches. These are £180 new, I'm asking £75 including postage. It's best to email me, I seem to be having a problem getting PM's. My email address is [email protected]
4. Really nice guy to deal with, thanks !.
5. Rubbish, I played two Alembics a couple of years ago in a shop, both were the same model, same electronics etc, through the same amp, with the same settings. Both sounded totally different, the only difference between the two construction wise was the body woods.
6. I'm getting an NS CR4 next weekend, it's used but in as new condition, and plays really nice, (well it will when I get a bit of experience on it). I need some suggestions for new strings to put on it, I think the ones fitted at the moment are the stock ones. I'd like it to be able to sound as double bassy as possible, but still be a bit more versatile. I'd like some flexible, but not too floppy, dark sounding strings, I played a real DB last weekend, and the strings fitted to that were orchestral, so something like that would be good, the guy in the shop didn't know what type of strings they were though, only that the bass was set up for orchestral playing. I take it they're just normal DB strings.
7. I also have a Ritter one that I was given, it's totally unused if you're interested. It's one of these - http://www.ritter-basses-shop.com/shop_det...e&detail=70
8. I'm sure the one I had a few years back for my Aguilar would be the sort of thing you want, it was an actual Aguilar one.
9. I got mine from Mark at bassdirect.
10. I like my gear to look good, and so I look after it, at the end of the day it costs money to buy, so you should look after it. I had a Jaydee Mark King for 10 years, it was my 1st really good bass, I PX'ed it for a Wal and the guy didn'y believe it was 10 years old. If I buy used I always make sure that it's in good condition before I buy it. I guess I'm just fussy. But you can guarantee that if I'm selling something it will have been well cared for.
11. What strings do you use on your 5 string ?. I use DR Lo-Rider nickels, a nice mellow, but still bright sound, and just the right amount of tension. Why not just use a 5 string set like you already use, and add a C string seperately, that's what I tend to do, I find it hard to get a 6 string set of the Lo-rider nickels, my C is by Elixir. It also makes it cheaper when it comes to new string time each month, I don't change the C when I change the others.
12. Sreve Swallow uses a metal pick, he gets a great sound, just practise I suppose. http://www.last.fm/music/Steve+Swallow
13. Check out his forum on talkbass. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=42 I've never seen him use a looper, I can't hear that link to him playing, I don't have speakers unfortunately, I'm at work. There's a really good DVD out, it's a few years old now, but he basically shows you how he played the tracks on Thonk, and is really worth getting.. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Michael-Manring-Ba...3009&sr=8-1 The 'Enormous room' is from 'Thonk', that is just him playing in real time, no looper as far as I know.
14.
What bothers me sometimes is that through the power of internet I experience bass-players picking on musicians like Berlin, Wooten, etc... with comments like "That playing sucks" "Terrible" "worst playing I've ever seen or heard". When you do have the opportunity of meeting these anonymous bassplayers with their big opinions about practically everybody and you see how théy play (with sometimes the occasional sloppy octave as their biggest sign of any musical imagination) I sometimes wonder where those people get the nerve to criticize world famous musicians who have worked their asses off to get as good as they are.. I'm not saying that well-known musicians are closer to God but before I post any comment on somebody's playing I think about my personal goals, the commitment of certain musicians, their struggles and achievements. What certain bassists have accomplished (and that goes for Cliff Burton, McCartney, Mick Karn, Lemmy, etc....) should be slightly considered before one posts any cheap or quick comment imho...
Well said. It used to annoy me when I saw people making stupid comments about someone elses playing, there is the now infamous Janek Gwizdala and Steve Lawson thread earlier in the year as an example of stupid and yobbish posting. Now I just ignore it and laugh at them. The people making the comments obviously think in their own minds that their own playing is better, when in reality it isn't. Which is why the people the comments are about, are making records and travelling around the world playing to audiences, and the person making the comment probably doesn't get any further than playing Mustang Sally to drunks at the local.
15. My 6 string Sei is about 11 or 12lbs, I don't find it uncomfortable at all to play. I use either a comfort strap, or a padded leather Fender strap, I can play for 3 or 4 hours with no problem. I have a problem carrying it in its gigbag though, the bag weighs 10lbs on its own.
16.
Being new to this bass lark, I'm just starting to discover great bass players and have started to listen to other music besides metal!! I know that he his basses have the ability to do weird tunings, but I was wondering what does Michael Manring use to get all of his looping sounds?
He doesn't, it's just him playing, sometimes he plays three basses at the same time, but usually it's just him and his hyperbass.
17.
Soliloquy is yet to be toppled as the greatest solo bass achievement, and somehow I doubt anyone but Manring himself has the ability to do it.
Soliloquy has to be one of my all time favourite albums, not just bass albums, I love it. I must be very sad and need to get out more, I love listening to bass albums, I have all of Manrings stuff, the one with him, Yves Carbonne and Dominic Di Piazza is amazing, it's three fantastic musicians playing together, and I mean together, creating music. Don't get me wrong, I like to hear bass played well in its so called proper role, but I really like it as a solo instrument. I'm really looking forward to this album, and I'd love to get to see the tour, one of these days I'm going to get to see Michael Manring play.
18. Try the Status ones, they feel really nice, I hate really stiff strings, and I found the TI's to be too loose, the Status were just right. It's best to phone them though, they do have more gauges available than the website suggests. They're also pretty cheap.
19. I've been playing DB quite a bit recently, and it's really weird having to think 'up the neck', rather than just across it. I really, really miss the extra strings, and having no low Eb is a major pain. My lines just aren't as inventive/creative as on my 6, simply because the notes aren't there, a bit like painting a picture with only half the colours available to you.
20. My 1st 6 string was a Flamboyant headless, they are such nice basses, as are all Sei's.
21. Have a browse on the jazzwise website, they may have something you fancy there. http://www.jazzwise.com/catalog/ Or just get a real book.
22. That'll be really nice, I see you're going for the notch then. What's the current wait time ?.
23. I didn't recollect the name, but I've heard that story before, Steve is an amazing player, who gets a great sound. I was listening to the John Schofield trio album 'En route' the other day, amazing.
24. Very nice Lawrence, can I ask what you're getting in its place.
25. I'm in 24 of their clubs, I don't own/use any of the gear, but it's nice to feel wanted. Funnily enough, the one club I could properly join is the Sei owners club, but I've never gotten around to joining it, I'll pop over now and join, that'll make it 25. And no I don't think bassists are strange, no stranger than any other musician really.
