1. Just to say, this actual bass was built originally for my good friend Paul Ruthven (slacker42 on here) - and indeed, its the only one with a maple fingerboard (complete with abalone inlays!). It was up for sale in the Bass Centre about 10 years ago as I recall. Cheers! Nick
2.
I'm sure he'll be well pleased when he gets his hands on it, after everyone else has had a go. Did you play it, Nick?
I held it but did not play it! Dawn was not keen on me touching it!!
3. Just to add (despite all this doom and gloom) - the bass is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. Given its rarity, I'd put it up for around £900. I recently bought a brand new one (StingRay fretless, 3 band eq in 3 tone sunburst) and the retail is up at just over £1700. StingRay basses are fairly easy to find, but yours is a rare model and as such will command a better price. Nick
4. Lovely job! I saw it down at the factory a few weeks ago - note the matt finish on the back of the neck! I bet Todd's well pleased!
5.
yeah, I realised my mistake last night when I saw that infamous avatar picture you have! I remember that one popping up on TB too!
So has someone nicked my avatar pic then?? Jamie - yes, thats your old bass with a new finish!
6.
Doctor of the Bass = Fender32 on talkbass? There was an English lad called Andy who lived in Germany, had a bass that looked pretty much exactly like this...I GAS'ed for one of these for a long time!
Not me on Talkbass! Just to say that Dave's StingRay is awesome - it looks fantastic now its been resprayed!
7.
The futures not orange ??
..its yellow! Hehe!
8. Here we go, dons flameproof helmet! Slap is good! I can do it very well so I'm told. I like it! It has its place, like everything else! If you can do it, do it. If not, do not criticise it! I can't tap for toffee but I love Stu Hamm's work for example. All that's needed is for me to sit down, practice it and broaden my own horizons. Heheheheh! N x
9. Allo I've got one of the wedge jobs - used it in a theatre show a few weeks ago and it really does the job!
10.
I've got two of these and you're right, they are superb. Yours is a CSB 380, which is pretty much identical to the CSB 300. They were made between 81 and 85. Value-wise you're looking at £70-£130, depending on condition and which way the wind happens to be blowing at the time - they're not exactly sort after, which does make them a bargain when they do show up. Edited to make some sense!
...I've got four! In fact, one of them being my first ever bass! Superb instruments!
11. Would love this Fosk but have a nasty tax bill to pay this month - doh! Might be in a better position next month but I'm sure it will have sold by then. ATB. Nick
12. Thats a lovely bucket! The Rick looks nice too! Have a bump!
13. Superb little basses, those IGBs! Buy it!
14.
they are totally fab!!
People are perhaps fed up with me saying `I've got one of those!' but I have and they really are the business, for the money! Have a bump mate (Any news on the babee? I too am expecting...a Dominos pizza! ATB! Nick
15. Kiwi's `StatusRay' has been around, 4 owners I think (including me o course!) Now residing with our very own StingRay King, Dave Anderson! He's got loads of em! I've got two now! Watch out Dave, I'm loving that Ray tone!
16. As a fellow pro player/teacher, I would fully recommend Steve - I've seen him play and he's very very good, and most importantly, a really nice bloke! Bit like me but based in Brum!!! Hope you are keeping well m8! Cheers Nick
17. Looks good Eddy! Would you be up for meeting somewhere like the services just off the M1 near East Mids Airport? PM also sent! Cheers Nick
18. Very nice sir! Here's mine, number 61 (close eh!?): pic taken by previous owner, Mark Mannering-Smith from Fleet. I bought it off of Ebay - Mark had it from new - it still had the original strings on it from '89 when I got it!
19. I've just `rediscovered' StingRay basses recently and am now using a teal green 4 stringer for a lot of pub gigs that I'm now doing whilst the downturn has robbed me of a great deal of corporate work! The sound is perfect - a real underpinning bass sound. Are you looking at trades at all? Nick
20.
Thanks for a great lesson Nick, I was quite surprised you took such a liking to my bass considering your "ample" collection. I was quite shocked about the sound of the markbass, quite different to what I remember. Ive been working on those scales and my technique already See I didnt tell them your secret, I told you I wouldnt
Nice one! That Precision is a great bass! Nick (the Widdler!)
21. Very sad news; I never knew Nick but he sounds like he was one of the good guys. RIP. Nick
22.
If he goes with the testicle theory it would be like a bunch of grapes down there.
That's why I can't walk/sit down properly! More like three bunches of grapes! I'm of the opinion that if you want a bass, buy it! Sad thing is, I've been doing that on a regular basis over the last 25 years or so! I think I've owned around 150 basses since I started. Now if only I'd kept all of them...!!!! Nick
23. Definitely a Gordy bass that! They made two models in that shape, one was the `Blueshift', the other was the `Redshift' - one had a single soapbar pickup, the other had two. The bass in the pic has been modded with a J type unit at the bridge. Gordy also produced a `Status' copy! (naughty!). The original `Gordon Smith' company consisted of two guys, a Mr Gordon, and a Mr Smith (good name that). Gordon left to form `Gordy' and I believe Smith carried on... I've never played a Gordy but they did get very good write-ups back in the 80's (as noted earlier). They tended to favour Schaller 3D bridges and machine heads!
24. Thanks Pete! Plate looks great, really sets the teal green off nicely. Cheers Nick
