1. Allo! Good thread! Anyway, as Mcgraham pointed out, I tend to favour 30's on most of my working basses but do use 45s on my Rickenbacker and one of my Precisions (mainly for stuff that requires the use of a plectrum) - I personally find the 30's don't respond too well with a pick when played hard! However, for most stuff I do, the 30's do the biz (mainly due to my arthritic first finger on my right hand) - there used to be a great debate on this as I recall over on the Level 42 Webdigest as to the benefits of such light gauges! I'm of the opinion `let the amp do the work'! And of course, as has already been said, find whats best for you and you own playing style...
2. Allo! Pete is a star - asked whether anyone could help me find a white scratchplate for a StingRay bass, Pete replied, plate came a day after! Sorted! Cheers mate! Nick
3. Hallo! I've got the same bass - they are excellent - you won't find a better J type bass for the money! They only come in white and the rrp is £319 (I think!). Have a BUMP on me! Nick
4. Add my 65 to the total of 1351= 1416
5. Hmm! Good question, might have to include these girls.... However, I'd still really like some more! I'd 'ave: Mouradian CS-74 `Chris Squire' model Alembic Series II point body Alembic Distillate Alembic Stanley Clarke Wal Custom 4 string fretted (and fretless!!) Ken Smith 6 string Status S2 Custom (in all string formats, fretted and less!) Status Kingbass Artist mk II GB Rumour 4 GB Spitfire 4 Overwater original series Lace Helix 4 1960 Fender P 1962 Fender J ..the list goes on!
6.
With such amazing instruments available in that sort of price bracket, why would anyone buy a new Stingray?
I've recently bought a brand-new StingRay fretless (but I got it at a special `artiste' price!) - to be fair the build quality is excellent. The retail price is staggering (I think its around £1,700 for one like mine - highly figured ash body in 3 tone burst - very Pino etc), but then, a brand new GB is also pretty high - if I was more wealthy I'd go get Bernie to build me one etc. Good quality used gear like Steve's ex-GB featured here is well worth going for at the price its up for, and I for one am hoping to get something sorted out!
7. A very special welcome to my good friend Ian! Ian was very instrumental (no pun intended!) in helping to set up a number of bass related websites and Yahoo clubs when the Net was still new - so welcome back mate! I think I still owe you a beer sir!
8.
Jings that tasty flamed maple of doctor bass looks strangely familiar !
I know! Welcome to Basschat, Ian Midi! The father of the Pangborn site! Have sent ye a message sir! Cheers Nick
9. +1 to all the above; I'd also add `patience' to that list - sitting in the pit* for three hours whilst waiting for the lighting director to be happy with the gobo placement can fray ones nerves but there we are! * or bar!
10. Superb collection! I had a metallic black one some years ago - so powerful! I recall the first time I ever saw one on TV, John Taylor was playing with `The Power Station' with his white one! Mark Griffiths (the Shadows current bassist) used to own a pink one like yours Mike - it was up for sale some time ago at Phoenix Soundworks near Northampton.
11.
I can't wait to get my hands on this- it'll be a real change for me from the usual passive Fender-type stuff!
Well done! I've had two Series I models over the years, mine both had the P and J configuration but I'm sure the twin J's will be superb (in fact I always wanted that type!!) Watch out for them thar lizards though! (I'm a fellow D.I. fan! - you know what I mean!)
12.
I think you need to do "The Twelve Step Plan" for bass addiction.
I think you should lend me the money for it (the bass, not the 12 step plan) - hehe!
13. The early stuff they did still stands out as great music, Sandstorm being one of my alltime faves! On saying that, there are some great songs on the bigger selling albums, such as The Sleepwalkers etc etc. They did some weak stuff too though, but that can be said of any big act. Overall I was a massive fan, still like to get me Alembic out and have a play along now and again!
14.
Yep! It was my GB!!! It's a lovely bass and is being sold by Darren as I chopped it in against the AC recently. It plays really well and looks great. Steve
Twill be filling my GB V hole in my fence if all goes to plan!! Mwahahahah! Nick
15.
Believe he did trade it in at the Bass Merchant recently (Apologies Steve, talking about you like you weren't here )
T'was indeed Birdy's GB.
16. Fosk! The Warmoth has been de-knobbed! I'm not a massive single-cut fan but that ACG looks incredible! Nice one mate! The Fender looks good too!
17. Very tasty! Reminds me of my first ever JD, which I bought in '88 (aged 17!) from Exchanges in Birmingham; in those days it was always `major league' excitement going in there! Mine was like this one, a Series III; mine had a blueburst round the body edge! Nice!
18. Fully agree with you! John had 10 guys working for him at one point and to quote him, `things got way out of hand'! in terms of the amount of orders etc. They were producing 10 basses a week around that era! Which is a lot of work. My current main basses are my trusty Vigier Arpege (graphite neck) and a very old Status Series 2000 (#27). Anyway, lets hope someone here gets the red GA24!!!
19. Thanks Lefty! Basically, I'm a child of the 80's - was 11 years old in '82 when I started out playing and being a massive fan of that certain bass player from the Isle of Wight, I kind of got into JD's/Status basses etc etc in a big way. Back in 1997, I co-founded a Yahoo club for Jaydee and I've learned a lot about his basses over the many years I've been a fan! I've owned many such basses, including Mark's famous red Classic bass - the internet has certainly helped John's work - I saw him earlier this week and he has orders for 40 instruments, which equates to two years work! Funnily enough, most of the orders are for guitars! (his version of the SG). Now where's me gaffa tape?

Then again it might be my eyesight! It still looks edible though! My first foray into mega-expensive custom made basses was in fact a 4 string Custom Thumb with LEDs and gold hardware! Traded it in for a Wal!
21.
If anyone was gonna know, it was Dr Bass!
Ok! The original Jaydee bass (which later became known as the Classic) was designed in 1977 by John Diggins and a bass player called Richard Ford from Birmingham who played in a band called `Muscles'. This bass closely resembled an Alembic Series I (John had never seen an Alembic and once he had, subsequent basses were changed, mainly the headstock etc). The jd range consisted of a number of models which shared the same body shape and electronics - only major differences were the construction in terms of woods, laminations etc etc. The Classic bass became known as the `Mark King Model' once Mark became rather well known, and there are three different body sizes; the Series I, the Series II (slightly narrower) and the Series III which, shape-wise, looks like a scaled down Series I. George Anderson from Shakatak met John around 1983 and they came up with the G.A. 24 model - it does resemble the MK models in terms of construction but the pickups are much closer together and the body shape is different. and of course it has the 24 fret neck!! Electronics-wise, its the same as the MK. Check out: http://www.jaydeecustomguitars.co.uk - there's the complete range featured there with pictures and data! Cheers! Nick
22. Certainly is a George Anderson (Junior) 24 Fret model! Nick
23.
Thanks for all the replies. I think I might plan a visit to PMT (great name, whoever thought that would be a good idea? ) and Reverb over the next couple of weeks. However, sounds like it'll have to be Denmark Street to satisfy the mooching requirements, especially as it's only £18 on the train on a Saturday. Oh, and doctor_of_the_bass - 63 basses? 63 BASSES? That's not an interest, that's a disease
Correct!
24.
Hi all I feel the need to spend a day mooching round guitar shops, but haven't a clue what's on offer any more. In the old days, Musical Exchanges in Birmingham used to be a fantastic place to spend a day, full of loads of second hand kit, as well as brand new stuff. The Bass Centre was also just around the corner. However, I know they've both closed down (and changed hands several times), so I don't have a clue where to look these days. I've looked on t'internet, and can't find much in the way of help, so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? Incidentally, I live about 45 mins from Birmingham, so it's probably not too much more of an effort to head to London on the train, and maybe look there, so any recommendations of good shops to check out in London would also be appreciated. I've never done the Denmark Street thing, so maybe that's an option? I'm not looking for anything in particular (although maybe a Jetglo Rickky if I see one!), but I'd like to find somewhere with a decent selection of 2nd hand stuff. Thanks for any suggestions.... Mark.
Hi Mark! As you may realise from my avatar/sig - I am one of the top moochers out here!!!!! PMT in Birmingham have a nice bass dept and have a couple of great guys there, Dave Sherriff and Dave Clarke - its worth a visit just to see the shop as its one of the biggest in the UK. To be honest, the golden days of seeing fantastic stocks of good secondhand gear in shops are long gone, the internet has taken over that side of the market. Perhaps one day there will be a revival but for now, the Basschat For Sale section may be the only place to go! There are other shops to check out though, most notably The Bass Merchant in Colchester, Bass Direct in Warwick (right on your doorstep!!) and not forgetting the Gallery in Camden!
25.
This must be the first KB2 to be sold on for the original owner I would say.....
I think Alex from the gallery sold one a while ago on Ebay which was one of the first batch (I think it was one of the quilted maple models that Mark used on tour). This might be the second such sale.
