Get your STATUS-GRAPHITE basses out!
The KB2 looks good as a fiver. The extra string fills out the body a bit more. That design grows on me all the time.
That walnut model looks incredible! As my brother Rich will attest, the body shape really works in the flesh - very thin (and crispy!) at the edges! My MK-II fund has taken some hits recently but its being rebuilt at the moment! -
John said it would take about a month to do.
Hehe! He's had my Series I for just over a year...went in for a total respray! Bless him! He's one of the best. Mine should be ready very soon - can't wait! I'd personally go for the planet inlays - they really set the basses off nicely - your bass is a Series III body shape. The serial numbers usually follow a numeric format for example: 05596 would indicate 1985. Thom probably had it built in the late 80's /early 1990s - the teardrop string anchors first appeared on the Calibas bass which first appeared around '88. Nice one!

16th notes etc - what are they?
doctor_of_the_bass replied to Cornfedapache's topic in Theory and Technique
All makes sense, thanks! Sorta rings various bells in my brain from my days at school in music lessons... I'm not even going to start about the random timings our writer uses... 12/7 was one according to our drummer who's the most advanced music theorist of the lot of us!!!
He must have invented a new note length value then - perhaps its me but there is no such thing as a Seventh note! -
Anyone know of a similar design to a Wal Bass?
His ego was bigger than Maradonnas. If he didn't think of a song, he left the stage while we played it. And he liked some complete sh*te.
Ian! Are you the same guy featured once upon a time in Bassist Magazine's, `My Bass Is a 12 String Hamer'!? Nice set of basses on your page! Nick -
Dick Nolan (It Bites) - What's he doing now?
doctor_of_the_bass replied to iamthewalrus's topic in General Discussion
Dick was working with the Alan Parsons Project a couple of years ago - not sure as to what hes up to right now! I gigged his old blue Zon Legacy some years ago with a view to purchasing it (was on sale at the Bass Centre in Birmingham) but didn't get on with it! A good mate of mine had Frank Dunnery perform in his front room a couple of summers ago - what a player!! Massive bloke now - very interesting night - lots of stories about when he was young etc. It Bites were incredible - they played here in Peterborough once in '87 but only 54 people turned up....typical of this town! -
Jon is a lovely chap! Thoroughly great to deal with! Cheers! Nick

Hi! A very close relation of mine is looking to sell part of his guitar collection - he's not really internet savvy so I'm acting only as intermediary. Pics are to follow. The collection consists of: Fender Stratocaster 1964 L-Series - original 60's guitar - the real deal - NOT Custom shop etc. Fiesta red. Gibson ES-335 - again from 1964, cherry red with Gibson case. Gibson Byrdland - 1974 model with Gibson case, tobacco burst. Epiphone Casino - 1962 in tobacco sunburst with Bigsby trem. Gretsch Country Gentleman - 1967 model ala George Harrison - painted F holes etc. Brown colour. He's also selling two more recently built Fenders... Fender Custom Shop `57 Stratocaster - very Hank Marvin, birdseye maple neck, Fiesta red. gold h/ware. Fender USA Telecaster `52 model reissue in natural. All prices on application to serious enquirers - these are all very fine instruments; obviously, he is willing to sell them individually but if someone wants the entire collection, then fine! Please pm me in the first instance. Cheers Nick

Allo! Definitely looks like figured bubinga! Talking of facing replacement, Jaydee has done such work in the past, for example, Thom Boyle's original #001 bass has had its facings changed twice - there was a GA24 in the workshop recently which had new facings added. As noted, it would require a read of its documentation in order to evaluate the full story - to me, the bottom horn looks more pointed than normal, but then thats perhaps an optical illusion!
MB1. I have had previous dealings with Martin Sim and the L.e.ds are put in the bass Without causing any damage to any part of the bass or its finish. So its not been refinished due to that. However Sims also do refinishing Too!....and the quality of that work is quite exceptional too!...as..... no doubt Mr Beedster on the forum will justfy.
I was looking at that bass earlier today and normally, Sims would put one of their own battery compartments in complete with a Sims logo - the square battery compartment looks like its a Warwick original....! My old Custom Thumb was the same - it had a 3 battery compartment, two for the circuit and one for the LEDs (Warwick's own which predated Sims by four years). I've got a sneaky feeling that the LEDs are not Sims... Hmmm!
What I meant in my post was I don't think there is any need to worry about the current state of the bass re the controls, even if they weren't the original fit it may be hard to know one way or the other, and I would suggest the new owner enjoys the bass for what it is. In the mean time I am still working on how to get another Pangborn!
Which model would you like? Got a nice Warrior, perhaps a Chieftain would suit one!?

Silver Bodied Steinberger XL2 - 1 of the 30!
doctor_of_the_bass replied to BASSISACE's topic in Gear Gallery
niice, that's a cool bass one of the old carbon ones? (I don't know much about steinies)
oh yes, its a real one! No offence to anyone with a Spirit model! -
Wonder why Steinbergers haven't been mentioned. There's not that much difference is there? Having said that,I'll probably get a 'proper 'Status one day.....
No comparison imho! I've got a Steinberger and whilst it is a fine bass, the Status basses I own tend to leave it on the hard shoulder! Mwahaha!

Wanna black XL-2 to keep it company??! Cheers! Nick (howdy Mike!) -
I can recall seeing at least one other JD with the same kind of knobs so they may be original. I think John has a policy of using whatever is available in the workshop at the time. He fitted some gold Sperzel machineheads to a JD I owned because gold Schallers were not available and I also recall seeing a JD with Ibanez tuners that the owner swore were original as well.
Allo! The knobs may well be original - they are not the `usual' domed style P bass type knobs - if you know what I mean! John does use whats in stock - there was a Session bass on Ebay a while ago with the larger Schaller machine heads (as used on the Wal basses).
Hey I'm still quite not there yet.. If the pick-ups are supposed to be passive, why is there a battery? I always thought only active pick-ups used a battery, maybe I've missed something? Tension it is, and it works perfectly. This is the thing why I purchased it, I wouldn't have made any modifications under any circumstances.
Hi! The EMG pickups are active - they are powered by the battery but the tone circuit is Passive! Cheers Nick

LMII Head, now then, what cab...
doctor_of_the_bass replied to karlthebassist's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'd personally recommend the Markbass 2 x 10 Traveller and the 12 inch model - just bought one of these (thanks Rayfw) and they constitute an awesome `mini-stack' coupled up with that head! Pop down to the studio sometime - text me to let me know when you are free and you can have a play through them! Cheers! Nick -
So the Aria SB isn't a classic, but the Yam BB is? Hmm. This is all very subjective. Boutique nobody? John Paul Jones would disagree! The Mansons have been making basses for decades. I would suggest that the Kestrel bass from the early 80s is something of a design classic: Define 'cool', define 'dated'. It's in the eye of the beholder.
Thanks Rich! I rest my case...!

SOLD...Early 90's Status Series 2 headed..SOLD.
doctor_of_the_bass replied to slapmonsta's topic in Basses For Sale
Sorry - when I said `core' wood, I was referring to the `wings' - the central section (where the neck is set) is walnut! The accent layer between the facing (looks like a cross between flamed and quilted maple) and mahogany is maple, tinted yellow (mine was very similar!). Yes, I remember the phone call!
