Status Streamline With Full LEDs - NOW SOLD
doctor_of_the_bass replied to Macko1968's topic in Basses For Sale
Lovely! I was a Streamline Sceptic until I actually played one - they really do the biz! In fact, I've had a guy call me wanting lessons - he's never owned a bass and asked me to recommend a maker; I mentioned that Status are of course one of the best makers in the world - he rings me today to say he's ordered a Streamline! -
SOLD...Early 90's Status Series 2 headed..SOLD.
Hmm. OK let's try to distill that a bit: Vigier - I've never seen an old Vigier, anybody got a snap of one? That's a new bass to me. John Birch - Would like to see one. Looks like he just makes copies of American basses. Gordon-Smith - I think their Les Paul models are modern classics and I love them, but I've never seen a GS bass - again, pics? Chris Eccleshall - Another American copier? Jaydee - Too modern. Aria SB range - Bit plain, but the best suggestion yet. Yamaha BB range - Agreed! Not-American Classic Ashley Pangborn - Look just like Jaydees or Alembics, no, not good enough. Manson - Does he even make basses? Another boutique nobody - NO! Wal - Agreed! Not-American Classic if you can find an older one or the original body shape. MkII and later basses don't count! Overwater - Too modern, too exclusive. Hagstrom - Inspired by American designs but still with original features and still cool. I say Not-American Classic. I've never played one though and they don't look too clever in the "giggable" category to me, but maybe that's just me. Egmond - Best example I could find looked like a really cheap Fender knock-off. Pics? Ned Callan - Would like to see some examples. All I'm finding is Shergold links. Washburn - Can't think of a "classic" Washburn, I remember them for (admittedly good) budget guitars in the late '80s. Were they around before then? Tune - Too modern. Ibanez - Again, great suggestion, I declare the Musician a Not-American Classic, always tempted by them when they come up for sale. Vantage - Would need to see classic examples, I thought they were a relatively modern brand. Riverhead - Can only find '80s models. Did they do anything else? Westone - I remember lots of people learning on Thunder models. OK then - Not-American Classic - but ugly! El Maya - Didn't they just do Fender copies? Fernandes - Didn't they just do Fender copies?
Oh dear! Looks like I've been shot down in flames!!
Hello Fellow bassplayers! Let me introduce myself: my name is Arjen, I live in the Netherlands. And Obviously, I play the bass(guitar). I've been a reading along on this forum for a while, and i really like the amount of knowledge and experience what is being shared here. :-) General info: Bands: Epsilon (alt. Rock) Gear: Fender Bassman 135 + 4*12'' cab (and next to it my Gallien-Krueger 700RB-II + 4*10'' cab) Fender-like bass (my main instrument) That's my most important gear, i've got some more basses but I dont have any pics of them right now Groeten! (Greetings) arjen
Hallo Arjen! Welcome to the world of Basschat! I really like that black bass - did you modify the body shape yourself? It looks like you have a Schaller bridge on there - excellent! All the Bass! Nick
So all the "classic" basses seem to be American; your Fenders, Rickenbackers, Gibsons to an extent. What non-American basses have the same Rock n' Roll cachet? Yes there's the Hofner Violin Bass, but what else? I'm looking more for older designs, not stuff like the Status body shape or the Thumb which I think can be considered modern classics. I want stuff more timeless than that. Some of the Shergolds I've seen in the For Sale section seem to fit the bill, so if anyone's got photos of those please share them, but what else is out there and actually cuts it as a gigging bass?
I actually disagree with the Status comment as the early models can technically now be classed as vintage instruments! And they are timeless - my old Series 2000 #27 looks just as good today as it did back when I was a gangly yoof! Anyway, I'm an old git! Other classic non-US fully giggable basses could (IMHO) be; Vigier (oooh lalala!) John Birch Gordon-Smith Chris Eccleshall Jaydee (Classic, MK model, Roadie range, GA24 model, Session model, Video etc) Aria SB range Yamaha BB range (original models from late 70's etc) Ashley Pangborn (Warlord range, Warrior and Chieftain models) Manson Wal Overwater Hagstrom Egmond Ned Callan Washburn Tune (see Washburn) Ibanez (Musician, Studio, Artist etc) Vantage Riverhead Westone El Maya Fernandes etc etc etc

Anyway a + 1 from me too... he bought a bass a while back and was great to deal with.... Jay
Sorry Jay, I did have a look but appears that I've missed it!
Which ones do you reckon look the best, and provide a nice growly warm tone? And what are your woods of choice? Pics appreciated
Just in case anyone wanted to re-read this!!! Hehehe! I've got a fair bit of experience here through building the E Basses back in the day - Quilted maple facing with a mahogany body core, bolt-on maple neck with rosewood board! Growly but warm. IMO.

Hehe! Nice one m8!

Allo! Just done a trade with Colin (aka Kol) - I've known him since the `old days' when he was a bona-fide Klingon* and the only forums available were at Yahoo and he's one of the best! Great to see you again Kol (or is that Kom!). Kol now has my Status 5 string and I've got his Jaydee Roadie fretless (which was once Rich's bass!). * its true! Kol, have you got any pix?

Chris Squire in "I play a Fender" shock
Actually, that little section of your post seemed a bit garbled with a typo or two, so I took an educated guess at what you had meant to type. Now that you've clarified, my post seems rather redundant, except for an opportunity to mention the 'potatohead' 8 strings.
Msut leanr tu tipe! Sorry Jon! Yes, there were only two such basses, as noted! Am I right in saying that the `bass' strings were above the treble (octave) strings such that you would strike the thicker string first with a pick downstroke unlike most 8 stringers which have the treble strings on top!? Incidentally, I'm putting a new band together, its mainly Dire Straits and Chris Rea material - gonna call it Dire Rea!!! (sorry!) Cheers! Nick -
It was mainly the Moo's basses and Todd's Retroglide. I couldn't take any as I was in the van and wasn't prepared to leave flight cases on view outside the Dome I'm sure there'll be a proper international bash at some point!
Lets organise it Rich! -

!!! WHAT HAVE I LET MYSELF IN FOR?
doctor_of_the_bass replied to BIG.J's topic in General Discussion
You'll need some Taurus bass pedals to get the really authentic Rutherford bass sound Ricky for the faster melodic high end parts and the pedals for a great big hefty drone sitting underneath everything. A really core part of the early Genesis sound.
Absolutely! My set of Taurus pedals is in need of a rebuild really but I used to use them a lot in my old band - we used to crank them up through the PA (big JBL rig, 10K) and I used to be able to rearrange furniture...they are just incredible. I use a set of Roland PK-5 midi pedals hooked up with an Oberheim or Yamaha sound module - no match for the Moog though. -

Awwww! Great pix mate - wish I could have been there! Moo's place is like an Aladdin's cave of tasty treats - incidentally, I used to own his FPPR 2000 and Jon Randle (Dr and the Medics) used to own the early Series II - Jon had the LEDs fitted to it. I got the red one back in 2001 and at that point, I also had the ice blue one; they were reunited for a short time at Moos when I took the blue one down there! -
Chris Squire in "I play a Fender" shock
doctor_of_the_bass replied to OldGit's topic in General Discussion
I'm pretty sure that Chris used the Jazz on Parallels live as well, at least on the GFTO tour. His old Tele bass was stolen (Chris mentions this on the Fish Out Water DVD), but has recently been found at auction and bought by a friend of his. Small correction to an earlier post - he didn't use the Jazz on Roundabout in the Relayer era, but an 8 string Rickenbacker.
If you read my post closely, I was using `roundabout' as a pun (i.e. a round about) - I've seen footage of Squire playing a Jazz in tour with Moraz on keys (which would have been the Relayer era) - yes, he actually would have used the 8 string Ricky on that track (one of only two ever made like that - the other one belonged to Entwistle!). Chris was recently in hospital with a blood clot in his leg - lets hope he's ok. -

Allo! Just to add I've recently bought another 614 and it really is a great bass! Tell your mate that the guy with 61 basses* rates it very highly!!!!! * he is also modest and very very poor!!
Indeed - I saw him on TV not long ago playing a Precision and getting that 'unmistakeable Rickenbacker sound' out of it.
Was it a silvery grey colour? He has a Lakland Bob Glaub in that finish! In fact, he did use a customised Tele bass in the early 70s and roundabout (hehehe0 the Relayer era, was using a Jazz bass onstage. -
Welcome to the wide world of Basschat! All the best! Nick

This has happened to me in the past when trying to login. I always get off the net and go back in again, normally this resolves the issue! As they say in IT - turn it off then on again!
