1.
See the pic below.
Thanks GeeCee - as Tommy Cooper would say, its `just like that!'
2.
MB1. Henry definately played a Westone Thunder (2a possibly) bass through a Dynacord bass combo!.
He then went onto use Alligator gear! And a Roland synth bass!
3.
I remember it well, they use to play Westone guitars I think.
Absolutely - Henry had a couple of Thunder IIIAs- super bass player! Deidre lacked feel imho - very clever player but just felt that she could have let rip a bit more! Geoff Nicholls was great - nice drummer.
4. Blimey! That is rather unusual - never seen one of those before! Be great if you can take a full length front shot (ooer!) Cheers Nick
5. Back in the mid '80s when I was a young bass cadet, I bought a fretless Hohner Arbor bass (p style) with a plain rosewood board - wore it down within a month due to my love of Pino (Ku Ku Kurama was one of my fave lines of his) and playing Mark King lines on it! Great days!
6.
You should be ashamed of yourself...
Great amp with lots of bite....! I used to own one of their electronic percussion amps; basically this amp in a 2 x 10 format with bullet horn - one of the best amps I've had!
7. Thanks Shaggy My bass is just like the Supreme model (third one in from the left, bottom row)! The frets have been filed down to the tang underneath the G and D strings so the board has two distinct levels.
8.
I scare myself, just thinking about Tom Dolby.
I too was quite scared, finding myself knee deep in water, under a pylon...! X
9. Ah! The halcyon days! That particular song reminds me so much of the end of term school discos we used to go to! The angst, high emotions and paper cups full of orange squash! (not to mention my Dad's white Italian shoes that I used to `borrow'!!!). Actually, the bass on that track is mostly a Yamaha DX-7 - I recall being most upset at not being able to recreate that actual tone whilst trying out a BB2000 in Chappells (in Central Milton Keynes, back in the day!). Would love to go back to those innocent days...! Nick
10.
The Wilkes Bass that started this thread...looks like NT but is actually bolt-on. Anyone played or owned one of these?
Nice looking bass that! Mine's the same shape but in a very standard black paint finish - same headstock shape. They used all Schaller hardware.
11.
I've had the vintage modified maple affair & that was a really good bass, if lacking in a little output & sophistication in the hardware dept. But more recently I tried one of the newer Classic Vibe jazzes, in the white with tort guard. What a bass! Just plugged into a cheap Peavey combo, it just oozed "that" jazz sound - The one you've always looked for! Hardware is much improved on the CVJ as well. Go try one. Rich.
Rich is dead right - I've got one of these and its a belter! Buy one!
12.
That's a real nice bass!
Sure is! Just for info - its a Series III bodied Roadie I fretless.
13. Ped! You look stunning mate, what ya doing tonight? x Incidentally, the orange flower is known in the trade as `crocosmia', part of the same family as the gladioli/irises!
14.
If they rehearse at that time they're not proper musicians.
The idea was to save time on the Friday night plus they were building the set for the show so we couldn't do the get in - hence the early start today! Knackered now though! Nick
15. A lovely pair of musos!!! Just for info - the fretless appears to have Schaller replacement machineheads - ala Wal! Cheers! Nick
16.
Thank God for that! I can use me money for a Status now! BB
...gotta luvly liddle XL-2 sat here! xxx
17. Got a days worth of work tomorrow (and for the next two Saturdays) in theatre - need to be set up and ready to play for 8:00am! WAHHH! Anyone else had this!? Nick (off to bed soon!)
18.
I don't know about retro-fitting trus rods, Steve, and Rob and the crew are away for two weeks hols so can't get an answer right now. I always thought that no trus rod would be a good idea but I think it's probably better to have one in the newer necks. Not that this is a bad bass in any way, but it's interesting to see how the quality of the instruments has improved over the years. My S2 is just so much more refined than the MP. Mind you it is 24 years younger!
Rob fitted a truss rod to my old red Series 2000 (fppr!) which now belongs to Moo (the guy who owned it prior to Moo's purchase had it done)! Quite a big job I think - best to contact Mr G once he's back off holiday!
19. That really is in good condition - very Pino! Do not sell it - thats a keeper.
20. pm on its way!
21. Lotsa luvlies there! BassBus - that certainly looks like Mike's old 2000 (the red tint gives it away!). Sadly I'm down to one Status bass (sniff!) which is my very old 2000, serial number 27. Fantastic basses!
22. Welcome! Thats one of my alltime fave movie quotes, `luke warm water' - classic! ..do a good show yeh?! Nick
23. Autoglym do a tar remover - works nicely on stickers/sticky gunk!
24. Wilkes guitars were fairly popular during the 80's, hailing from Stoke-on-trent - I've still got one (did have two at one point), a half-fretted/fretless bass which has the unusual headstock tuner arrangement. The range consisted of a number of models as I recall, one being a StingRay copy. They are very well made basses. CD David has a very nice fretless model, don't you Dave! Certain fretless models in the range (inc. Dave's bass) had a very clever system which gave the popular `slap' and pull style of playing a nice edge. Basically, the end of the fretboard had two flush mounted brass plates which transmitted vibration into a transducer pickup which could be blended into the `normal' p/up sound. Will see if I can dig out some pics!
25. One of my `adages' (sp?) is that if you find yourself growing out of love for a bass, give it a really good clean and a new set of strings, if you still don't feel anything after that, then its time to say goodbye (sad eh?!). Glad the story has a happy ending! Nick
