  1. Or even... if the aim was extra stiffness (which was the reason given) the most common way of doing that is to use laminates in the neck (which is another join or eight) - if you really go to town you turn the wood laminates (like Warwick do) so the grain isn’t going the same way. oddly to use Warwick as an example - when they were made in smaller numbers they didn’t have a volute (or whatever we call it) - when they produced more out of less aged wood they introduced it.
  2. You can weigh it and work out its weight per cubed meter and then compare ... once you know that you can start to come up with rough figures of weight per thickness too.
  3. it's more a question - how much heavier that the equivalent alder or ash is it.
  4. look at what Bass Collection are doing. Their fender style copies are thinner. I imagine they've done the hard work at working out how thin they can make it. Also is it that heavy? And compared to what. Anything in a big slab will feel heavier than when it's trimmed down to size and given nice smooth edges.
  5. at least you tried
  6. Heel? That’s at the other end of the neck...
  7. I think it’s called a volute
  8. Surely the one thing the effects can’t do is amp and cab sims. With the sansamp effect and a IR you must be half the way there surely? but don’t you run the effects into a amp and cab? will be less useful, though I’ve got some random Neve EQ IRS which might be more useful depending on what you are trying to achieve
  9. jon wilis has a “cab sim” he’s worked out for the helix with a three band eq and a HPF/LPF. that he prefers As an alternative to IR. Having looked at your pedals for sale... and running into the PA then I would have thought a preamp, compressor and the Broughton filters would be all you needed. I’m not sure how much percentage better a cab sim would make it. having had the Zoom and the Stomp, the zoom is passable and has cab sims in it. Though going from the gear you have now to a zoom I think would be a fair step down. For me in your situation I would either keep my pedals of sell them all to get a stomp.
  10. Surely the point of IR is you can download a cab (or even amp and cab) IR and make the output of your HX effects sound like any cab you want? Or am I missing the point somewhere along the line?
  11. Would that solve it?
  12. I’ve a dinged 5 I’ll swap for one of your dinged 4 next time we’re visiting friends in your part of the woods!!
  13. So been using it live recently. Actually don’t find using the B string too hard! If anything it’s getting lots on the D and G strings that’s the problem! though did pick up my 4 string L1000 yesterday and that was a fun time.... so using it live but Not 100% sold on this 5 string thing yet!
  14. Not sure if I’ll make it this year
  15. They are very nice dinked four strings (the ones I’ve seen)
  16. The reverse I think - @Phil Starrs idea of a PA amp would probably get more performance even at a lower price
  17. never used- but if it's just a power amp the Bassic A900 for £475 http://w.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Bassics.html My 2p - I'ld get a bass amp head that lets me bypass the preamp with the effects loop. That way if your VT preamp fails, or you just want another sound some point, you've got it.
  18. That said if I could only afford the B3n it would be super capable in most cases.
  19. Hx stomp is so much better. zoom quicker to set up (as focused on bass), simpler and more bass specific models. Esp solid state bass amps.
  20. This weeks findings on the HX stomp 1) dual cabs... you can choose which two cabs by changing the second cab! some odd sounds available there. Not sure when or why I would use that but it's cool. 2) You can assign the foot switches to turn on/off different blocks, simple.... just touch them to set it up. We all knew that - What I found is I can asign the switch to do one or more things in an block, so for instance the switch boosts the drive or treble of an amp, I figure you could set it to do a few things with one push too but not got that far in!
  21. I'm playing at the weekend and kinda want to play the jazz cos I love that bass. I also want to play the Lakland just because if I don't keep playing it I will just give in.
  22. what freq do you have the preamp mids set at?
  23. I couldn’t understand why no one else went for it. It was pretty battered and needed some TLC but still
  24. But the OP will have IEM so itwillbe different
  25. Thought I would share my latest new bass day, it’s a bit late as I actually picked this up in late November ... but it’s taken me a while to get used to it... my first ever five string a Lakland 55-94 classic from 1999 I think in candy apple red you know when Facebook shows you adverts for basses and you see one that’s at a great price which get snapped up straight away... well then imagine it’s still there three weeks later, and in the next village from where you work... so you explain you probably aren’t interested but can you try it please... and it’s pretty well played and beat up, but it’s as light as a four string, and the neck is just a natural feel and effortless, even with that extra string ... ... and later that week the fella comes over and money is exchanged ... new strings and knobs come from Lakland in the US (hence newer style knobs) and I practice with it and gig it once so far. Mentally harder to play 5 compared to 4 ... but fun oh it can kinda sound like a jazz, or it can kinda sound like a musicman, or it’s own sound with both. The preamp is very very coloured, I need to test out the different mid options and the whole thing is kinda on the darker end of the spectrum... sounds a bit rubbish actually, till you hear it in the mix and it just *fits* perfectly so learning curvd having a fiver, but lots of fun!
