1.
Any consensus on the hit rate for good examples of these inexpensive J&D and Harley Benton basses? I'm sending back a new Vintage V4 P bass because it was genuinely horrible, the sound didn't inspire me and the number of cosmetic flaws sufficient to make me never want to bother with the thing (shoddy finish in several places including the neck pocket, skewiff scratchplate screws, warped scratchplate, strings not evenly spaced across the neck, nut slots too high and the worst BBOT bridge I've ever encountered). I'm tempted by the Harley Benton PJ-4 HTR Bass but fear getting another lemon so maybe I should go for another Squier (like the VM PJ).
I know that at least three of us on BC have bought HB basses recently and all of us have been happy with them so I say go for it, they have a 30 day return policy at Thomann as well so you can't really miss out, I was debating whether to buy the bass you mentioned but ended up getting the slightly dearer HB Jazz bass http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_hbb1975_na.htm, the bass looks great and is well finished, the only slight negative on mine was some of the fret edges were a little bit sharp but not enough to need filing IMHO. Hope this helps a bit John
 2. Amazing player, that looks like it was a lot of fun John
 3.
I've just placed the order for 20 off aluminium ones and 14 are already spoken for. I should have them around the end of next week. I had to place the orders for the other stuff in the batch to get the price down on these hence the urgency. Cheers, Rich
Great work Rich John
 4.
Apologies to everyone who has shown interest in the combo. I'm not being rude in not replying but unfortunately a huge tree fell on my car last week and pretty-much destroyed it. Unfortunately both my Promethean and a Berg cab and Status bass were in the boot at the time and I can't actually access the car yet to see whether everything is intact, which is very doubtful given the external damage I will keep everyone posted though
Bloody hell, glad you weren't in it at the time and I hope your gear is OK, will your car insurance cover damage to stuff in the car as well? All the best John

 14.
What's your opinion about quality construction? Is it worth modding it? How much is the string spacing measured from the bridge?
Spacing between the strings is 18mm. John

 17.
What's your opinion about quality construction? Is it worth modding it? How much is the string spacing measured from the bridge?
I think the build quality is great, everything is spot on and the pick-ups sound terrific When I get a chance I'll measure the string spacing. John
