1.
In our old punk covers band the guitarist wore ear plugs. Then turned up much louder than the rest of the band as he couldn`t hear himself anymore. So he ended up hearing himself at exactly the same volume as before the ear plugs were inserted, but now everyone else was deafened by him. The thought of inserting his 412 into another of his orifices else occurred to the rest of the us.......................
IME this is actually usually a case of not having a well defined sound, so it gets lost in the mix hence the turning up
 2.
Sounds like the world's most disapointing super-hero To the OP, a little overdrive can, counter-intuitively, add some clarity to your tone and help you cut through. This might be what the guy meant, but doesn't sound like he approached the subject with you very well. End of the day, are you happy with your sound, and does it work in the context of your band? If so, ignore all others
Toilet Man - Always Leaves you in the S&%t? Toilet Man - Will leave you feeling flushed?
 3. I've been playing bass for 6-7 years and have played a couple of shows (Last Five years, Hairspray, The wedding singer) , all of them by the skin of my teeth pretty much (well, thats how it felt to me, I got compliments on the playing still) I generally find that when i'm asked to do a run of shows, I spent a lot of time with the score and my reading ability feels better, although I know i'm not perfect, I know i'm playing something that loosely correlates between the written score and the feel of the music. Anyway, the last month or so I've been dedicating 3 x 30 minute slots a week to practising reading The last week i've been away for xmas and without instruments of any sort, come back to it tonight , tried to start and just falling to pieces. It seems to be that I have nights (not just the first time) where this happens. In particular I find I am reading barely one note ahead and cannot count properly ( eg a dotted crotched followed by a quaver getting me completely and utterly out) , whereas on other nights I find i'm reading 2 bars ahead. Is this normal? Will this get better over time ?
 4. The majors stuff is good but i suggest you start , for absolute begginer with the sessions 20 ish (i tihnk its 20-25?) SAve the files all to disk, rename the music files to .mp3 and the others to .pdf
 5.
I haven't found that attitude to work in practice, unless you're calling the shots and hiring the sound guy yourselves. Any time you set up that adversarial relationship with the house sound guy, it's never a good gig!
+1 Work with the sound guy to get the best out of the venue. dont patronise or abuse. In most cases they are working for time constraints on top of other things - not just laziness unless you have actually got someone who couldn't give a flying donkey.
 6.
Round the bend, more like.

Round the bend, more like.
a 40mm u-bend? a good part number for that would be UB40?
 7. The thread was for albums I thought? Stars by Simply red starts with something got me started and that lovely dim chord.
 8. Like many I used to use lots of effects, when in an 80s band. The main time I use effects now a days is for theatre work - quite often is an instruction for a particular effect - eg an envelope, or a "very high frequency chorus" or sim.
 9.
Yeah, but as I'd like someone steady and not committed to other bands etc to save gig clashes etc. I know - I'm an idealist who is willing to compromise (my wife always calls me an oxymoron, or something like that)
There is something to be said for that - we have not the most technical drummer but he is always available, always rehearses, always knows the songs etc, and that is good for business
 10. We're at a social club in Ipswich - long way to go Good payer though, and suits our music so should go down a storm. Have had to turn down 3 other gigs for NYE already.
 11.
Maybe i've just been unlucky with them then. Realistically though, it is good to have some competition to Millers again, after DV shut down. Apart from the likes of Thomann etc!
Went in again a couple of days ago. All the staff hanging around the counter, chatting, and then they went off to play instruments together. Got a hello on way in but no offers of help or anything Went back in with our female singer later in day and instantly get help
 12. Band I play in occasionally, have a fantastic set of professional musicians. Check out http://www.bluelionband.co.uk/ If you decide to contact them, let me know !
 13. Bought rich' double bass Rich top fella, quick to communicate and even drove it over here for petrol money. Top bloke.
 14.
On a side note, working in the software industry for more than 25 years, I have learned that anything that is possible in a user interface, the user will do, even if not intended:) a.
Usually someone like me! I've voted, I had a top 2 and then 3 more that I was torn between.
 15. Bassists are ever the practical lot, no one seems to really care about the actual bass stuff here, just getting back to civilisation!
 16.
Can't say that's been my experience. I've bought quite a frw bits n bobs from there, and they've always been very friendly and helpful. Most recently I was after a Zoom G1on. The guy told me the price and, with no prompting from me, went away and looked up the cheapest online price and sold me it at that price. No complaints here.

I can't say i've found that at all. i've never had a negative experience there. I generally find the staff enthusiastic and helpful. i had an amp from them that had a faulty socket and it was sorted rapidly. I also had them ringing around locating me a fender sandblasted which in the end came from europe.
Maybe i've just been unlucky with them then. Realistically though, it is good to have some competition to Millers again, after DV shut down. Apart from the likes of Thomann etc!
 17.
Gangnam Style has nearly 2.5 billion views. Apparently YouTube had to change their 'views' counter to accommodate this. Who knew?
You are right - they only had a 32 bit number ( 2,147,483,647 ) for it http://www.koreaboo.com/featured/psy-breaks-youtube-view-counter-gangnam-style/
 18.
A few things to take into account. The charts you have been sent, could possibly need pencil markings when you turn up to rehearsals, things can change: Cuts, amendments, notes need changing, repeats added or taken away, dynamic markings etc. Plus if something goes wrong up on stage, the MD might need you to jump to a new section/bar number, or indeed go back. Depending on what show or panto, the issue of the iPad glowing in really dark scenes. It's not unheard of for directors, producers or lighting teams to place Blue gel over music stand lights. If you get lost on a paper score, there are visual landmarks and cues that can get you back on track, with iPads you are stuffed really. What about any charts with DC or DS al Coda? Charts with repeat bars going BACK to the page before? - It all needs checking out in depth before hand. I have used an iPad on gigs for chord charts if needed, and that works fine, but in a Pit, I would feel uneasy about things going wrong. Good luck with the show.
Pencil markings are no problem with most of the good softwares out there (I use mobilesheets for most of the function work, which supports tab and chords, and changing of them on the fly,but not tried for dots.) You should be able to save them between shows Good points on the codas/repeats/etc +1 for a pedal I would just print out the score and create some sellotaped parts for those that are needing awkward page turns
 19. See, PMT in Cambridge are generally lacking in the customer services dept, so interesting to hear. I heard through ex staff the owner of PMT is a bit of a scumbag and treats the staff badly but how much of that is bitter ex staff, I dont know. Glad you are all sorted!
 20. We base our rehearsals on cheapest based on time/distance for members, but in terms of recording It really is a case of who I know and reocmmendations. The place we will probably use in our next session will be the place i've always gone because of a stupidly good engineer, and friends with the two owners since before they set it up.... doesn't really help you though.
 21.
About 2 quid will buy you a European to uk mains adaptor. I'd get one of those until they can sort you the proper one out.
see pic - its a 9v centre positive, not a kettle lead- thats the problem , not the other end?
 22. I contacted JAY BASS as he had a "wanted" advert for the specific bass that my brother was trying to sell (I was about to get him to sign up here and post, but no need! (I've donated to the forum as well to make up for it!))and got them talking. My brother asked me to post the following feedback: Came round next day, very polite, worthy of feedback So here is your first feedback Jay Bass
 23. It depends on the venue though too - I've done nights where I've played everything from funk to blues to rock to reggae to dnb.... Its a great way to get better at listening!
 24.
If it wasn't so far away, I'd be there in a shot.
same
 25. Intro is very different, but easy enough to learn.... and there are good tabs - eg http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/g/guns_n_roses/sweet_child_o_mine_btab.htm The whole of the song depends how good your drummer is IMHO If you have a drummer who can learn all the stabs etc at the end of the verses etc, and you can as well, it sounds so tight. - eg End of Verse 1 - you have the 4 note run up to the octave, then at the end of the pre-verse/solo1/thing (to verse 2) you have the octave then the 4th/maj3rd riff - and that HAS to be in time with the drums. Its very intricate in the detail and timing - even the second chorus transition to the second repeat - you have to got to hit the timing on that. 3rd solo (after the extra bar) you've got to be hitting the octaves with the drums. So in short - its great IF you and the drummer both take the time to learn it properly.
