1.
Paul Gray; when I was a kid I had no interest no music at all, let alone playing an instrument. It wasn't until a school mate lent me the self-titled Slipknot album that I fell in love with the low end. I credit me playing bass to Paul Gray entirely and was devastated when he died. Jeordie White/Twiggy; Around the same time as I heard Slipknot for the first time, I also heard Marilyn Manson. Still to this day, my style of playing and my early use of root/octave and sliding techniques are plucked from Twiggy, as well as my love for Thunderbirds.
There's something about Twiggy I've always loved as well. I feel like he knows exactly what to play and when, especially on Thirteenth Step by A Perfect Circle. Really under-rated musician in my opinion.
2. Basically exactly what Truckstop said. Martinie has been my main inspiration when it comes to playing ever since I started and after a few months of not listening to them, I went back and realized just how much of an inspiration he's been on me. Superb bassist.
3. Arif Mirabdolbaghi (Protest the Hero) Les Claypool (Primus + various other bands) Ryan Martinie (Mudvayne) Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle) Justin Chancellor (Tool)
4. When actually thinking about it, I've only saw two of my 'bass heroes' Les Claypool (both dates at Royal Albert Hall this year and Manchester Last year) Arif Mirabdolbaghi. Yes. I googled his second name.
5. Although not quite to the same level of issues as you've endured. November 2010 My lung collapsed (twice) and I spent the full month in hospital unable to move for the most part. It made me appreciate my family a lot more and I'll be honest, ever since then I've been more willing to try new things and generally been a happier person.
6. another bump. Half price is good! surely
7.
i'd rather not do the freebie, i can't justify loosing the cash and the fact that everyone is getting paid pisses me off
Yeah, same here. I've never played a free gig (I'm finding it impossible to find a group of reliable people to even get a band together) but I probably would. Even if it was just for promo or experience...or free drinks.
8.
how can you afford to play for free? playing for free means it costs you....
I can't, but I would at least enjoy playing rather than sulking in the house alone wishing I was playing a gig.
9. I'd rather play for free than not play. I took up music because I enjoy it not to make money. I would much rather play for money obviously.
10. I used to have Ultimate Ears Triple Fi.10's (until I sat on them by accident). They were great, but I only really used them for listening to music and playing in the house. But they were definetly worth the money I paid and theyve went down a fair bit in price since I bought them.
11. I do enjoy a bit of Enya...
12. Other than just songs I've fancied covering I'd have to say this http://m.soundcloud.com/wullieliddell/demosong1-rough It's just really unusual patterns for me and tuning. No bass track yet though, still in the process of learning it
13.
IMO the B string is something to be used sparingly - use it too much and you just end up with a muddy mess.
+1000
14. I like this thread. It also just dawned on me that I've been playing for exactly two years now (give or take a day or two). I love it more than I did when I started now.
15. I will admit, I personally don't like using the low string all the time, I try to use it sparingly but not really possible in some sub-genres or with certain guitarists
16. I think a lot of it is just that they use it sparingly. I know Mudvaynes bassist barely ever uses it unless it sounds right (like on Under my Skin) but he does tune GCGCF or F#BF#BE, which is already ridiculous! I do think it's just a case of, use when Nessescary. Protest the Hero's bassist is probably the best example I can think of. He uses the low string quite a lot but still knows when it wouldn't sound like rubbish. Also, forgot to mention dynamics. Playing a C on the Low B string creates a completely different feel than playing it on the A string, adds impact I feel.
17.
I was going to say ... remember books?
Is that a type of yoghurt or something?
18. Double post here but this is my favourite Obscura song regarding bass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snDfSqcPHWk
19. I saw the title of this and rushed to post an Obscura song. Damn you! As far as I'm aware this song was played on a Pedulla fretless http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ac0mMK3SiE
20. I haven't but I believe I will start. I want to start getting into reading music.
21.
If you've got a penchant for two or three minute songs with more key and timing changes than you feel is conceivably possible during a two or three minute song, fire up your Spotify and listen to their Get Your Goat album.
Even more than old Dillinger Escape Plan? I love them but so many of their songs just seem like noise sadly.
22.
Mr Bungle..... everything and anything....
I covered 'squeeze me macaroni' as a college audition and I got in no bother! Great band. There's just something about Mike Patton that I love.
23. Came across this band last week Diablo Swing Orchestra, they mix Swing and Metal music and do a very very good job I must say! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2mZVOd0jWY What's some other unique bands you know?
