Silly question, but during these extended periods of non-playing, do you turn the volume down on your bass/mute the signal with a tuner pedal?

Do you use a single coil pickup? That can be noisy, especially if you are near an amp. Split/humbucking types will solve this. I believe you can also get hum-free singles as well

Same genus (Acer) but different species. From my experience, maple is easier to work with being a bit less brittle and more consistent. The one time I worked with seasoned sycamore, it was quite knotty and a bit more difficult to get clean cuts.

The Big Al is such a Glam looking bass. You know you want one...
