1.
More companies jumping on the 'brexit' philosophy and raising prices. There is no justification for raising the price of items that are already in stock . I hate big business!
Not quite right. Some don't actually pay the maker / distributors until the item is sold., and the contracts state it will the price at the sale time, not when the stock was received. Up until sale the item still being owned my makers or distributors and not the shop. I don't know if that is the case with Mesa & Westside, but it is more common than you think. If the shop goes bust it stops the gear going in the cheap fire sale.
2. Westside are well known for controlling prices. And they won't warranty repair non EU (soon to be non U.K.) bought items, they are non even keen on U.K. Items outside of the warranty period. And Mesa won't release schematics to help local techs do non-warranty repairs.
3.
Thought I would share a bit more of my thinking and experimenting. Couldn't really understand why the neck profile on the '64 was so appealing. I play guitar too, and I can adapt to most shapes - some I prefer, some not, but not to this degree. So I did a very crude 'solder wire' based profile exercise. (Sad, I know..) Here we go: The '64 is clearly a flatter, slimmer, wider profile - but for me the biggest difference is less 'shoulder' I think combined with vintage frets and the 7.5" radius board, I have my answer. Maple or RW doesn't matter, I don't think. It's the neck profile, and to some extent the nut width (but not exclusively) Well there you go.
That's very interesting. I'll have to do that! It's a shoulder thing for me too, less is good.
4. I like maple necks and boards that only have an oil finish. Eventually they go really dark no matter what. Not a lot I can do about it, even with a wipe down. I'm not going to use anything more abrasive on an oil finish.
5.
Different strokes for different folks I guess, aren't the scientists looking to cure cancer ambitious? Or the service men & women who learn to walk again after losing limbs? Ambition is there to serve you surely & the climbers who are still on Hillary's step? are they victims of ambition or the task?
I was taking the piss.
6.
I agree, I suspect the wood / shape will not affect sound. Sustain maybe. Someone would need to swap all the innards / strings / necks etc over to do a test like that to prove it. I suspect someone in Japan is working on that right now ;-)
There is a YT vid where a guy does a neck comparison, and actually swaps the neck only to see maple v rosewood. Everything else remains the same.
7. Thank you. It's a good weight, but alas my back demands something lighter. I'll keep looking.
8. Lovely. I saw that on the BD site. Was quite tempted myself.
9. Ambition is over-rated. Every frozen corpse on Everest was an extremely ambitious person.
10. Try this approach http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0AWgq-PywY&feature=youtu.be
11. This thread confirms I need several P basses.
12. Right at the beginning it says they had the same strings. On his jazz comparison he also says the "same string set"
13.
Well, they nearly all sound like precisions but the tones vary wildly. I tried loads in the last few months & the difference between all the basses I played was incredible considering they were all 4 string P's with the one split pickup! If it was a rock gig & they were all sharing a tubey stack that might have made them sound more similar especially as most rock bands try to find very similar bass tones as we all know what just works. Here's an example - you'll hear that the 70's one absolutely slays the others.
That's a great vid. So then - the extra bite from the Ash Body & Maple one. Is that from the Ash or the Maple or both? I really like the grind that one has.
14. I'm going to bet that covers bands with Non-trite set lists get fewer booking that Ines with trite ones. Nature of the beast.
15.
There you go, just put a 5 string Stingray neck on it. There's a chap on eBay who specialises in modifications for people with big hands that could soon convert it to a 4 string for you.
That bloke's a nutter!
16. Just strip the lacquer off the neck. It will be dark and filthy in no time then!
17. The WD is a fantastic pedal. It is a bit big, but the controls allow it to be set up really well for bass use.
18. The Harris model weighs as much as an anchor too. Harris was my first real bass hero when I started playing in the 1980s and I'd love his sig model - but with some of them hitting 12lb. No chance.
19. I've still never played a wide neck one. I find the concept a bit weird - my 5 string stingray is the same width as a wide P! I'd be worried my fingers would fall through the gaps!! I do like the look of the 50s Roadworns though. My local shop never seem to have any in stock to try though.
20. Get a used Pino signature model for a fraction of your proper old one!
21. Lovely. I keep listening to the Mr Exane demo. Sounds great. But then again he makes everything sound good.
22. I've got one. Bad things - the wah without the fuzz is sh*t on bass. Admittedly it was never designed as a bass pedal, but even so, it's pointless for just wah. Good things - with the fuzz on the wah is excellent. Real grindy abrasive wah, like the man himself. The fuzz on it's own falls into the "not bad at all" camp rather than the "brilliant" camp. I'm pleased I've got it, but there's no doubt you'd have more options with a Weeping Demon and a Duality Fuzz used together. Or separate.
