1. whilst checking to see when a documentary on minimalist music is on on saturday i noticed that radio 3's 'jazz library' programme (12 midnight, saturday night) is on mr pastorius. "Jaco Pastorius was a master of the fretless electric bass, and became a key figure in jazz-rock fusion. To identify the essential Pastorius albums, Alyn Shipton is joined by pianist Gwilym Simcock, to cover music ranging from discs by Weather Report and Joni Mitchell to several of the records the bassist made under his own name." just thought i'd pass it on
2.
Given you're in London you can also come over and test her out if it helps the decision ;-).
pm'd
3.
I'm sorry?
you just made my t-bird GAS very bad !
4. i like the reverso !
5. whilst playing with the techno/spacerock band a bloke danced his way up to me, looking very enthusiastic and wide-eyed (i.e. on drukqs) and asked me "what note are you playing ?" now - at this point in the song i'm playing a simple rhythm on bottom G, with a big filter going on and some phasing. "G" i shout back at the fella with a smile he bellows "i f**kin' love G !" and danced back into the audience
6. on the 'i used to be in a band' talk - taxi drivers have always been the worst for that. if you get in a taxi with a guitar it seems to be open season for the driver to regale you with tales of who he's had in the back, and how they love blues. ok, i suppose, but i don't normally get into taxis for a chat.
7. if i didn't have a fretless... i'd be all over this.
8. good work indeed ! maybe you should cut a few more and flog 'em to basschatters !
9.
If you've got the wood and a spare desk why not build some speakers into the desk? Maybe work out a way of porting it around the sides or something. That's something I'd LOVE to see. Guitar open backed in the middle then ported bass either side. Awesome.
build them into a desk ? interesting...
10.
Phil Jones Bass Briefcase is 2x5" but I think the depth and structure of the cabinet is going to make a difference whatever the speaker size.
i'd imagine that the cabinet would be very important when you get down to this size. i used to use a pair of bookshelf hi-fi speakers my dad made as a bass cab - it sounded ok at low vols irrc. i've still got the speakers somewhere...they were only a few inches across
11. it'd be great to get one of those and a couple of the tiny fender and marshall-style ones you can get for a tiny backline at a gig. edit: i've been thinking about this for the last 10 mins and i wonder how small you could make a viable bass cabinet ? a 1x4 ? i know genz benz make a 1x8... see - i've got all this spare plywood round the house
12. i'm veru dubious about what they'll sound like, but it's so cute !
13. not a gig-related one, but this happened very recently. "ow wow...so you play bass...can't you slap ?" /mimes slapping thumb/ "not really" "aaaaah, you can't play bass unless you slap"
14. there are more costly hobbies.
15.
Are you certain it's the same one
yeah, i cut the brass nut myself.
16. now here's a thing... i was looking for a picture of my first bass (a hohner arbor mx bass) and i've actually found a pic of my bass - i sold it to a very good friend of mine years ago. what's even better is that i've been treying to track him down for years, and it seems i've found him
17. distortion !
18.
If it's good music it's good music. I don't care what it's played on.
plus the one.
19.
Fair play to him tbh, He's been dead honest and is trying to sell his bass. Each to their own.
plus the one. let's all point and laugh eh ?
20.
Maybe they just like them.
plus the one again.
21.
I would disagree with that. Because you may love the sound but if something like the Neck profile, Body shape or weight isn't comfortable then it's going to an uncomfortable gig and most likely feel like a crap one no matter how good the sound.
fair point. a nice-sounding bass that's so heavy that you can't play it for long would be a non-starter, or as you said, one that was uncomfortable to play. i stand corrected.
22.
...I'm quite the pedant that way.
and rightly so...there's no way that bass could be described as mint unless it tastes like a polo.
