I know plenty of you hate it, but I love the Precision design for its simplicity. The one thing that does irk me about it, however, is the control cavity. I've just had to remove 13 screws (well, 12 since I lost one) in order to pop off the scratch plate and find out why my tone pot's crackling. Leo and co managed to solve this problem on the Jazz (and even the Telecaster before that) by having a separate control plate - so why didn't they think to update the Precision's design for ease of access? Alternatively, tell me what grinds your gears about your favoured axes.

Having to take the neck off to adjust the truss rod is pretty annoying. That was a 70s P, thankfully it never really needed adjusting.
Both of those baffle me about Precisions and other Fenders. Particularly the truss rod bit, how difficult is it to route an additional notch at the heel and in the pickguard so you can fit a truss key in? Any bass that cannot accommodate a right-angled jack in their output is frustrating, no particular offender there. Oversized headstock on a Gibson Thunderbird causing it to be neck heavy. Dingwall Combustion string tree not having gaps to take the strings off, meaning awkward threading or removing the tree to change strings. On a similar note, any bass with a bridge that is not top loading and you have to thread through (Fender mainly again, but many others) Loads of aspects of Rickenbacker basses, but most are part of the look of the bass. However, the bridge needs a complete redesign and could still look the part. Wal 4 string - again perhaps part of the iconic look, but the pickup surrounds are awful for thumb anchoring, a problem they sorted with the 5 string versions but never updated the 4. Im sure ill think of more!
Well I was about to do exactly that, plus put my B3K up for sale here. Much to the Darkglass fans' disgust I'm sure...
Just make sure you do a comparison before selling the B3K! I don't think anyone will judge a player for owning either pedal, at the end of the day the best tool for the job is what is required

Yup, Parcelforce.

Oo, look forward to hearing your thoughts!
I find this whole situation quite interesting and well worth discussing. Maybe you should skip this thread if you don't like it.

I would have thought the opposite, the Vulcan sounds less aggressive than the B7K and more comparable to the Vintage from the demos I've heard. Interested to try one out but Darkglass have a new range of stuff being unveiled in January including an updated Vintage Deluxe with the 4 band EQ and toggles from the B7K as well as an amp!
Oh sh*t, is that what the Microtubes plus is? That has two foot switches so I imagine not, so this must be the updates one he mentioned. That may just make the deluxe usable for me! I should speak to Doug more haha!

I would fully recommend that you have a conversation with Alpher Instruments, incredible craftsmanship and up there with the best of British builders

*SOLD* Sei fanned-fret 4-string (BEAD) bass
It's the same as on Dingwall basses. The point of different lengths for each string, and particularly a longer B string, is to have each string at a more similar tension, and the B string gives a deeper fundamental when it's longer. It's a bit of a stretch, depending on the length of your fingers, though for me having a narrower neck because it's a 4-string helps a lot. Bear in mind that a double bass is still a longer scale length than that.
The Dingwall only goes to 37", so this is why I asked. I understand fanned frets! inwas just curious about the subtle but presumably meaningful change in range compared to the Dingers. -
No love for Sue Ryder then?
She has married, it's now Sue Maruszczyk. Great do.

Number 1 I would have gone for two but the location of the crack is quite unfortunate, i like how it is symmetrical on 1.

... Although I would say there are balance benefits in some designs
-
It's just another design variation. I dare say if Leo decided to stick with a single cut design rather than double cut and inspired all the builders today, double cuts would look weird to some people I chose an Alpher Mako (SC) shape over a Cobia (DC) because I prefer the look. I personally do not think there are any real tonal or stability benefits.
So can we close this thread now?
No I don't think legality is being questioned. As the OP, certainly not a question raised by me. Looking forward to an owner, particularly one experienced with Darkglass, giving their comments.
The word inferior has been used a few times to differentiate this from the Squier JV. Important thing to establish is how does the construction of this particular model bass differ from the Squier to make it superior?
Any response from the OP? Genuine interest here, but I would just like the big step up explained to me, as I figured these came from the same production line as a Squier Jv, just badged differently. Does this have higher quality woods? Pickups? Different profile?
I couldn't give a monkey's about the politics and would choose whatever pedal sounded best, I think most bassists not deeply involved in Basschat / Talkbass wouldn't even know or care either.
It's interesting you say that, as I imagine smaller builders like 3 leaf very much rely on internet fame to sell their devices, in particular forums. I doubt anyone would have even heard of builders like iron ether and fuzzrocious without that kind of exposure. For boss, digitech, Ibanez etc completely agree with you, but not for boutique builders.
Design and tooling costs. In that big post Spencer made it pretty clear that the fundamental circuit design is the same as the darkglass, I don't think he's trying to deny that, so doing a new PCB layout would be a massive waste of time and money. He says he designed the PCB, I believe him, as long as he didn't sell the rights to the layout to darkglass then he's perfectly entitled to use it himself.
Spencer did not design the PCB. I haven't even seen a claim to that, he just 'upgraded' a couple of components including the switch, schematics were otherwise 100% Darkglass/Doug, as of course was the layout of the pedal. He did create the enclosures (I can't say design, as fundamentally the old Finnish and USA had the same overall look) so don't think there is an issue there (apart from the interesting discrepancy in pre-drilled, when the Vulcan has a different PS location), however bizarre it appears from a business point of view. He has said the Vulcan is inspired by his knowledge of the Darkglass circuit, what he has not admitted to is that it appears to bean adjusted version of the exact same pcb, only with a Pike logo. I think what is so frustrating here is, if he had put these overdrive in his own cool rolled steel enclosures (changing PCB layout as appropriate) and they do sound very different to the DG units, then all these long accusatory conversations would never have taken place and I for one would be looking forward to trying one! However, to use the word again, the way he has done this is just bizarre.
I think we need to be careful not to make this a witch hunt just because we know and love Darkglass equipment and 3Leaf has created a similar - not the same - pedal. It is clear that the B7/3k was the basis for the new pedal, but quite frankly I find it odd that variations on Muffs, 808s etc are perfectly acceptable but this is not. The soiled business relationship will have 2 sides and my 20 yrs in business (incl JVs gone wrong) tell me there will have been conduct on both sides that led to the split. Doug Castro will be a savy business man, not a saint as will Spencer. Really the discussion should be if we like the pedals or not, nothing more or less. IMO.
Your right of course I'm only really irked that Spencer is maintaining that he hasn't done what it is clear he has, but as he is not active on this forum as he is on TB (although he has gone quiet now, which I don't really blame given the nature of the TB thread) so we won't get any comment. Steering the topic in the right direction, does anyone have one yet? Bass Direct now have them in stock.
