1. The strap that I use most is the one that came with a Westone Thunder that I bought 2nd hand in the early eighties. (and the Thunder is still going strong too...)
  2. +1 for the Arcam. Bought mine new in the early 80's, and it's still going strong. I recall comparing several at the time, and went for the Arcam in preference to the NAD 3020 (and the Mission Cyrus, which I thought made everything sound a bit like a disco...)
  3. ^this. If it sounds good, it is good. If it doesn't, change stuff until it does sound good...there's no right or wrong. An approach that might (or might not...!) work for you, is to start with everything flat, then turn things up one at a time until you discover what aspects of your sound you don't like. Hours of fun
  4.
You didn't get it first time round... I've spelt it out for you, and you still don't get it.
No, I got it first time around, and your repeating it isn't going to change that. I happen to disagree with you, which you appear to have an issue with.
Your name really suits you but I can't be bothered anymore..
Resorting to ad hominem personal attacks just makes you appear pompous and arrogant, so that's probably best.
  5.
That wasn't my point at all... My point was that people on here can call shows like X factor and the like as 'pap' and trivial and contrived and because of that they think that is a curse on music as a whole. Well, that is one point of view...which, IMO, has a degree of truth... But those same people will then say that they will play anything that the paying public wants when it comes to their own shows... so can be accused of...if you reallty wish to do that.. ..of pandering to the public and lowest common denominator in exactly the same way as the dreaded Cowell does. It just kind of struck me as ironic and funny...
You're right - staying in watching X Factor is almost exactly the same as going to a gig.
  6. FWIW - I don't usually do the shuffle thing, but mine churned out: Can I Get a witness - Nine Below Zero Corazon Espinado - Santana What A Waste - Ian Dury + Blockheads Sexy & 17 - Stray Cats Spanish Moon - Little Feat Edged In Blue - Rory Gallagher Fool For Your Stockings - ZZ Top She Does It Right - Dr Feelgood I Wish I Was A Single Girl Again - Eva Cassidy My Wife - The Who
  7.
Nope, can't stand 'em personally! Always use standard 45-105's. But it's whatever feels best for you.
+1. Don't mind the feel of light strings, but the tone always seems lacking to me,
  8.
... the public wants X factor if you believe the viewing figures...??
Not really. Some of the public wants X Factor...but only some of the time. At other times, The Public might want to just relax and read a book, or go for a nice meal with someone special...or maybe go and see a live band doing songs that remind them of their younger days, or just songs that they know and like to dance to. Shocking, I know...
  9. Pending arranging a suitable time for a meet, looks like this is traded.
  10.
..............??? Not sure you understood the point
I understood your point perfectly. Seems like you didn't get mine.
  11. Bought this from here 2 or 3 months back, but it's too big for my needs. It's an Ashdown Five Fifteen 100W combo with 15 inch speaker. Has a CD/line in and a headphone socket, so you can silently play along to CD's/MP3's etc. Also has an extension speaker socket. It's in excellent condition - I'd say 9/10, and everything works as it should with no crackles or rattles. Can't get photos at the moment, but I'll sort some out next week if anybody's interested. It's one of these...http://www.dawsons.c...bass-combo-100w Price-wise...I'd like to get back the 50 quid that I paid for it 3 months ago. It's in the same condition as the day I bought it, and I thought it was a bargain at the time. As far as trades go, some things I'm specifically after at the moment: A smaller bass combo - something with an 8 or 10 inch speaker. [s]Guitar combo - old Peavey perhaps...wadaya got?[/s] 2U rack case/bag. 10 inch guitar speaker/cab. Jazz bass hard case. Small pedal board. But try me with anything. Who knows what might tempt me - I'm willing to put some cash towards something that takes my fancy. I'm near Cambridge and I'd prefer collection, but I'm happy to travel around a bit and could meet anywhere around the Cambridge/Newmarket/Stansted Airport/Stevenage/Huntingdon/Bedford part of the world. Also happy to arrange delivery if a face-to-face isn't practical. Some photos:
  12.
My current covers band does none of those.

Haha nor does mine! and we still manage about 6 gigs on average a month.
Likewise. We don't do anything from the OP's list, but we do some stuff that's apparently for "coffin dodgers" and that's been otherwise slated elsewhere, yet we're turning down more gigs than we're able to do.
  13.
What strikes me is that you will get things like X factor and Cowell absolutely panned on here...and rightly so, IMO.. its basic cack with the chance to throw up a decent singer once in a while...but there you go..!!! but then you'll also get people here saying they will play anything that the publlic/punters wants.. well, the public wants X factor if you believe the viewing figures...?? Make up your minds.... I don't care so much where you stand but be consistant one way or another. That would be my take
The people staying in watching x factor aren't out at a live gig...
  14. Something's not right. I use my LH500 into a single Barefaced Compact. At full tilt, I'd be killing animals and small children.

    Hartke LH500

While the EQ etc is pretty simple, I found it takes a bit of getting used to. Some things you might want to bear in mind: With the volume up to 12 o'clock, I initially thought "hey, this thing's supposed to be loud!" but wind it round past that, and it's like the turbo's kicked in. If you feel like you've run out of mids, just back the bass & treble off and crank the volume. It seems to me that there's an interaction between the EQ controls that seems a bit odd when you first use it, if you've not come across this arrangement before. I think I've read somewhere that, electrically, the bass feeds into the mid, and the mid into the treble...or something. Whatever, the result is that the EQ knobs can have a very different effect on the tone (and overall volume), depending on how the other controls are set. At least, that's how it seems to me have fun...
I use one of these heads and love the simplicity of it. I recommend swapping the pre amp valve out for a JJ ECC803S
Another "me too" - love my LH500, and the "lack" of controls suits me just fine. Less temptation to dick around to the nth degree, instead of just getting on with playing and enjoying its lovely clean, warm punchy sound. I'm interested in the change of preamp valve though, more out of curiosity than any dissatisfaction with the stock item (Sovtek 12AX7 in mine - I'm guessing they're all the same ?) What does the change to a JJ ECC803S do for the sound ? Been reading the blurb on the Watford Valves website, where it says that valve "is very microphonic for use in guitar amplifiers" and that the ECC83-S is a better choice. ( http://www.watfordvalves.com/product_detail.asp?id=2429 ) Any thoughts ?
  17. Doesn't work for me. The first 30 are OK, then it hangs after the 1st part of the 1st pair of the 2nd 30
  18. Out of curiosity more than anything, I emailed Alan Entwistle about his JBX pickups, and asked how they compare with the ones fitted to the Classic J Tanglewater. He replied that his JBX is definitely hotter than the Overwater ones, which he produces to Overwater spec. For a tenner, I might just give one a go.
  19. Result ! I really like my HA2500 - definitely worth getting it fixed, and it sounds as though the fix shouldn't have been to costly
  20.
Hey guys. I have a Classic J that I bought second hand a while ago. [...] I love the sound of the P pickup, but as others have mentioned the J just sounds a tad too thin to me. There's a big volume drop when I use the J, a tad too much for my liking. Was thinking of perhaps putting a Wizard P/J set in it. Any thoughts?

Overwater basses normally have gain adj for each pick up i think. Dave
I'm sure that's correct for the active Tanglewaters, but the Classic J is passive and doesn't have any adjustment. I thought I had the same issue as bisonkills when I first got my Classic J, and went looking for the gain adjustment. If there is one, it's very well hidden! I agree that the J PUP is a bit weak compared to the P, but I managed to get them balanced to my liking just by raising the J and lowering the P
  21. If I've understood correctly, the truss rod has too much tension (against the pull of the strings) and would need to be loosened - not tightened. If it's been (unnecessarily) tightened to its max. that'd explain the bend, surely, or have I misunderstood?
