1. Thanks BOD2, I'm using unbalanced 1/4" leads (the SVP Pre outputs are unbalanced). I've spoken to the guys at Panic Music in Cambridgeshire (UK's only authorised Ampeg repair shop) and they seem to think that the problem is down to inductance between the two transformers as they currently sit on top of each other in a big rack unit. They recommended that I place the power amp 2 feet away from the pre and see what happens. I might look at some sort of shielding, now, where did I put those spare "Batfink" wings?
2. Hi Tony, already got one. Really useful little unit, but I need something that doesn't colour the sound too much.
3. Sorted now thanks, plumped for the EHX in the end, as it's tiny wee. The SFX stuff looks really good though, bit over my budget at the moment.
4. I bought one of these when they first came out and they cost less than that brand new. Best of British mate.
5. I've just fitted an East J-Retro to my Blade 5 string (I know, awesome!) and now want a headphone amp for private practice that delivers just the sound of my bass to a pair of headphones. I've got a couple of little ones at the moment, but they've all got 'amp simulators' on them. I'd just like to hear the output of the bass and/or pedalboard. Ideally a 9volter that can run on mains and batteries, and the smaller (and cheaper) the better. Any suggestions? Cheers, Paul
6.
Think of all the scratches on the back, lying on rough ground like that.
Least of his worries. That. Is. sh*t.
7. Yup, dead quiet. The problem is at the Pre end somewhere. It's all coming from the same ring in the building (4 way extension for both ams and the pedal board) so I reckon I should have a pretty quiet setup.
8. Cheers for that guys - I'm not touching anything yet. Upon further inspection I'm still getting some signal through even with the master volume on the Pre down fully, which to me says the fault might be with the pot (assuming it's working as a simple voltage divider). Hopefully thats it, as it's much easier to fix.
9. Just bought a Russian reissue Muff from Dave. Uber quick service and great comms throughout. Lovely guy to deal with, buy / trade with confidence.
10. don't have any crank arms, but can pay cash for your mammoth clone if it's still for sale. PM'ed
11. Hi All, I'm currently running a separate pre and power amp and am experiencing some earth noise. Is there anything to be gained from unwiring the earth on one of the mains plugs and using a suitable piece of insulated wire between the two earth points (little screws) on the backs of the amps? any advice would be appreciated.
12. All the best for this thunderbird, you're not doing "back in the saddle" by Aerosmith by any chance?
13. on a unrelated matter - nice fish-eye work there Derren; I really like the look (and sound) of that video. Back to business. Can't speak for the MM stuff that John East does, but if they're anywhere near as good as the Jazz ones then you won't be disappointed.

15. I had one of the Hohner ones and loved it. Mine was a 5 string, and yes, there wasn't quite enough oomph at the low end, but a very comfortable bass to play. It sounded awesome through my Trace stack at the time - that sounds really 80s doesn't it? I would imagine another limitation being detuning strings as they're double ball end, but I've never tried this, so wouldn't really know.
16. anybody know anything about these? http://www.audereaudio.com/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=5
17. RIP Cliff. His playing was the first time I actually heard what a bass guitar could do. Prior to that it was all 'dum - da - dum' I was about 13 or 14 and a friend lent me his tape of 'Master of puppets'. Good times, sad loss.
18. George L stuff is dead reliable and they are really skinny when on the board. I reckon I've freed up about 5 or 5 square inches on my board just by using their right angled stuff instead of Neutrik connectors and standard cabling. Not cheap, but cheaper (and less hassle) in the long run than completely rewiring the board every 6 months or so. also looking at the gear list on your sig, that B3K needs some quality cabling! 20. It's horses for courses really. Some band I've played in didn't need them (mainly covers bands), so I didn't take them. All of my 'original' bands - ever - have benefitted from a healthy dose of tasteful effects. Mainly octave, some sort of dirt, filter or synth pedal. I generally always take FX to a rehearsal, but don't feel that I absolutely must use them all of the time. That would make me some sort of guitarist, and I don't want that.
21. Loads of people have had this warning - something to do with eBay and hotmail, both of which were open at the time. I don't know about viruses and that - I'm in my ivory tower playing on a Mac....
22. It will get easier. The progresion that you've quoted is a I-VI-II-V (but slightly altered to make chord II major, instead of minor 2nd time round), and that's pretty much as 'standard' a progression as you're likely to see. It might seem a bit bewildering at first, but once you've nailed this you can play a whole lot of tunes.
23. Cheers for that, I've never even tried to exploit a blackhole (that I'm aware of), so I'll look into that.
24. Probably, they stink too. I mean REALLY STINK!
