1. Hiyah Bridges - I've fitted the Gotoh 203 fender-alike. Not strung it up since as it's in bass hospital under the knife (or router) for its active electrics .. But the bridge is a lot more substantial than the original SX one or the vintage Fender replacement mine came with. Others have fitted Gotoh 201's which are more chunky. Not sure about 5 string uptions. Pups .. Talk to Rich The SX pups seem fine (on the Jazz I had) my SX P was already customised in that department. Tuners seem Ok ... Starting out I'd change just the bridge and see how it feels from there. The strings are even Ok (probably the same as Roberts yellows) OG
  2.
No knobs. They use split shaft knobs for single pots and concentric pots are solid shaft (by design/necessity anyway?). Axesrus are good for random little things, and no postage. http://www.axesrus.com/axenob.htm
The Artec ebay guy will sell you knobs - but they are P bass chrome copies, no concentrics .. however they are just £1 each if you get them at the same time. +1 for AxesRUs for concentrics .. ..

    BASS BASH MARCH 2008
...speaking of North East, is there anyone out this way that wants a lift? I may be able to go if I can find someone to share fuel costs/stop me getting lost... I'm in Hull, but could go across to Manchester/Leeds I suppose - looks like Sheffield is on the way too. Is anyone bringing their other halves? Maybe we could setup a makeup/shoes/ perfume alternative for them
What do you mean "what bash"?

  11. +1 on the status light .... You don't want to be looking round to your amp to see if your mute is on or off... Build it so that the status lamp is off for most of the time (ie whatever you default setting is) and use a quick release battery holder such as these from Axesrus (they are ony £4.20 inc postage) You'll thank me when your battery goes between numbers and you don't have to find a screwdriver
  12.
Ive got an SX neckplate that I don't need - maybe the screws too if I can find them. £1 via Paypal to cover postage/envelope/PP Fees would be nice
PM sent Going to the Bash?
  13. Dave, May I suggest you put all the knobs on the top. The DHA compressor was hard to use with the i/p knob on the front. It's vunerable there too. Also if it has a battery, use a quick release battery holder such as found in basses. Also how about a rechargable, stock size, battery that recharges itself when the unit is plugged in but which can be replacable with a Duracell if needed.
  14. Keep it. You may grow into 5 strings as you get more experienced and then have to get another 5 stringer to scratch the itch .. You can restring it with a high C. It's a bit of work (new nut, bridge and truss rod tweaks, maybe new bridge pieces) but it is possible.

If you can make it next Tuesday early evening Rich will be here with his Shukelele .. That would be 3 to check out ... and Garbev lives in S Wales too .. he's just bought a pre-loved one ...
i also got a quote from dan lakin for the same spec and he quoted $4200! $800 to put blocks and binding in.
Ha ha ha That's a "I don't want to do it but I will if you pay me enough" quote... Welcome to the Shuker club (South Wales chapter). Jon's great, his work is great. You'll not be disappointed. If you don't like I'd like first refusal, please ... It will cost a bit more than the new US P bass but it will be so much better and most of the cost will be for hand built craftsmanship of the highest order rather than brand, shipping, tax and duty ... If you want to come and spend a few hours with my 5 string JJB just come over, or wait 'til the bash ...
  18. A short update I've not posted any pictures yet as the bass is in a state of flux It's currently in its underwear awaiting the routing for the installation of a battery box for the Artec SE2A preamp. This is the three pot version with volume plus stacked treble and bass controls. I have a chrome stack knob set that goes with the P bass chrome vol knob but I may splash out £3.50 for a black lower ring like the 1960 stacked Jazz controls ... I also gave in to The Call of True Way and bought an AXL tortie plate (an eBay bargain at £5) The very loud "death metal" pickup came out and my original real 1962 P pickup has gone in. Damn fine that sounds too despite its age. The Fender "5 screws with threaded saddles" bridge came off in favour of the Gotoh 203 which is more like a new Fender US series bridge - ie like a bent tin one but with a lot more meat. Should have it all together next week (after a soldering lesson from Rich)... I may also replace the nut with bone or brass one if Dave Dearnley isn't too busy when he does the battery box rout ...
  19.
I've come to the point where anything I buy has to make me money and so therefore has to have a specific job to do. But then I am picking up my second new Status bass in three months within a week or so! Hmmm... The theory is failing already!
After various musical friends and acquaintances started dying at ages not too far ahead of mine I decided to work on the theory that life's too damn' short to play an instrument that isn't the best you can get ....
  20.
That's a big help, Linus, thank you! ---- I have a BDI21, does anyone know if I can plug straight into a PA without a bass amp using this, if needed? Is that safe, would certain PA speakers have to be used to handle the frequencies?
You'd need it in the monitors or you'll not be able to hear yourself. I play with an acoutic band sometimes and they are all Ok as their instruments actually make a noise near their ears - fiddle, accordian, box guitar - but my non acoustic bass only comes out of the FOH speakers and there's no monitors... .. So it's a problem...
  21.
hahaha that's quite funny, then The back of the neck is glossy black - bit unusual TBH (there's another one )
ha ha .. You've had SX basses before then? I've taken a little 800 grit to mine to take that sticky yuk feeling away ... Works fiine on teh normal finish ..
  22. My mate Sarah will custom make anything you like in the T shirt department .. Band shirts, witty slogan one offs, Hoodies etc etc etc Have a look here: http://www.dizzydaisies.co.uk/ What I'm suggesting is that anyone (like the OP) considering setting up a business selling bass related, or basschat T's etc, should talk to her as she already has the tricky stuff sorted - payments, production and tracking etc. She will gladly work with you to design what you want and then you simply direct people to her system for the orders. I guess you work the money out between you. That's got to be better than ordering 100 black Hartke Hoodies and then finding all 30 of the people interested have bought two and you are left with 30 in XXS and 5XL for ever..... (times that by every brand you can think of) She's currently making me a custom Polo with my Shuker's on .. I think if you tried to use Fender's logo (or any of the other big boys) you'd get into trouble pretty quick.... The Rickenbacker Police probably have a crack squad of copyright infringement warriors poised in every town, just waiting for you to try
  23.
heya guys just to let you know... the gig went swimingly we were asked for an encore and thankfully had something prepared. it's been announced we are now the "school band" so any concerts any occasions we will be asked to play at them... not much but it'll get me used to band life and if i wanna take it further i'll have some experience at least.... cheers for the advice by the way i did it all, planned my speaking we rolled into each song with out twiddling or anything and the feeling of everyone singing red hot chilli peppers by the way back at me and the band was brilliant will let you know when the next one is.... P.s any ideas for new material would be brilliant we do a range of stuff from the chilli's to eric clapton... P.s.s will upload some pics when i get em...
I just love it when a plan comes together ... I just love it when someone asks for advice, accepts it, implements it and it all works out New tunes? Just go through this thread of guaranteed floor fillers http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...l=floor+fillers and play all the great tunes there. Remember the "only one slow tune per set" rule....
  24.
Virtually foolproof if you make a template first. It's all in the template. Get a piece of MDF most of the size of the body. The trick is to make sure that you've got template material over the neck pocket and the control cavity for easy clamping points that won't mar the finish in any way. Measure your battery box. Now comes the maths. Decide what router bit you're using. Needs to be deep (I used a 50mm deep cutter) and you're unlikely to get one thinner than 12mm at that length. Most routers come with a guide bush that screws into the router base. It's usually 30mm wide. Assuming you use these figures (12mm cutter, 30mm guide bush), then you'll need to make your template 9mm bigger all round (from the centre of the cutter, the bush is 15mm away and half the cutter's diameter is 6mm, so 15-6 = 9mm difference). Cut out your template. I use the router to do this too. Measure from the extremity of the cutter you're using to the flat edge of the base plate. Clamp a straight edge the required distance away from your template hole and use this to guide the router along the edge of the hole, one side at a time. Do a test first! Fit the guide bush to the router. Clamp the template to some scrap wood block and do a test rout. Let the guide bush ride along the edge of the template. Check that your battery box will fit. Also, don't strain the router or the bit by trying to be a hero and doing the hole all in one. I do it in 10mm steps using the depth gauge on the router. For a battery box like the one above, you have to go down about 33mm if memory serves, the side on boxes are shallower, but require a bigger template. Your other option is to make the template the exact size you need and use a router bit with a roller guide at the top of the cutter. The roller will follow the edge of the guide. As you plunge further down the roller will follow the hole itself. Practice makes perfect. I remember the first rout I did took hours, I was so nervous.
Hummmmmm Just spoke with local hero luthier Dave Dearnley and he'll rout and fit it for £20 No contest for a woodworking numpty like me I'd almost certainly mess it up... Thanks though... if I ever get more courage I may take a router to a bass and I'll keep this advice .. OG
