They really could do with bouncing these designs and ideas off of us here at bassplayer central. It's like the basses they released last year - they were Ok but, goodness, anyone here could have told them the f'ugly headstock was a sale stopper
  2.
Pissed bass players eh? I thought they must have meant leg end too. But WTF, any attention is an improvement on being ignored completely - or being patronised like I'm the hired help.
Ha ha yeah .. Hey welcome back CK .. good break?

  6. "So I want a '08 5P US std" Talk to Jon Shuker ..... He'll custom make you one to your spec for not a lot more money .. It will take a while of course ...
  7. Sounds like a great project. Very satisfying. Get a set of these Peavey Pop-out Casters They are great 'cos you can pop them out to stand on the stage or another cab (or to go in your boot). They stay in when you need them too and the sockets have a lower profile than cab feet ..
  8.
I was looking for a bass yesterday. I'm a guitarist, write/record songs and wanted to get some feel by using a real bass alongside my guitars and all the other synths/computers I use for everything else. Was looking at a Jap Fender and somehow stumbled upon an SX review and then this site. After trauling through this and other threads I just took the plunge and ordered this one... Any users of this bass and or advice for mods/strings etc? I play guitar in D tuning mostly so will have to do the same with bass so guess this affects strings. How important is the bridge mod? A lot of you seem to do it. Have seen a black gotoh for £27. Thanks in advance for any advice, am very excited, it was shipped today Elliott
Now look .. are you prepared for the possible Road to Damascus experience when you strap on a bass? Meanwhile, congrats on your purchase. That looks like a good one. D tuning I can't help you with .. I suggest you try the bass as it is when it turns up. To all intents and purposes the bits on the SX's are good enough for most things. You may find it will be fine without any changes other than a normal set up and trus rod tweak. - oh and a bit of gentle 800 grit sanding on the back of the neck to take the stickiness out of the laquer. The bridges are a tad weedy though and I have heard some have had intonation problems. The Gotoh 203 is a good alternative - usually cost about 20 quid posted. Looks like a Fender "bent tin" one but with a lot more solid construction. Let us know how you get on .. OG
  9.
let's see if he's willing to ship it to me
Hummmmmmm You may be better off getting one from Rondo - Cheaper purchase price (99 dollars) and I bet the shipping's not a lot more .. He only has lefties at the mo but his stock changes all the time

  13.
I've never had a bass from Jon, but I've had other instruments hand-made to my specification. Consider this. You've clearly put a lot of thought and money into getting Jon to build something that's unmistakeably yours. It's more than just something off the shelf, and will probably be something you'll play every day and cherish. Why not wait a few days until you can enjoy the experience of picking it up in person, talking to Jon about it, maybe getting anything sorted that needs sorting. That'll give you a special day that you'll always remember, that will make the bass even more special and personal. You aren't going to have too many days like that. Make the most of it.
+ a huge 1 Going and getting it is a very big part of the custom bass experience. and couriers ... hummmmmmm
  14.
I use http://www.uk2.net/ .. not the cheapest but they have hosted our site for years with no problems. If you are starting a new site with a new URL then you can get the space from the same company that registers your new URL for you. Then you should be able to avoid any transfer delays and frustrations. (quite common) You can just copy the old site files from the old space to your computer (and to a CD for safe keeping ) and then load them up to the new space when it's ready. That way you have no need to do any kind of linking to the old space and you can just abandon it and build yoru new site in the new space. Space is cheap so it shouldn't be a problem.
If you want a response from the forum you'll probably need to post a seperate question as this thread's been running for ages and people tend not to notice it
  15.
Yes, that's OK, thanks. I understand the Google thing. I'd still be interested in which hosting service providers people have had good experience with, as ours is cheap, but the support is built to match. Like I imagine getting them to buy me a new URL without losing the package and space we currently have will take a while on hold, followed by a series of "I''ll just put you through to someone who can't help you either."
I use http://www.uk2.net/ .. not the cheapest but they have hosted our site for years with no problems. 16.
We changed our band name and since I last looked at it the domain name/hosting market seems to have changed quite a bit. Where are you all buying your domain names/hosting packages? Any places to avoid? I suppose we could keep the existing hosting package (which is cheap) and just buy the new domain with forwarding. Any reason not to do that?
You don't need forwarding. Just ask your current host to rent/secure the new URL you want for you. Any of them can do that. It is then associated with your webspace. "Forwarding" is a technical term for when you have a pretend website and visitors get forwarded to your real space (under a different URL - usually a freespace bit) that process stops Google dead in its little robotic tracks and therefore should not be done. (unless you don't want anyone to find your site - say if it is purely for agents customers to use) OK? Cheers OG

  19.
I walked into Mccormacks Music in Glasgow and found I walked into SX city. SX Jazz basses in blue, red, black and 2 tone burst I think the price was £129... Got to say I'm tempted....
Someone needs to tell them about the buzz over the SXs Their website says "Your search for "sx" has produced no results. Please try a more general search." and they don't list them in their bass guitar section ..... You could A-B a Jim Deacon (199 in a pack) and their Stag G2 (90 quid) and SX basses .. I have a feeling they will all be very similar. Oh and beware the 21 fret SX jazzes - these usually come in the "bass pack" with amp, lead, bag. The ones I tried were not that good and certainly not in the same league as the 20 fret ones we have.
  20.
Seems a brilliant price at £435, as the cheapest I've seen over here is £699. Can you ship an acoustic from the States? I'm waiting for a response from the retailers about the possibility of this but it would concern me.
Lots of US shops are prevented from shipping to Europe by their suppliers. The cost of shipping (a solid) varies from about 50 quid if the shop will use the US Postal Service to $200 + if they want to use DHL or whatever .. Then you have to pay import duty, handling fee and VAT. So, it probably won't be worth the hassle in the end.
  21.
Yeah, secondary GAS for me in the guitar section. I am trying to talk a mate into getting one of the P90 equipped guitars just so I can have a go on it. P.
There's an SX Strat in my local Crack Converters .. did you find out if they are any good? It's not quite cheap enough to just get on spec and , as I know some of teh SX basses are not as good as other, I thought I'd ask ..

    custom bass?

  23.
Sorry OG, the irony was lost on me. I just assumed it was yet another person having a dig at Fender, which seems to be the thing to do these days. Clive.
Ah sorry .. It was me smiling an ironic smile holding my posh "improved Precison" and Fender finally realising that a 5 string P is a good idea (and I orginally got the idea from Mike Lull's P5 anyway when Bass Player reviewed his one in October 2005 .... ) http://www.bassplayer.com/article/mike-lull-v5/oct-05/13784 So finally Fender realise that a straightforward Precision with a B string would sell .....
  24.
"I have a photocopy of the original Union contract from the "Reach Out" session. It's dated July 6, 1966 (the year of the tune's release), it lists James Jamerson as the bassist (for which he received the princely sum of $61.00)..." madness!!!
There's loads and loads about this on t'web and, indeed, on the various versions of this very forum. Do a search if you have loads of time ..
  25. Current Guitar and Bass mag (March 2008) has a thing on Carole Kaye's basslines with tadpoles and tabs .. It's basic but pretty good. Interesting to hear about some of the tracks she actually did play on too. Eg I'm a Believer, Something Stupid, Suspicious Minds
