My dad got a bass player mate of his to make a bass, its a full size bass, but i got it when i was 5! thats quite some time ago. I have no idea what its made from, but it is a single pick up passive bass ,21 frets, wood finish , well varnished it is! it works and doesnt sound too bad . However there is no adjustment anywhere on it hence the action question. The fingerboard gets wildly out of tune as i work my way up the neck. I am blessed with a good ear, so it sounds like a night-mare to me! Ill never get rid of it as it raises a smile evertime i see it, but as an instrument it has its flaws. Wouldnt want to take it out in public! I will probably get a yam/Ibanez to start me off and get some lessons. at least these might be closer in tune with themselves! Matt (AB)
Ahhh... OK Got a picture? That sound like a nice wall bass (as oppoesed ot a WAL bass) but you really need something that can be adjusted. That way the bass will help you play and not present so many challenges .... Yes, a Yamaha or Ibanez and a few lessons would be a very good investment ..
Am laughing. Being the sort of handy , (possibly logical) person i am, i removed the bridge and made a new one. It is a simple bar affair, but it sems to have helped a bit. Am now down to a 4mm gap. Its started to buzz a bit tho. Hmmm
What sort of bass are you using? - ie make / model.
fellas! Umm, originally , i was trying to find out just how far my strings should be from the frets, as i could almost get my fingers through the gap on mine. This has been covered here , which is great, and many thanks for that, but i havent got as far as strings yet! what are you all on about!!! Strewth! cheers Matt (AB)
Ha ha sorry Just look upon it as a chat in the music shop with a few helpful people .. Tangents a go-go Re strings .. There's a load of discussions on the forum about that already - do a search ..
Soon to have an 11 too..... (.195 low C sharp...Im not satisfied till Ive made the USA move Tectonically a good few miles further out of vibration and fear)
couldn't just target that at one or two specific Americans could you?
Cheers OG, I keep it pretty low with a lighter playing approach and more power/volume from my amp. Freaked me out when I had my CIJ 62 the other week the vintage radius seems to give a higher action than the usual USA jazz radius. I've been tweaking the rod and making saddle adjustments for the last week or so
I just can't do it as well as Eltham so I just take the planks to him when they need doing. Once they are sorted properly it's a fairly rare occurrence as I stick with the same strings and don't tend to fiddle with my proper basses

Warwick Collection... what do you want and how much?
OldGit replied to warwickhunt's topic in Basses For Sale
Ok, Who are you and what have you done with Warwickhunt?
If you need it i can look after an infinity for you, no charge
Oh you were just ahead of me there, except my offer would end with "the Dolphin" Maybe we could organise an bass exercising schedule for seldom used collections like this, like those people that exercise dogs for people who are too busy ..... Your Warwicks could go out and play a few dozen times a year and avoid the atrophy they suffer if they never see an audience -
Yep! he's manly alright....he's got a niner.......so I heard
Yup takes a man to play that for a few hours .. I couldn't .. Very special.
nice one ARGH, I just find using 110's madness, I lose all the ringing tone of a 105. I just put some 50's on for a gig tomorrow night, the band tune down a semi tone so it helps keep the tension......can I be in the heavy gang now?????
Wow Arrgh! You are so, well, manly
I feel like a light weight with all this High action stuff going on
You are not alone mate. My soft southern fingers like Elixirs and my weak typists hands like light strings .. Works for me though
Ah, right many thanks for that. although i must say, the last time i was in SC I asked for some help and didnt get any! No one was inetersted in selling me a new bass thath i really cant play very well yet! they probably work on commission were my thoughts, and i wasnt going to spend enough. however, they are still very close to me and do have a wide selection..hmmmm
Sorry I should have explained, he deosn't work for Sound Control (though they do have a good bloke called Joe on basses in there. Seek him out for help next time) Eltham just rents the space from them. Call him first to book a slot and make sure he's there. Don't just leave it with the SC people. You need some hands on time with Eltham so he can sus what you need. 07971 240296
Yes - it will allow more highs through. If that doesn't work, try a 1meg. Um, why would it allow more highs through? A pot is a simple resistance, which doesn't vary with frequency. Quick summary of resistances/impedances: Resistor (fixed or variable): a resistance which doesn't vary with frequency Capacitor: impedance which is inversely proportional to frequency - blocks DC completely, then the impedance falls as the frequency rises Inductor (coil): impedance which is directly proportional to frequency - so it increases as the frequency rises The effect of changing the volume pot is that (IIRC) it forms a potential divider with the pickup, so as the frequency rises, the proportion of the signal voltage across the volume pot would decrease. However, I don't know what the impedance of the pickup is - I would have thought it would have a pretty negligible effect, otherwise there just wouldn't be any top end. Oh hang on, it's a Precision, isn't it?
Cheeky Well I'm a bit lost by that .. new strings arrived today so I'll try that first then .. .. should try the 500 k vol pot to see if things brighten up a bit? Then it's a pup swap to see if that makes a difference .. I have a Fender P pup lying around .. It's a bit old though and I understand they loose power as they get old ... or is that an old wives tale?
Well what with Bristol being a Uni town, I understand that many of the clubs are pretty good on Friday & Saturday nights... Ah. Not that sort of action. Whoops, sorry. You pretty much said it yourself... it's a personal thing. The default height is whatever feels best for you. Sorry if this is a bit vague! Your best bet is to take your bass to a friendly repair/service bod and get him to sort it out.
Seek out the Welsh Wizard, Eltham Jones in the back of Sound Control in Bristol. Tell him I sent you and he'll be gentle. Go along and play in front of him. He'll then have a very good idea of what kind of action you may feel comfortable with. He can also gove your bass a once over to make sure the nut and frets are all working with you and not against you. I have very low action and very light strings. Works for me but I don't mind a bit of rattle.

I guess we should also have a "things for sale at the bass bash " thread too
The varitone can be wired with a tone control as well but i just wired it with a volume, very simple hookup and incredibly useful, mine was used with a single darkstar ( big single coil) and with a simple click of a knob i could go from a deep dubby sound to Motown to almost Ricky like bite. Admittedly the Darkstar played a part but it was a very useful set up one which i may well recreate with a cheapo SX or similar, personally i don't see the point of adding a tone pot, i got a simple setup which worked much better than any other passive basses i had owned and had all the variation i needed
OK Thanks Steve.
Because for every one OldGit or Perry who really does appreciate the service, there are 1000 other customers who are only interested in the cheapest deal and will even attempt to lowball that. Internet sales have taken the pile-it-high, sell-it-cheap concept to the limit and it's getting harder and harder for the decent shops to stay in business. Ultimately the market will support a certain number of specialists, and I guess what we're seeing is this shaking out. No surprise that the Brune St. Bass Centre has gone, particularly given that the main man is now fully occupied selling Brian May skinny-string replicats. I never visited the Wapping shop so I don't have anything to compare it to, but there are other examples of shops that were great for customers but bad for business - any Manc types of a certain age might remember Sounds Acoustic, for example.
We live in interesting times.

Ah! From the "please explain pots" thread "That said, my Squier 70's VMJ has 500k for single coils. Gives a Brighter edge to dark-sounding pick-ups... " Would a 500k pot brighten my darker sounding P pickup?
Clip-on horn mics are a great idea, but are they man enough for some jobs? Baritone sax for example?
Ha ha ha Nice of you to think of us Rich Static it's got to be a Sennheiser 421. Expensive and has a delicate clip - they have been making these for about 30 years now and still haven't fixed the delicate clip problem ... However the sound is superb live and you'll often see pro sound systems use these for tenors and baritones, as well as drums The alternative is an EV RE20.. Gorgeous sound but a tad delicate ... Of course an SM57/58 on a stick is cheap and good enough for rock and bad sound men/ loud guitar bands Wireless/ Clip on ... I've been reading "Sax on the Web" and lots of people are using lapel mics, carefully aimed across the bell at the G hole rather than into it and getting pretty OK results. Most used seems to be the Audio Technica ATR 35 Lapel Microphone. which is just 23 quid. You may need a preamp though depending on what you plug it into ... But It would be worth trying the Sennheiser Freeport "Presenter" wireless system an its lapel clip to see how it is.
OK, I'm up for this. My Shuker 6 and G&L L2000 are probably 'run of the mill' enough not to bother bringing - is anyone interested in trying a Bergantino NV610 or a mid 70's Ampeg V4? I think a liftshare thread is needed, although I've got a small car so could probably only carry one person after gear! Good idea on the minibuses if there are enough takers, but i notice that there's not much response from the Bristolians on here yet.
I'll be driving past the M4 end of the M32 and may have room if you can get to Hambrook ...
