I too am guilty of ownership of a fantastic SX bass, purchased secondhand recently for the pittance of Aus$80 (less than 40 quid). I'm in the process of getting Mick Brierley to build me some custom pups (as he does so well). This is the model I got: In a few pieces at the moment while I configure her to my taste. Tortoiseshell pick guard is on its way to me in the post as we speak Old Git Any recommendations as to which pots to use? The pups going in are passive.
£40? Worth every penny! Pots? Use what it has. I seriously doubt you'll notice the difference if you fit CTS pots... Tortie, yeah Looks good .. after having a two pickup bass for a bit I can see the attraction, specially if it can sound like a normal P as well. Bung a nice bridge on first ..

Dep gig playing stand in for my mate who was depping for the absent bass player .. mate goes sick on Thursday so last minute rush to arrange everything, child care and stuff, and learn the two tunes in teh set I'd heard but not learned in detail. Just two out of 24 so not too arduous. Nailed them on Friday, swift run through the set on Saturday morning to make sure and then paring down my normal stage rig to keep it as simple as pssible but to cover all the possibilities involved in depping with an unknown band with an unknown PA in an unknown room. In the end I decided to take everything except my radio mics ... 2 pm the evening's child care phones in sick hummmmm.. so, organise a workaround then just about to start loading the car when the drummer calls .. he's the band's player manager as far as I could tell. Apparently the singer and guitarist have ejected their toys and had a hissy fit about working with an unknown bass player ... They'd rather pull the gig than risk it ... nope, my reputation hadn't preceded me, "they're just bl00dy kids", said the drummer... So, no playing for me .. sad as the set list was nice stuff to play and loud Classics from Free, Bad Co, Thin Lizzie, Whitesnake, Kaiser's - basically Jeremy Clarkson's jukebox .... Sunday morning I got an email - truculent kids sacked new people responding to the adverts already Fast mover this guy. He'd managed to dep in a band to the venue and keep that relationship too. So I didn't get to play but I got to see Rich play Cardiff and made a valuable contact for future ref ... more of a draw than a win but no a bad result ..

To minimise outlay for maximum effect, I'd suggest changing things in this order, assessing as you go ... Strings, Gotoh 203 bridge (very much like the new US fender bridge) £20 Nut: Corian, Brass or bone probably about £25 fitted by a luthier. I'd keep everything else unless it sounds bad and then go for PUP (thumper's seem to be very popular) Pots/capacitor/wiring/jack Couple of grolsh strap locks instead of schallers, plate change is up to you, Fender logo? well on that a spoof logo would be fun (see the Misceleneous parts and stuff suppliers list
Hey Barney, we recently got a pair of these from Thomann which are great. Bought some floor stands and put one either side of the stage on auto. They go through a cycle of about 6 colours and look great - better than traffic lights. And as people have mentioned they don\'t get hot. Good old Thomann... Edit: adding picture
Just fixing the links: Can link http://www.thomann.de/gb/stairville_led_pa...alu_schwarz.htm Stand link http://www.thomann.de/gb/prod_AR_196226.html -

Mind you, the MC5 looks pretty good too.
Better make sure you finish your set on time tonight then so I can whoooooosh home and watch it

Just put your P away for 6 months and play your Stingray. You don't want to be begging for it back in a year. -
Rugby Hmmm indeed. Still, it will be good to see the Boys turn Wales over tomorrow (Jeez I wish)
Hum I just keep my mouth shut on game days -
i don't mind! it will be rocking bass i will put black gaffa tape from the bottom or something. Nam the price and we have deal:) so maybe now my squier will be little bit SX:) haha
Ha ha well I have to hear back from the guy I bought the plate from first as, strictly speaking, it's his as he screwed up and then sent the replacement ... It's not an SX one mate, it's an AXL ...
I think i'm going to go Active Si. Either that or 2 J PUP's. I've fitted the Thumper now and given it a run out. It's a bit better but hmmmm, not sure...
Jon's active eq stuff is great. I guess with stacks you can get 6 rotary controls on a normalish P scratch plate if you have a jack plate on the edge of the body inna PJ stylee .... J pups on a P body always look wrong to me .. Still that's what custom's are alllllll about Do you elevate your cab? I know it's a "hear it anywhere really clearly" Schroeder but it may help anyway Rugby eh? Hummmm -
OHM, how 'bout I leave it here to pick up some ideas them move it to Laying to see if you pick up more.... Win win eh?
We have a thread on Laying? Damn! How did I miss that? OHM That's rather nasty problem .. Have you decided on a PUP for your P5 yet? Might be worth talking to Jon about it. Meanwhile try earplugs, mate .. You'll find you can hear all sorts of things better once you get used to them and you can use them when you are an audient too. Don't think you can do that with IEM lugplugs. -
I forgot to mention to you that my Clark Kent's job is making coffee in COSTA Coffee if you will find the pickguard I would be interested as I want to modded the squier as cheap as possible! for now the costs are: 30 for bass 10 for pickup hah want to change pickguard (black or tort like your basses) probably bridge. cheap as chips haha! should name it cheapy lane!
Ha ha we should have a "how cheap can you make a bass for" competition. I have the Fender "vintage style" bridge from my SX too if you want that, and various odd knobs and pots
Had an email from Jon the other day saying it is 'not a million miles away now'. Whatever that means
Oh he's importing them ready made from China now .. it'll be in Liverpool docks, in a container somewhere ...
He needs me to come and check the neck out soon, early next week I think. So I'll get a look at it then - though I have no camera
You can surely borrow a camera for this momentous occasion???
However, if it is the neck I'm checking out, that indicates to me that most of the woodworking shuold have been done, right? so just routing and putting electric gubbins and finishing left... 'Just'.
Like I said, Easter
Old Git my fellow SX lover, I have seen you make a reference to using 800 grit rubdown treatment, resisting the opportunity to make lewd comment about the whole rubdown business, can you tell me what's involved here. I'm am the very proud owner of a SX SJB LTD2 which is truly special but the gloss on the neck can get a bit lacklustre and thus sticky, cheers for that and keep pluggin' those special ones. I'll look after the Irish branch of the European SX Appreciation Society!
Hiyah The "800 grit" refers to very fine wet/dry paper. You can get it from any DIY place. The process is this: 1 Place the bass on its face on your work bench 2 Brew a top notch coffee. I like Rossa beans ground fine for an espresso machine. Two shots through a Briel Duo coffee maker, each shot should just fill a small espresso cup. Pour that into a warmed mug with a widish mouth. I like the Portmeirion Flower series. The clay is just the right thickness and it has a pleasing, chunky, feel to it. Tall narrow mugs are Ok too but that affects the crema... Using semi skimmed fresh and cold milk, in a Turkish coffee maker jug, bring up to about 125 degrees with teh milk heater wand and tap the jug on the work surface a few times to settle it before pouring. The amount of air/steam you blend in is down to taste but I like a thick "Starbucks" top on my coffee rather than a traditional South Wales Italian Cafe thin and milky latte ... Bring that to your work area and drink a few mouthfuls whilst you mentally prepare yourself for steps 3 and 4. 3 Remind yourself that this is an SX bass and not a Shuker, Musicman, or pre-cbs Fender. It cost £20 to make and has little or no mojo of it's own. It really deosnt matter a whole lot if you totally mash it up cos a new one is less than a Squier..... Now, say a few Om's and focus 4 Take the 800 grit paper and rub it gently up and down the back of the neck 'til the surface is dull 5 Wipe with slightly damp cloth to remove the dust. 6 Play the bass 7 play a hot 'n' sweaty gig or two and review the situation. You may need to do it again at that point.
ohh man! This bass sounds lush! looks great sounds great! let me know if you will want to sell it! your sx-> bassman setting on zoom b2.1u-> hohner combo sounds nice:) hah! BTW do you still have the black pickguard? after edit: I forgot to thank you for chance to play & talk to you cheers!
Nice to meet you too, Matt, and to try a Sansamp and the Ibanez distort .. both good at what they do ... The black perloid pickguard is in limbo at the mo - the guy sent a replacement but has not responded to any communication since so i don't knwo if he wants this one back or whatever .... .. I'll try again.. Did you want it?
Being a complete ignoramus as far as lighting goes, I was wondering - what does "par" (or "PAR") mean, other than what Colin Montgomery goes over and Tiger Woods goes under? Anyone feel like doing a Wiki on the subject?
I've started a wiki entry but haven't quite got the Wiki formatting thing sussed so its there at the top level rather than being a "chapter" or whatever wiki speak fo rthat is .... It also needs input from you knowledgeable lighting people on more sophisticated systems -
Jon does a good job of being vague It should be really nearly done - the parts are all being glued together now I think. But I still think the process probably could have gone a little quicker... It wasn't far behind that stage when I saw him 6 weeks or so ago. I know he's busy, so I'm not too fussed, but I wouldn't mind a picture now and again! Jon put his date back again to mid/late February last time I saw him, so I'm guessing I won't see this while March o_O
So its while March Any news?
