Thanks for both of your replies guys! That's interesting stuff about the Crafters. I must admit, i prefer the look of the Ibanez, but it's not all about that i know!
Just in case it's the same, the scale length of mine was a 32" .....
I really don't understand the problem with people doing this. He could have just put it up on eBay and not told us. Caveat Emptor as ever but at least we know about it now.

I had the Crafter BA400 acoustic (4 string.) Not the one you are looking at but the Crafters seem to be good all round so relevant. Very good for the money. Nice neck and very good "live friendly" and usable controls including feedback defeating phase switch and a mute which was essential for turning the thing off without changing the volume settings.
Just bought a Markbass Micromark - just before the price hike (they seem to have gone up about £90 in the last few weeks) and was just wondering what other users experiences were of them. I bought it based on reviews (like a fool !) and for the price was extremely disappointed. I expected to pay a premium for the small size and it sounds ok but you only have to look at it and you overdrive it ! If it cost £150 it would be worth considering, but in some places it's now £390 + £50 for a tweeter box. I'm getting a better sound out of a Samson Resolv 65A active monitor which I got for nothing ! A valuable lesson learned !
Take it back and gt your money back under the sale of goods act "fit for purpose" bit Take the description from the seller's or the Markbass websites and teh reviews) in with you and say "go on then, show me how" If it can't do what it's supposed to do then you have grounds for a total refund.

You might like to talk to Rich on here about his 5 string Shuker Jazz. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showuser=77 It's not for sale but it's a fabulous Jazz-style bass. Loads of people on here have played it at bashes and there's always a chorus of praise afterwards. Also Bassdirects's (Poptart) Nordy's http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...le_Natural.html

62' P bass .. nicked in the mid eighties .. oh and that waistline .. lost somewhere in the 90's ...
At the moment undecided whether to leave au naturel or block-colour spray finish (foam green?). PS. So now I have a plywood HB P.Bass body collecting dust in my study instead
That looks nice natural. I think that grain would really come out if finished nicely ... If there's no finish on it right now you can get an idea of how it will look laquered by dampening it slightly Re the old body I think they are "plywood" when you are buying and "laminated" when selling

Can you 'slap' a Stagg EDB rockabilly-style?
OldGit replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I haven't got my Stagg anymore, but from memory I think it's a piezo bridge pickup with very limited controls (vol and tone). It should be relatively easy, however, to fit a mag pickup on the fingerboard. Most successful slappers seem to have additional electronics to help out.
It's got a piezo and a sound chamber so it picks up any slaps against the fingerboard and stuff .. I can't slap so I don't know how successful it would be for your thang though ... -
Love P basses. Had loads, been unfaithful many a time but in the end the i always end up going home to the Precision ... So I have a Shuker custom made Precision style bass with 5 strings. I got Jon to change a few things to address some of the shortcomings in me ... So ..it sits perfectly, the 1st fret is easy to reach, it has 21 frets and a slightly different shape lower horn and cut away so I can play that high E (yes I do use it). It does almost everything I need, most of the time. At some time it will be joined by a 4 string version - the JJ Burnel P bass Shuker makes, probably. Leo got it 80% right in '57, IMHO. The other 20% is what you get from a Jazz, Actives, all carbon basses, dinky Steinberger bodies, headless, GUS basses (gorgeous!), 5 and more strings and other "modern" BigRedX type things, all of which I'd like in my exensive collection. But, if I had to live with just one, it woudl be a Precision, no contest.
gay gordens can be done to muse's hysteria....
Oh thanks I'll look into that We tend to morph things once they have the hang of the dance .. Gay Gordon is a classic simple dance that everyone gets wrong - looks hilarious from on stage as they fail to get the concept of "turn around and continue in the same direction", ie walking backwards, and all crash into each other Doesn't seem to matter how many times we show them that bit, someone fails to grasp it ...
-
i think dancing is good. Not enough of it generally in our society! Your band sounds like a whole load of fun (to dance too, i have no idea about playing that sorta stuff) I have seen scottish Ceilidh bands that had the loud lively electric and eclectic badge, up here they would be lumped in the same group as the trad ones. I went with a group of friends to South Uist for new year a few years ago, we go invited to the local new years day ceilidh, that was something else. Everyone knows the dances, flings hard and no calling, not even the name of the dance- you recognise it fae the introduction.... oh and you get the mothers introducing you to their daughters!
ha ha yeah .. I imagine the expat scots are more traditional than the Scots themselves. We once (way back) got booked for Burns night in Bristol by an adventourous organiser looking for something different. She was but the crowd wern't ... a very uncomfortable night ensued including a whole table of people making a cermonial departure half way through giving us the evil eye ... We don't do Burns now - but 2 guys in the band plays it in a trad band so it's no problem turning them down anyway .. We have done Scots flavoured nights but the structured nature and concept of "right" tunes for specifc dances doesn't really fit our style. After one such evening a 60 something very miltary type on his way out turned on his heel and marched up to the stage, ramrod straight, kilt swinging. I was a tad nervous but he came up to thank us, in his Cheltenham officer's accent, for a very entertaining night and for giving him the opportunity to dance ceilidh dancing to the Rolling Stones ... It's a lot of fun to play as well as dance ... big smiles all round.
I am endeavouring to get my money back. And I'm just kicking myself that I paid instantly for it instead of waiting a couple of minutes to read the emails from you guys. There were lots of checks I should have done before buying the bloody thing! My concern with this case is that the guy who is selling it is rather stupid. So this will only add to the frustration in dealing with it. As I've already paid for the item I've just got to check what my rights are as a buyer to then return the goods. I've asked for a refund now to save him all the hassle before he sends it but we'll just have to see what happens. Cheers for the help though!
So Spychal, How did you get on? if you need it I have a series of messages to him on my ebay log (before the auction ended) covering the stuff about it probably being a fake ...
-
fascinating reading about 'english ceilidhs' in the links from your website btw oldgit. It's all a bit different up here!
yeah Fortunatel;y Webfeet have defined English Ceilidh and that fits us nicely ... We had to describe what we do, partly cos English audiences can't pronounce "Ceilidh" and partly cos the Webfeet definition describes what we (and loads of other bands) do - loud, lively, eclectic and electric .. No fiddle, no piano accordian, no kilts .. The understanding of what a Ceilidh or Ceili is varies so much .. and we don't do what a Scots ceilidh band would do either

Oh excellent.. I like the real signature. nice touch.... So when do you gig it?
I only got it yesterday so still experimenting but basically had it aimed at the bridge about 6-8 inches away with the front mics , which have a 90 degree pick up ( the rear ones do 120 degrees so better for bands, ambience, etc). IIRC, the gain was on Medium with the level boosted a tiny bit. Did pick up my breathing a lot but a bit of time sorting out positioning would cure that. Haven't tried recording arco yet, may try that later. Haven't experimented enough with it yet but so far I'm very impressed. Cheers Alun
That all sounds positive. I like breathing sounds on recordings of acoustic instruments ... or Keith Jarrett grunting
Hi, just wondering if anyone has ever attempted miking up an EUB? I've sometimes been frustrated by the fact that the acoustic sound of my Wav isn't always that faithfully reproduced by the piezo pickup so this morning I tried recording a little using the internal mics on a Zoom H2 recorder and voila - very realistic upright bass I may need too much mic gain for live work ( might try it next week as I've got a couple of gigs on upright) but for recording it sounds great. Cheers Alun
Haw did you do that Alun? got an H2 in teh post so I'm curious about its capabilities .. Meanwhile my mate who plays doghouse has just bought a pickup system that has a piezo and two mics as well ...
We did our Elvis gig last night - 'bout 300 people there from all walks of life - Hells Angels too. Storming night, severe hangover this morning coupled with the worry that the rest of the band want to do the Elvis thing semi-permanently. A little less constipation if you please....
Elvis! Yes! Brilliant bass lines... Watching the Detectives is fab...

Plenty of us have US sourced chinese SX basses but I don't know enough about Nonames or Mex P basses to comment on the relative quality.

I've already thought about the next project I can get Jon working on...
h ha go on then ... I may have to get a Shuk JJB 4 string at some point .. my POS SX P is Ok but when i play it I miss the Shuker P5 sound and playability and lights and neck -
It's so much better. I really miss the P Bass and the width of the neck (the Jazz feels like a broom handle in comparison) but sonically it's so much more in my range. The pickups are a bit quiet, so I might put some Wizards in to it. Very happy though
Phew I thought you were going to have a long term problem .. You could do a hybrid Jazz with a P neck if you don't get on with it ... or Jon could knock you up a special with a wide neck ... -
