1. Yeah Hope I look that good when i'm that old (er 4 years time )
 2. Blige It's at £200 should we tell him?
 3.
Hi Mr Fudge, can you see fit for me to use your photo of NWR as my avatar? If not, I will remove it. Cheers Steve.
I think we should all have Norm for our avatars on NWR day on the 15th of Feb each year in recognition of his contribution to stonkin' bass lines.
 4.
I have four kids from 3 to 11. If any of them showed the remotest interest in any instrument my money would be right there on the table. It's potentially one of the best gifts that you can ever give them and well worth a 'gamble'. If it doesn't stick there's always eBay. Despite having hoards of instruments I can't get any of them interested in ANYTHING so far - but my 7 yr old daughter did ask for a pink plectrum when we were in a store last summer.
Yeah I'm there too. My 10 year old lad doesn't want to learn anything musical. If he did I'd be right there helping in any way I could. It's cheap to get started on a bass but let her choose one (and an amp) for a set budget. There's no way you'll get it right if she's 13 so don't even bother trying. Google will sort her out and check with the people on here if you are concerneed at all. Then there will be lessons at school, school groups, saturday schools in adult ed and arts centres, or just jamming along with mates and records. If she retains any of here flute music training that will help. Bass is also a "one note at at time" instrument (unlike piano or guitar) so the converstion should be easier. and if she bails after a few months you'll still be able to sell teh gear to the next kid ...
 5.
We do some wedding/party type gigs but make a point of getting the organiser along to another gig beforehand to ensure that we really are what they want.
I spend a fair amount of time "educating" gig organisers. Loads of them have no idea of what makes a good night for their audience (as well as us) That way everyone has a good time.
 6.
.... and don't forget Dance The Night Away and Wonderful Tonight!!!
Have a trawl through the "playing weddings" thread and the floor filler's thread - "Please the mothers!" is rule number one ... forget wat the couple want, that won't win the evening ... Playing weddings: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;#entry56924 Guaranteed Dance floor Fillers http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...l=floor+fillers We are pretty much sorted out for getting gigs so we get to turn down the 20 or so gigs we get offered each week for dates we already have booked We specialise on weddings, parties, fundraisers, etc ... But we make it very obvious what they are getting .... No surprises ... We turn down any Siaint's day's gigs - Patrick's, Andrew's, George's (for goodness sake, what do you expect us to play for an English theme night?) and we get offered them every year, and Burns night. I'm sure they just go "Ceilidh band eh Thattle do". It won't, mate, read the website! No sound limiters, no "can half the band come for half the money?" gigs. Nothing that isn't at least a half hearted attempt at at barn dance. That's all we do... that plus rock and blues an soul and stuff but no barn dance, no gig .... No Irish/Scottish theme nights (we are not Irish, or Scottish) No afternoon gigs - grown ups don't do barn dancing in daylight so we don't want to play to just the kids so we are not the band for you ... Just today I had an enquiry that was very precise: "the people not dancing should be able to hear each other to talk whilst you are playing" er Ok so you want a band that is loud enough for the dancing drunk, noisy, shouting and screaming loud dancers but quiet enough for people to talk ...? hum no thanks... No early starts on week nights without a doubled fee - why they think we will happily take a half day off work to play their party, at no cost to them is beyond me We also don't do "charity rates" gigs for private schools, even though they are still charities, or political parties .... And ... mileage is a quid a mile from our declared starting point so yes, we will play a Spring Break students' festival on a Monday in Truro but not for cover's band in a pub fee that won't even pay for the fuel tax ...... had that offer recently .. "but you may be on the telly" sorry, we don't need that. So yeah .. we turn a few down
 7. I like the Jazz covers
 8.
I've seen him a few times with Wilko Johnson - I love his live bass sound. Very, very "in yer face" Here's a YouTube clip of the pair of them - I can't hear the bass brilliantly through my crappy office freebie headphones but it should give you an idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0sSQtFj42E...feature=related
Oh excellent .. Wilko is brilliant too That's a great combination.
 9.
I recall seeing an article a few months ago in one of the Bass Magazines that showed Norman receiving his brand new rig from Trace Eliott. It was taller than him!!
Either that's a very old magazine or he's not using the new rig Re the EQ settings, if his ears are much like mine that's probably a mid peak so what's left of his hearing can work for him and the rest of teh settings are set by the sound man so it sounds good out front ....
 10.
I've been very happy with my H2. With a bit of experimentation I have found some settings that yield decent recordings - the balance between a good level and avoiding distortion that is hard to stay on top of while also concentrating on playing. I used to use a minidisk unit but the H2 wins on every count. For example, if I do notice the levels are a bit high, it is possible to nudge them down without stopping and restarting. Most important of all, I get usable digital files at the end of the session (192KB MP3 works for me as a good compromise between oodles of recording time and a decent sound, bearing in mind that I'm not in a position to attend to a careful mix while performing) - I might need to chop them down to individual tracks but it is still a drag and drop transfer to my computer. Wulf
Thanks That's what I'm looking for mostly - though the H4 mic and line plugging capabilities are activating my imagination a bit I too have a Sony MD plus mic but I've never been able to get things off the MD in a usable form and this just seems like a quantum leap.
 11.
while i don't have any experience with the h2 the H4 is a great piece of kit, if you can stretch to the H4 it has more options via the hybrid 1/4 xlr inputs, you might not need them now but at least you have the option to use external mic's or to record from a DI or desk, plus it's handy as a headphone amp etc.
Thanks. good points and I guess for a feed from a mixing desk as well ... Humm Gary you may have a point ...
 12. Nudge ... any more points?
 13.
we have got an official site that my mate Paul H on here sorted for us. www.thebusbybabes.net I use the freewebs thing because I've found it very simple. I suppose I ought to get of my backside in gear and sort out a new format. The official one is obviously a bit more serious but there is a link to the freewebs one which is fyll of sh*te. Cheers....
ha ha yeah I've seen that one before - hard to forget
 14.
Can't own up to ZZ Top, but we do play this town aint big enough for the both of us donning berets and black gaffa tape moustaches.
hey matey, I followed your link to your website and it tried something that raised a "site tried to load a virus" flag in Norton and spyware ... Freespace will do that sort of thing sometimes .. better to shell out 30 quid and move your site to paid for space .. helps Google too ... OG ...
 15. As I couldn't find an 8 ohm version of this one to exchange it for, and therefore couldn't get another to make up my stack I got a pair of Bergantino AE112's instead. Otherwise I'd have been very happy with two 1212L's .. oh well ... So ....... This is now for sale. I'm waiting for a couple of people to get back to me who PM'd earlier but I thought I'd wake the thread up again in case there's other interested people Schroeder 1212L it has the super titanium tweeter (that's the later one), carpet covering and a proper Schroeder cover. Spec etc is here on the Schroeder website 800 watts from a relatively small box. There's plenty of opinions about it on Basschat and Talkbass if you do a search. Notably audible in a band mix and, of course, light and easily lifted with one hand. I'll do some proper pictures but it's basically unmarked. New in May 2007, it's hardly had any serious exercise, about 10 medium and 3 very quiet gigs in total, and it has an official Schroeder shipping box. They are currently £600 from SHX plus the cover so I'm looking for £450 plus shipping (£30?) or petrol money (and "Get into Wales" tax) if you want me to deliver it. Thanks, OG
 16.
Just back early from a support job to Wishbone Ash. Guitar player tried to get a laugh out of me cos I had the ZZ beard on - said over the Mic 'does your wife like it tickling her snatch'. I shouted 'No but yours did'. Place fell apart but he was none too pleased !!!!!
ha ha one up to the bass player Zed Zed Top and Wishbone Ash? I'd have loved to have attended that gig .. Wishy are one of my fave bands.
 17.
Number 1 in your list OG
Dep me in on those any time
 18.
Sounds like the start to Boots . My heart does a little skip when its time to play that run at the start solo.
I found it helped to have my drummer tap the beat on the Hi Hat. Then it kind of holds together even if I have problems sliding up the neck at the right speed ... and he then comes in on time for the next bit
 19.
The problem with fret markers on a upright is, how accurate they are is dependent on your height due to the angle of incidence. I know the chaps who make these things are trying to be helpful but as a double bass player I have never had need for them and in truth I think they can be a minor distraction.
I know what you mean but for us numpties they are a good general indicator of the kind of general area where we may find, say, a high E on the G string to start a tune off ... That's the main thing for me.
 20.
The gig was fine, it was just that it was in Carlisle, nothing wrong with the place, its just five and a half hours from my house, and worse, I had to be back in London by 11:00 this morning. That was a tough 24 hrs.
Wow The dosh/kudos/craic must have been good for you to say yes to that one ....
 21.
Yeah figures. Cant think of a way round that at the mo.
I guess the drain may be no more than an active bass guitar but that blue light just makes it look like its munching through the power ...
 22.
Oh..forgot to say you don't have to worry about distortion much, just adjust the internal mic gain (only three positions) to suit the environment. The internal mics seem very good (and can "emulate" SM57 or Neumans...but I've no idea how accurate these are). BB
Thanks I read that modeling stuff in the H4 I guess that' handy of you are recording an istrument straight in ... I don't thingk the H2 has it though ...
 23. Stick a Gotoh 203 fenderish bridge on it. Best 20 quid you'll spend ... Ebay shop selling Gotoh 203 bridge
 24. Hi I posted this on the end of another thread so, rather than hijack it here's a new thread of its own ... I'm looking for a way to record rehearsals (some with 20 + horns and a section) and mini-demos with a small no hassle recorder that produces something I can easily put onto my MP3 player, PC and CDs .. This is just for me to learn the tunes, mostly. No requirement for great quality beyond the ability to hear things clear enough on playback and avoiding overload distortion (used to get that on cassette recorders - yup it's been that long since I did anything like this ... Looks like those that have them like Zoom H2's ... any difficulties with them or other makes and models to look at? H4? Am I right in thinking you can load the recordings into sound editing software such as Cubase LE (I have that somewhere) and then add tracks etc? Thanks OldGit, recording numpty .....
