2.
Agreed. I guess I am asking, do we delude ourselves when we act without integrity in order to fool ourselves into believing that we have it?
Too many carrots
 3.
Do we need to feel that we have integrity in order to feel ok about ourselves?
Absolutely! It's just not always the most pressing need.
 4.
I'm guessing it makes bugger all difference where the deal originates Si, I imagine it's dependent on how conservative (or otherwise) your seller is with his valuation.
Probaby right Yes I've eBay Msg'd a few of his customers too .. They don't have to answer ..
 5.
Nope but bought from other frequent Japan eBayer, Lenoirvinyles (or similar) - reason for replying is to warn that you have to pay c20% tax on import from Japan as well as postage so it does bump up the cost - that said I got my nice 1990s Ramones-alike P bass that way for an all-in cost of just over £300 (helped by seller declaring a "conservative" value for the bass to customs )
Yes that was my next question I know theres the info on importing guitars that Dood wrote - but that's from Ishibashi etc.. ie companies ... I was wondering what the duty hit would be from an eBay deal.
 6. I'm looking at the rather nice used basses that chingo123 has for sale on ebay. http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZchingo123 He's in Japan. Really good feedback, frequent flyers (some then selling the stuff in their own countries) etc. It all looks great.. So, has anyone on here bought from him? OG
 7. Wow That's a lot of Phil Jones' ikkle speakers

 9.
Or is that an oversimplification?
No, but there are also different criteria for integrity. Spot on tribute bands, inventive covers bands and Jazz/rock/whatever originals all have integrity. IMHO
 10. - I look down upon him because I play from the music with panache and style and to a very small exclusive audience - I look down upon him because I play my own version of covers to packed pubs every Saturday night - I look down on them because I earn a fortune playing in a Wurzels Tribute band.

 12.
Yes, I have tried a markbass lmk 11 and it was a nice sound with both filters on full, the treble and mids turned off and the bass turned up, but their small speaker cabs were not happy with such low frequencies above quite moderate volume levels. The Bergantino 12" cab is a contender if it will satisfy my deep bass needs unless anyone has any other suggestions ?
I've got the Markbass LMK (liek a two channel Litte Mark II) and a pair of Bergantino AE12's . I've only had the cabs a few weeks (just one gig) so I've not tried them properly on my Reggae setting. I'll get the chance on Saturday Incidentally the VPP filter adds top as well as bottom (It's a scoop shape) so you may want to try that turned off. Actually I don't use the filters at all. For reggae I turn the high stuff off and the bass and mid bass up to 3/4. However I'm not a specialist or playing in a reggae band so your needs may differ .. Edit: The Schroeder 1212L I had before was brilliant at soft, smooth and creamy sub bass but I don't think one alone would do it in a full blown reggae band. You'd probably need 2. OG
 13.
Absolutely bloody wonderful. Almost as much fun is checking out the sparseness of the kit, how tatty most of it is, the complete lack of on-stage props/fireworks/lightshows/girly vocalists/disco dancers/back-projected movies/appeals for charity donations/etc. Yet strangely, even without all those modern improvements, it still sounds ... well ... better. The only thing lacking was a shot of "Jesus" dancing madly at the front of the crowd in his striped kaftan and sandals. Anyone else remember "Jesus"? I'm showing my age, aren't I?
Ha ha yes Things have moved on .. All Right Now wouldn't even get air play if it was new now Thank goodness it isn't .. Also that simple gear was great then but Jack Bruce has an interview in one of the current mags. He said Cream tried all their classic old gear for the reunion last year but it sounded like s''t That was also the first big gig to use onstage monitors (you can see them - WEM cabs as side fills and behind the drums ) Not sure how I'd cope now without monitors ..

My favourite is the fender - it makes my heavy ash 81 precision seem less of a boat anchor. 15.
I just think if people stopped accepting covers bands, people would realise that their audience is more accommodating than we think and have more brains than we give then credit for. If the material is strong, they will get it. Remember, every song they ever hear they had to hear for the first time!
You really want your audience to work hard don't you? You should be playing concerts, not gigs, with a seated audience who are there to listen to the music and appreciate what you are doing. I'm a big fan of that kind of event, including jazz clubs and folk clubs where you get severely stared at if you talk through the performaces :0, but not when I'm out for a loud social evening in a pub. Then I don't want to have to work hard .. I just want to see a live band playing good stuff well presented that's either known to me or easy enough to pick up on first hearing. Fresh 'n' New is OK in it's place but Hard to Handle will get my feet moving every time.
Some of the other web-sites where I can frequently be found keep a note of particularly fine postings, with a view to having a Post Of The Year (PotY) Award at Xmas. I hereby (1) propose the creation of said PotY Award, (2) suggest that a Moderator immediately volunteer for the task of keeping a file running, and (3) nominate the above post for this year's award. 18.
By way of comparison, here is Free doing the same track: FreeAlrightNow Even this is a slight departure from the original, but certainly in the same spirit as far as I'm concerned.
Excellent film, that. I think Free's capability to "do it like the record" was largely dependant on Kossof's prevailing blood/chemical ratio...
 19.
I knew Hendrix would be brought up (I nearly mentioned it in my original comments), but the Bay City Rollers , it's pretty sad you have to bring that garbage into the discussion. I'm suprised someone who contributes to this site has pictures of them, my little sister used to have posters of them on her bedroom wall in the seventies.
Ha ha... Nice one. I'm going to assume you are trolling as someone playing a right handed instrument upside down has little relevance to this, or my ability to type "bay city rollers" into a google image search .......
 20.
Seeing as you mention that particular track, I have to agree that's one where the bass player MUST stick to the original bass line, especially beneath the guitar solo. That has to be one of the best-known and best-loved bass riffs in history, and every time I hear that song played without the matching bass riff it just sounds pants.
Ah yes .. There are exceptions and that is clearly one. I was most disappointed to hear the Paul Rogers/Queen combo do All Right Now (and various other Free/Bad Co numbers) with the "wrong" drum parts, especially the bass drum. It is so inextricably linked with the rhythm of the vocal, bass and guitar that playing it differently just wrecked the whole track for me. Judge for yourself http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7x9M3ZuPFDc...feature=related
I have a Peavey 210TX cabinet for sale on this board (£90) that has been used, on its own, with either a Peavey TMAX (350W) [...] head, neither of which was ever cranked above 3/10. Always perfectly loud and clear (with appropriate EQ) with a very loud drummer, guitarist, and vocalist.
Snap it up .... I played (sax) in a band with a bass player using the Peavey TMAX and the 210TX. He had the 15 as well but never needed it or took it to gigs. Never ever had a problem hearing him (even with 14 people in the band)
 22.
I believe the songs should be played as close to the original as possible or don't bother at all.
Good luck with that I used to but I remember quite distinctly the day I realised that no one in the room but me noticed or gave a toot. That's when I started added integrity to playing covers. I was playing my version.
I spotted a bass player in an originals band a fortnight ago playing a right handed bass upside down, for f*cks sake, just buy a proper left handed one and get on with it.
Yeah .. What did this bloke know anyway? and the guy in the Bay City Rollers Muppets ...
 23.
But the evidence suggests that, if these things take off, they will clog up the venues (e.g. the Railway in Ipswich, Spa Pavillion in Felixstowe) and replace anyone trying to do anything creative or new (like 'classical' composers or contemporary jazz musicians). Turns the whole world into cabaret!
Ah that old chestnut.... Bilbo, you speak a lot of sense which I agree with but ... If you don't entertain, you don't get an audience.. and, of course, the corollary, if you don't pull an audience, you are probably not entertaining (or you are keeping your gigs a secret) You have to to earn your right to play a gig in a popuar venue and then displace the million other things that your audience could be doing. Tribute bands are perfectly valid, they tend to pull in audiences to live music who may not have bothered before. 1% of that new audience may then discover Jazz so be grateful ... They don't stop you getting that gig. Pull as large an audience in the same venue and you'll get the gig. It's economics. In fact a healthy crowd watching a trib, party or covers band every Friday or Saturday night may well keep the venue going through the week when your jazz band can get a go to play to a smaller audience. You have to be realistic though. The audience for your creative noodlings from within your very soul is a lot more limited than that for a Pink Floyd tribute band, or even someone playing Mustang Sally and Lady In Red ...
 24. Charlie Parker played covers ..... Yehudi Menuhin played covers John Lennon played covers Frank Zappa played covers Nothing wrong with playing covers. Back to the OP Yes, learn those covers, at least to "get away with it" level. It will broaden yorupalette and, maybe, put a few quid in your pocket some day.
 25.
Classic Pino line though. A chance to use an Octaver in anger is never to be sneezed at!!
Damn damn damn damn! I've spent so many decades hating Lady in Red and I've just listened to the bass line properly and, as OHM says, it's a Pino cracker. Thanks OHM ... Now where do I get a version without the vocal or the vision of CDB's sincere eyebrows each time I hear it?
