1.
Congrats mate. Im thinking of a similar set up with a Bassbone to do the switching and the seperate EQ on the Stagg. Untill then, Im going to use an EQ pedal in the chain. and just change the lead over. Do you leave it plugged in and if so is the battery good enough to last?
I pull the lead out each time just in case
 2.
Wow that is very red
Odd the text didn't show in my previous post ...
 3.
And this is mine[attachment=8772:Stagg8.JPG
Wow that is very red
 4. Annual playground fundraiser at our home village in Wilts. Our families in attendance which is always nice and a nice band social afternoon wandering around teh village looking at the scarecrows and Morris dancers ... Great village hall with an expandable "box" stage and some surviving stage lights ... only two with gels though I fell over the steps during teh stage build though, and broke a bit of the stage I was OK though ... First gig with both our regular guitarist (Dave) and his regular deputy (Dai) on keys, guitar and mandolin. It's the Double D sized Big Band! Dai's been asked to join which is more a case of both of them playing when they are both available for the same gig. Hopefully that will be more often once we start getting first in their respective diaries. Multi band players eh? A busy afternoon with the families and scarecrows and late start setting up meant a bit of a rush and trouble with the sound. Not helped by the drummer leaving all of the PA leads at home - He was still celebrating Portsmouth's win when he packed his car. Hurrrrumph. I waved my Cardiff city flag a bit even though .... A quick zoom off brought back a different bag of leads from local source and pair of , er, not exactly brilliant, FOH speakers Note to self: get some jack to Speakon converters and pack them separately ..... As a result the FOH sound lacked a good deal of clarity - tricky when calling dances .. However we and the plucky crowd coped. I was debuing my new brace of Begatino 1x12 cabs (superb), my Stagg upright ("The Babe Magnet") a couple of pedals and a MDF rack to hold amp head, wireless and percussion box ... Oh and a new bass playing hat .... A fairly steep learning curve ensued but it all worked really well.. once I'd remembered to turn the amp master volume up from zero... So what with that and suddenly having an extra bloke playing chords and things on guitar, mandolin and keys I found I had to change what I normally play to give him some room ... That lets me sit back a bit and concentrate on the groove rather than adding in the bling elements ... We had a few punters checking us out for their weddings next year who left smiling, even though we picked on them a bit and sang Shotgun Wedding for the ones with the kids The organiser jumped up and played one number with us too - that kept him happy Great stuff and one of those nights when you know why you do it
 5.
Thanks OG a very kind offer I may just invest myself but will come back to you on that. Are you going to re-cut the nut by feel or set to a specific height? I was thinking about the glow in the dark jobs as the memory of playing fretless on a dark stage has faded a lot but not enough to forget the blind panic of not knowing what the heck you are playing. Intonation of the upper strings has always been a challenge for me at the dusty end - it is surprising how much harder an unmarked 5 string fretless is to play than an umarked 4, something to do with the acres of featureless black fretboard! I have no idea how anyone can contemplate a 6 string fretless. The position of the 7th fret marker looks wrong but also my ear also tells me that the intonation is a bit flat at the 7th fret (my ear is not that good for these things). I am sure I shoudl be able to work this out from first principles but I think my brain might implode!
I've been playing with my chromatic tuner in the line to check my ear and positioning. That helps. Gig was fab .. Only played the Stag for three tunes - two folky tunes and These boots as an encore .... Again the reaction from people was notable and the band have now christened it the totty magnet as it does seem to have that effect ... They're also claiming I'm compensating for something as well as it's very long ..... Fortunately as a bass player I'm too stupid to understand that ... However a little warning .. I managed to pull the lead out by standing on it so I have to address that problem, preferably by being able to switch my wireless over ... I have an AB input switch so I just piped it through all my effects and stuff that I normally use for the EBG ... Voodoo Chile intro with fuzz and wah wah came out rather well and, of course, scored very high on the incongruity meter - "folk" band, on bass and on an upright bass at that.. .. I like that in a tune .. I didn't risk playing an entire set dance on the Stagg as that can go on for a long time and I'm not sure the muscles are up to it yet but a very successful start. OG
 6. My stand pics are here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=177631 It's hanging from the stand's grabber head using the side prong. The pin does not touch the ground You need to set the height of the stand so the pin does not touch the floor. That's key so it has no pivot point. If it is resting on the floor and leaning on the stand the high centre of gravity will push it over. I used this on stage for a normal gig last night - a stage made up of boxes with some movement during lively bits .. It was fine.
 7.
Some great progress on the playing front from the sound of it. I am going to do some work on the nut of my bass to improve the action I just want to get a feeler gauges first, in the past I have always just used, ...er .... feel ut want to do it properly this time. Just a quick question the dot markers on my neck seem to be a bit er.... random I think they are mostly OK but the 7th 'fret' marker (326 mm from nut) seems to be where I thought the 6th fret might be. I am used to playing fretless so I am not too phased by the lack of frets but this seems to be just 'wrong' anyone or is there something I am just not getting else got this issue. If it is wrong any ideas on 'moving it'?
Not sure about the wrong place but I've got some stick-on GlowDotz from another project. I'm putting a few on the off side of the fret-,er, finger-bord so I can find the E and octave on the G string when I'm mwaaaah-ing up the top .. You are welcome to a couple. PM me your address. They don't glow all the time. They just look like large white side-marker dots. They are a bit raised but nothing drastic. I hardly notice the feel of them on the EBG I've got them on.
 8.
Great to hear that you're getting on with your bass, Simon. Although, I do worry that you might be getting a bit too friendly, as judging by your last post you're obviously on ecstasy. --- I'm going to email Zings again. It's nearing that time of the month.
Ecstasy? Nah mate Just having fun. Our band is a tad different as we play more or less anything during an evening, some planned things for set dances - eg we morph Cock of the North into Paint in Black during a dance (it's a barn dance band) and some as a result of witty heckling .. Stairway and Smoke are regular requests from punters who think people playing mostly folk type stuff never listen to anything else ... Doh! We also play the unannounced "spot the bass line" game where I'll drop in a few bars of something like peaches, Walk in the wild side, the chain, money etc and the ones sober enough to catch on then start yelling things out .. So if I have the Stagg in my hand I'll play them on that ... However Rolf Harris' version of smoke on the water is a possible for the DB treatment ... and of course there's his stairway too ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy5KjaAS7nY Voodoo Chile may be a tad more challenging and the Stagg through my effects chain will be interesting too .. Not sure I can stand up, hold the upright bass upright and do the wah wah at the same time We will see
 9. Had my DB lesson .. My technique's Ok (amazingly), the bass needs its nut lowered a few mm to stop some horrible noises in half an first position (see got the terminology too ) and the he suggested raising the action to get a better DB sound .. It's not bad as it is, that was just a "could be better" suggestion ... He bowed it and declared the bridge arc not really enough as he was finding it hard to avoid playing two strings when he "dug in" (or whatever) with the bow. It actually bowed OK apart from that though. So I covered postioning, playing high and low, using open strings as much as pos, vibrato, holdingt the thing to free up my left hand to move and play rather than support, plucking and bowing... Not bad in an hour Had to drag him back from geting me to play two octave scales in the lesson I'll do that stuff in my own time and go back fo rthat when I'm happier with teh whole instrument.. Cool, I'm heading down the right road.. now I just have to practice it more anand bulid a few callouses .... Got it's first proper gig with my band tomorrow. Just plannng "These Boots ..." and "Hit the road jack" for the first outing ... May slip in Smoke on the water and Peaches too though
 10.
I wanted it more contoured than usual, and to be slightly bigger where my forearm sometimes rests on the body.
Ah yes My one this shape has that too ... good idea.
 11.
LOL, you guys need to get out more.
Well if that's you in your avatar you probably know all these shows and the bass lines the Dallas theme has some funky "flat wounds with pick" sounds .. Chris Evans keeps playing it as a jingle
 12.
Yeah definitely the ghost notes lilt the bassline. I found this video helpful to learn from: Rio Its loads of fun to play
Oh that guy's great. He shows how to play loads of different classic bass lines .. As an aside the Rio vid brings up asociated vids of John Taylor's bass solo bits from DD in concert with the audience yelling "Play that f;;;;;; bass John" great stuff. Wouldn't it be nice if every crowd appreciated the bass player that much? (yeah I know, dream on) .. Mind you in one he's playing the 25 or 6 to 4 riff from Chicago
 13.
They haven't leaked oil since 1991, and neither has my Warwick.
They probably both need some oil then
 14.
The Claude! Haven't been in there in a few years....
It's not bad sometimes too loud for me but they have a great Pinball machine out back I sometimes get to play at the Jim Jam there on Thursdays ..
 15. Still looking at this and I just noticed it's not a new technique Here's Jack Bruce with Cream in the 60's .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l16jlallBMs...feature=related

 21.
LOL, yeah. I didn't even mention the lack of power sockets. For where we were, there was only one pair of sockets in the floor and another pair under the raised shelf that ran around the periphery of the floor area. Certainly wasn't a building designed for big functions. Actually, Sir Norm's practice has its critics. I don't think I'd be happy working there. Speaking of which, I have a new job any way. Woooo!
Woooo indeed! It is in a Local Shop, perchance?
 22.
Wedding party of a surprisingly diverse range of ages. We had a request to play River Deep again from the grandfather of the bride so we obliged. The best man told a story that the groom was a huge Michael Jackson fan had actually ran through Madison Square Garden on their stag night dressed up like Michael Jackson complete with rubber face mask! The more that the bride and groom got into it, the more everyone else did as well. Thats happened at quite a few gigs so we might note that for situations in the future where the punters are a little reluctant to get on the dancefloor. Apparently we're only the second band to ever play here.
Dear Sir Norman, Please have a band on your design consultancy panel for buildings that will be used for gigs. Thanks CK PS gissa job
 23. I get to half watch/listen to quite a bit of kids' telly .. I've noticed there's some really good bass playing on some of it. Arthur the Aardvark has Ziggy Marley doing the really good theme tune and some sparkling bass oriented incidental music. No idea who it is, of course, as the credits go too fast to read Everyone Hates Chris has a sound track by Marcus Miller... Any others?
 24.
I want some of what jakesbass is on
Plays an upright eh? Probably jazzcakes then
 25.
Cheers OG would love it but I am sure you will have a buyer in that big ol que I see.
Some have dropped out due to my dithering
