2. Hi Bob , Plenty of music in Cardiff. Here's a list of shops. Some have musicans wanted and available boards http://www.accessplace.com/music-shop/sout...gan/cardiff.htm Gamlins and Cranes probably have the most "traffic" but Nobles is nicer and has a bigger notice board. Cardiff guitars is great too. Take a post card sized advert with you for any of them. Then try an add on Cardiff Gumtree and the free ads paper. There's a bunch of jam sessions over my side (Roath) of varying quality where there's loads of musicians who know loads of musicians, loads of bass players too ... That's a start..
 3. Aldi's got a gas soldering kit at £15 from 12th October http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/2867_...008-10-10-11-44 probably Ok
 4.
Did you see Old Gits thread? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=29328
Long way from Peterborough, Jase I'd say you approach your local venues where other bands already play 70's big flairs/big hair guitar hero rock and get a Monday or a support slot. Then progress from there. Play that place once every 6 months or so and then go to th next town's venues where bands already play 70's big flairs/big hair guitar hero rock and say "we played[name of venue] in [name of town] and rocked it, can we have a gig at your place please. Repeat 'til you have as many gigs as you want. Don't try to play in the same town more than once every 3 months or so as even the most die hard fans of Free won't want to shell out to see you more than that. If you do the clothes and wigs you may get some 70's night party gigs via tribute band agents ... but in general that kind of audience would be more interested in what their mates are wearing than our musically perfect reproductions of Free tunes .. The money's good though ... Don't bother with a website, do a good Myspace. Free and easy and it has the fan building communication links already built in for things like announcing gigs to followers etc. (unless you are selling your act to agents or direct to party and function band organisers, Then do a brilliantly fabulous 70's style hippy website, man.) A few thoughts.... Single band tribute gigs are a limited market. Mostly because they only have a few hits and well known tunes. The people into that stuff back then (ie my age) generally don't get off their bums and got to gigs so you are dependant on filling a pub on a regular basis with younger people who may like that historical stuff ... Bit risky, I'd say. Most people into big flairs/big hair 70's guitar hero rock will enjoy Alright Now, Wishing Well, Bad Company, Can't Get Enough, The Hunter and even Mr Big on a good night but a whole 2 x 45 set, hour and half of Free/Bad Co may be stretching it a bit. They didn't have that many hits and even Queen with Paul Rogers don't to more than about 7 of the Free/Bad Co greatest hits ... Why not spread the interest a bit (as you are not a lookalike tribute band) and do a first set of other stuff in the genre and period - Hendrix, Cream, Gary Moore, Thin Lizzie, Boston, Bowie, Eagles, Who .. etc and then a second set of the best of Free .. That might work well and would be a lot easier to sell to pub bookers and punters alike. "70's guitar hero night" Meanwhile google tells me that there's a venue called The Club With No Name near you that does rock http://www.redambergreen.btinternet.co.uk/home.htm and The Park (get a support gig for a big name?) Good luck anyway ..
 5.
Who are Free?
ha ha You are a stirring person, I believe ...
 6. Ha ha this sounds like my lad when he gets his birthday money .... Actually it sounds like me a few years ago The result? Some fixed teeth and my Shuker P5 ... Get a custom, you'll probably never have the spare cash again ...... or pop it in the bank, I hear they are doing really well right now
 7.
I've found that my covers band's getting more bookings than ever...we're a dirt-cheap pub rock covers band who do 3-4hrs for a small fee, and we always get the Newbury live music crowd into whichever place we playing, and they drink the place dry. There's practically NUTHIN to do in Newbs, and altho we're far from the tightest band in town, we do always manage to give everyone a good evening. I think we're seen as a sure-fire way to get 60-100 (dep on venue) punters in, drinking and spending money, so it's pretty good business sense in that aspect. On the flip side, the Originals band is a risky venture, cos we can't promise to fill a pub...so I can see why they don't wanna fork over some readies for us to play at an empty venue.
That's not changed .. fill a pub with a good show, get booked back; play originals (with that normal attitude originals bands seem to have), draw 20 people, no booked back... It's always been better to book a covers band if you want to sell beer and stay in business, even more so right now ..
 8. Even allowring for the pre play adrenaline brain melt that's very bad manners ... Specially if they don't pull a crowd .. Did you send it?
 9.
Here in the U.S. they usually sell between $549 and $599. Quite a steal in my opinion.
About the same then ... Certainly worth the money.
 10.
Don't know - I quite enjoyed that, actually.
I can't believe Pete is still angry anough to do it for real ... (unless he'd just got out of court ...) so that was juts a sad old man re-living his youth, for me ..
 11. Axes R Us is listed as a dealer but seems to have them under ARTEC ..
 12.
I've bought a Fender Japan Jazz 62ri body but it doesn't have a scratchplate. I remember reading somewhere that the holes will only line up with a Japanese scratchplate. Is that true? Anyone know where I can get one? Ishibashi want £34 for an Allparts one shipped... I'm looking for an off white/parchment
Geek99 has one - it's attached to the 62 RI Jazz I just sold him but he's planning a refinsh so the plate my be changing ...
 13.
That could possibly be the lamest thing I have ever seen.
This one is sadder
 14.
Cool, can only be a good thing. We're playing The Point tomorrow night, it's a great venue but they've got real neighbour problems... I hope this new place fares a bit better. What?? Go to the bottom of the class
or at least Google ... "The Globe" was a fleapit cinema notorious for a more "interactive" experience than perhaps people wanted from thier films ... That was demolished and a nice little shopping thing put up with a nice litte art house cinema. That either never opened of only opened for a short while. This venture in in that space. Should be good and anice addition to the med capacity venues ..
 15. Bloke playing a Dano on Jooools on Tuesday (and Friday too I guess) Sounded nice, as far as I could tell..
 16. Lucky me! A new 350 capacity venue is opening a stone's throw from my front door "Promoter Alan Jones is opening a new live music venue in Cardiff next month - the Globe (capacity 350) is based in the former cinema of that name in Albany Road, Roath. [very close to the Claude if you know the venues in the area] It'll offer all genres of live music including jazz, blues and world music - [snip] it would suit bands that attract a good crowd at Cafe Jazz but would like more room for the audience to dance, plus visiting artists who aren't quite big enough to fill a 500-capacity venue like the Point. If you're interested in playing there, call Alan Jones on 07973 715875 or email [email protected] " I look forward to seeing loads of you Cardiff and area basschatters playing headline and support gigs there .. just kep it down when you are loading out, ok?
 17.
Not that thieves would know a Squier from a pre-CBS...
My pre-CBS was nicked to order, I'm sure. I agree that the average community recycler doesn't know a really valuable bass from a normal one but some people do...
 18.
I hate it when people make statements like this. How have you quantified that it is the best? For what type of music, using which amps, preamps, bass...?
... fingers, ears... +1
 19. Jam night. I whizzed out at 10pm to celebrate some good news.. Got to the venue in time for the last 4 tunes from the house band and guests then got called up to play bass for the jammers ... It's an anything goes jam so you never know who will be getting up or what they will do .. a regular even does The Lion Sleeps Tonight with two lion puppets on her hands and totally tuneless singing It's always fun though. So 45 mins jammin' on my Shuker Precision 5 through an ancient TE head and 1x15 cab (on the floor .. I've lost count of the number of times I've explained why it's really much better for jammin' bass to have the cab up on a crate or two. I just can't hear it when it's on the floor but sadly my pleas to the house bassist fall on closed ears ... ) Took about 3 numbers to get the eq right so I had at least some chance of hearing me and the singers and guitar amp , essential when trying to follow people who give you very few clues as to what they are playing or where their version is going. So .. about 5 singers or singer/guitarists of varying ability and time keeping and three drummers during that time too One thing inexperienced (or drunk) jammin' singer guitarists tend to do is to get very nervous and just start without telling me what the tune is and what key it's in ... Then they hide their chording hand so I have to guess what they are doing from the back view of their left hand ... They think I'm telepathic or I know every song every written and the key it's in on the particular recorded version they learned. So mostly it was Ok but one guy played Taxman which I know well so I piled in in A, as that was the key I was told it was in by someone who should know better, only to realise half way through the verse that the little weak vocal and guitar I could barely hear from the other side of the drums was actually in D ... der .. fast key change Someone got up and called Wild World .. "Reggae version?" I asked. "eh??" he said, obviously never heard of Jimmy Cliff But I got my revenge.. next person up sang Knocking on heaven's door - we play that in our band with a combination of the original, a big reggae dub and bit of the Gums and Noses version so that's what they got The drummer joined in with the groove and it went great. Rounded off my stint with one of the better showman singers doing Sweet Home Chicago and Peaches... P sound to the fore there I even got some compliments and an offer of dep out of it .. Result!
 20. We've had one birthday party gig cancelled due to the recession but we got another for the same date. Other than that our costs have risen (due to the increase in travel costs) and we've not been able to pass that on to the gigs we've already got in the book (going out as far as October next year) but we are adding a slight increase in the fees to cover it. No complaints so far. people may spend less on a night out to compensate for travel costs but people do tend to spend on leisure in a recession because they get down and need cheering up. I think the new X factor series is likely to have a bigger effect on Saturday night pub audience numbers ...
 21. Oh bu663r.. missed this completely ... How do I get notified of competitions like this?
 22.
I dont get that
He comes from where I live ...... It's your normal sheep joke. "I Started Out With Nothin and i Still Got Most of it Left" great stuff! That C60 (as I thought he was called for ages) is a natural star.
 23.
yup, parcelforce wont insure unless the instrument is in a hardcase and in another box too, and even then its £150 max
Sorry to be pedantic but that's not quite how it is ... Parcel Force will cover your bass for up to £150 if it's not in a case but only if it is in a box and Very Well Wrapped. What the small print says about cases is that if the bass is in a case, but the case is not in another box and Very Well Wrapped, the case counted as wrapping and is thus not insured. The bass is still insured (but only up to £150) So for both bass and case to be covered, the whole lot needs to be very well wrapped and inside an exterior box. You can see how they squiggle out of paying claims ....
 24.
I could - in fact I'd be right tempted - if I hadn't somehow managed to acquire an 80s Squier SQ series P, a 70s Ibanez P clone and a bizarre acrylic transparent P project - which is what I want a black block neck for! Too many P's already! Plus if I bought it I know bloody well I wouldn't split it! Good luck selling, if you change your mind let me know. J.
ha ha Well you could just neck swap and sell the other one on as a working bass ... Ok you can have the neck - for £140 Sorry
