They claim you can get 100dB+ sensitivity and strong response below 40Hz out of a compact 12"! Not all manufacturers claim valves are for dirt - I don't believe SWR or Eden ever have. Or Alembic, or Demeter, or... Alex
Ok Thanks Alex ..:
 2. What? Remove all that fab mojo? Oh well ... Jon Shuker will do it for you. Brilliant job (you should see my P5) but probably a bit of a wait .. Is S. Yorkshire in the Midlands?
 3.
Why does everyone assume that the reason a valve is in a preamp is to provide some measure of dirt? The Dual Showman / Alembic / Hartke topology uses the valve as a high impedance, high headroom and low distortion input buffer and then as a low distortion output gain. It is not designed to get you distortion, dirt, overdrive, etc. It is solely there to provide a clean fat sound, much like valves are sometimes used in high-end hi-fi.
Could it be that for years we've been told that by amp manufacturers?
 4.
Chill out. I meant you made a humourous post and it failed. And yes, actually, I do know who Carole Kiegh is...
I don't ...

 6.
Another block lover. I have recently realised that I have a huge weakness for block pearl inlays. They are like the eyes of a beautiful woman, to me! I hope Kiwi's new builds don't have blocks, or I'll have to pawn my CD collection and buy one.
I'll do you a nice deal on some lovely black block inlays ... I'll throw in the rest of the bargain bass too

 10.
These are very neutral and hifi sounding, right?
Mine are like that with my MB head .. I add a bit of effects grit when requied. +1 on a visit to Bass Direct. There's nothing quite like trying stuff in that environment - just you, a studio, your bass, amp, current cab, cables, whatever. and the stuff you want to try. No slappin and shredding oiks or pushy sales people ... Mark's a great bloke with loads of experience who puts no pressure on at all. There's a couple on Bergantino AE12's for sale here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=28703 Tom Bowlus did a 1x12 shoot out in 2006, so not exacly contemporary, informative though http://bowlusblog.blogspot.com/2006/05/1x12-shootout.html You might look at a Schroeder 1212L, its a 2x12 but small and light (for a 2x12 that is) Plenty of mid

 14.
Thanks for the comments folks. I'll start shopping around for a better deal starting with Allianz Cornhill and the MU. Cheers Darren PS. About a 1/3 of the cost for Musicguard is for the public liability, the quote from Allianz Cornhill is £83 but no Public Liability so they're about the same.
Be aware: If you are after Public Liability Insurance for a band be aware that some policies are band specific - so if you, say, take you PA and lights out to do another band's gig and the venue demands PLI (as some do these days) they may reject it if it's not the band named on the policy. We had that experience. A nice quiet night ensued. Some venues just won't let you play without PLI as they don't want the drunk who hurts himself by stumbeling into your PA speaker and knocking it onto his own head to sue them, they'd rather pass the buck to you, even though they supplied the alcohol which was the "proximate cause" ...

 20.
£145 for £3000 of cover I have x6 that level of cover for my basses PLUS all of my assorted music amplification, a couple of guitars, 1 bass insured for £2200 away from the home AND all of my contents up to £40k for about the same premium... Liverpool Victoria through Frizzell. Maybe I'm missing something but my insurers seem happy to cover and all I had to do was get a music shop to give me a written quotation for my basses to be replaced new for old. However (touch wood), I've never made a claim in 20+ years of having insurance.
WarwickH, does that cover you for gigging? +1 for alianz.. They rebuilt my big sax twice after on stage incidents.
