I would say though that Musicman was a big part of the look and sound of the '80s with pop groups like Kajagoogoo and Sade.
Throw in a Super Mario and some gold coins and you have a game.
Reminds me of some Macca lines where he too would improvise his way through a track keeping it fluid.

There is a Fender jazz body on ebay just now with a fitted Squier VM all-maple neck.
You could perhaps replace the bridge with the type you get on a beatles bass which is moveable and height adjustable.
Depends how attached you are to the bass.
Could buy a better one 2nd hand.

Both charge around £60 for a basic setup.
I started doing mine myself after never really being happy with the results from a workshop.
You could try either cutting grooves in the existing saddle to lower string height or sanding it it down a bit. If you go too far just a shims to raise height back up.
