Hughes & Kettner BASSFORCE XL 200 Watt Bass Combo Amp
Truckstop replied to steve-soar's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I might supposit that perhaps he's not being entirely serious? Also, cracking combo, only at £50 at the moment! If someone ends up paying less than £250 then they've got a bargain! Truckstop -
Those modern player jazz basses...what are they like?
Truckstop replied to Billy Dowdall's topic in Bass Guitars
You should look at the Yamaha BB425x. Around £400 new or you could get the BB1025x (the next model up - better pups, better materials etc) second hand. P/J config and ultra-versatile. I used to be a Fender fanboy and got my head turned by the new BB's. Great quality basses! More usefully perhaps I found the MP basses to be more or less exactly the same quality as the MIM basses. I have owned a 5 string jazz from both ranges. I preferred the tone of the MP but for some reason found the MIM more comfy to play. Truckstop -

Nile Rodgers at Hyde Park - embarrassing
Truckstop replied to Jah Wibble's topic in General Discussion
Funny because Nile was being interviewed on some sunday morning show yesterday and he said that at his Guildford show the previous evening they'd forgot to put mics in the stands on stage!! No vocal mics! He said he was opening with Let's Dance, played the intro, stepped up to the microphone, and....no mic! Truckstop -
No alcohol during Cruise Ship work at all? Is this the norm?
Truckstop replied to coffee_king's topic in General Discussion
Id actually prefer a gig where I wasn't allowed to drink! Gives me an excuse to turn a drink down. I am not a fan of drinking at all and I hate it when people buy me one because then I'm expected to drink it! Truckstop -
That's interesting because I would happily deal with a larger neck if it meant I was happy with the sound. Why have a bass that doesn't have the sound you want for the sake of a comfier neck? Truckstop

Yes sorry, re-read your question and adjusted to suit! I'll expand: I'm not keen on J's anymore. I never used the bridge pickup solo'd. I'd blend it with the bridge pup just to add a little weight to the sound. I love the burp you get from a well placed bridge pick up but I missed the weight that I like in my tone. I like P pups because of the thump and the texture you get. It's a lovely sound that seems to suit the band mix and especially for the sort of music I play these days it's perfect. However, sometimes I prefer a little more growl in my tone if I'm solo'ing or playing with a quartet or quintet so I push through a little more. So for me a PJ is the best of both worlds. I have P all the time and I blend a touch of bridge if I need to. And sometimes if I'm jamming at home I'll go 100% bridge for ultra-funk! Truckstop

PJ's. Thump and grit! Truckstop

I've been playing bass for 12 years and only in the last couple of years have I developed a satisfactory muting technique while playing fingerstyle. Admittedly muting's never been a technique that I've always wanted to learn, but I've alway mucked about with it. I think that muting is a technique that comes naturally after you've really spent a lot of time mastering your instrument. It's sort of like that unquantifiable 'soul' that a lot of musicians develop over many years. Anyway, my way is I damp the strings near the bridge using the palm of my hand and then use my thumb and my first finger to pluck the strings. To do it, I've really worked on my thumb technique to achieve the consistency and power that I'm capable of with my usual three-finger style. Truckstop

Oh good, I've got a couple of spare Quiklok mic stands that'll do the job just fine! Truckstop

This is a tremendous project! If you don't mind my asking, how much did you spend on the walnut facing? Truckstop

Sweeeeeet! Truckstop

They all sound exactly the same to me. The pickups and strings will give you the sound that you want! Truckstop

The keyboardist in an old band of mine used a powered 12" Mackie monitor and it coped just fine. He had a small stand to keep it at head height and was very happy indeed. Truckstop

God, so hot last night! Sweaty Betty or what! Anyway, gig was good. For the first set and a half we were met with polite applause and a couple of people tapping their feet and then suddenly the pub filled up with loads of young people and the joint was rocking! Did 4 encores and had to finally stop at 12.30 when the plug was pulled (metaphorically speaking!). Enjoying my tone at the moment too. Have been fiddling with my settings for a while and I think I'm just about happy with it all. P/J 50/50 blend on the pups, flat EQ on the combos with the bass turned down an 8th and the aural enhancers on 10 o'clock. Plenty of meat, slight mid bump and crisp treble too. Gigs are picking up too. We got 7 bookings off the back of this weekends shows and it's starting to look like we're working 3 nights a week for the rest of the summer! Hopefully we'll be able to command big bucks for Xmas and New Years and start looking at festivals for next summer too. Truckstop

How does it mount on? Is it like a clamp or a screw-on-to-the-top of a mic stand type job? If it's a clamp it'd be well handy to attach to the speaker poles of the FOH PA. Truckstop

Well, it's a bit of a toughie. I've somehow ended up in a band fulltime (2/3 gigs a week) and I'm loving it. We're a blues and rock n roll quartet and we dont play anyting past 1960. Tonight we played with a dep guitarist and now I'm all confused. The usual guitarist is awesome; knows all the chords, solos beautifully and has a real pro touch to the music we play. He's a very pretty and intelligent player. He also spends ages getting the effects right for each song and has loads of really expensive and rare vintage effects and all that kind of stuff. We're lucky to have him. The dep guitarist is, for all intents and purposes, not as good but yet I found myself having so much more fun and I felt so much more comfortable playing with the guy. He had a great sense of fun and rhythm that the usual guitarist seems to lack. His solos are over the top, he powers through the songs and generally has more balls. I like that he literally just turns up with an amp under his arm and a guitar bag. He uses just a Boss ME-20 and an amp and he's ready to go. Obviously I'm not saying that I think we should sack the original and get the dep involved, I'm just confused that I prefer the playing of a technically inferior guitarist! Go figure! Truckstop

Ooh nice! Ar you going to be able to cope with those frets? Truckstop

Thomann own-brand bags are awesome. I have two of the faux-leatherette one's and they're tremendous quality and look bangin'. Sub £20 and they're good bits of kit. To make the postage worth it, it's a good time to nab some stuff that you've been meaning to get like stands, strings, cleaning materials and cables. Truckstop

Where's Markus Muller when you need him? Truckstop

Best to leave it in a case or good quality gigbag when you're not using it and left somewhere cool. I leave mine cased under my bed when not in use. Tweak out the current issues with the intonation and then take measures to keep the bass in ideal conditions as much as possible! Truckstop
