Hard indeed. In no particular order: 3 Mustaphas 3, 'Aj Zajdi Zajdi Jasno Sonce'. https://www.youtube....h?v=Yl9-8RudQXk This will be played at my funeral. It's the harmony which does it. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, 'I See A Darkness'. https://www.youtube....h?v=LAriDxTeed8 Though I could have found at least five songs from Will Oldham's back catalogue. The Mutton Birds, 'White Valiant'. https://www.youtube....h?v=UqFoRIj0Wzc Cold, spare, deeply creepy. I might have gone for 'While You Sleep' instead, but this fits my mood. Devo, 'Satisfaction'. https://www.youtube....h?v=jadvt7CbH1o Just to remind me what a cover version can be. Talking Heads, 'Memories Can't Wait'. https://www.youtube....h?v=VJu-IABeCws Another compromise. The vocal, again. Polysics' brutal cover of 'My Sharona'. https://www.youtube....h?v=k6NIJ5r448A This performance, with video, please. A bit like the Devo; artful, skilful, takes the original and does violence to it and comes out with something sublime. The Weavers, 'Sinnerman'. https://www.youtube....h?v=rXA2cjPnPJ4 The people who got me interested in music. The Barely Works, 'Byker Hill'. https://www.youtube....h?v=lmQMNEsKdTU Brilliantly done. That's not a bass guitar, either I regret many of the musics I've left out. Books: The Bible would need to be a King James, for the language. I think I might take Russell Hoban's 'Riddley Walker'. If you've not read it, treat yourself. And a luxury. It would have to be a piano. Self-tuning In a dozen years or so I might learn to play the thing...

Relic "features"? -
The frets on the J neck I have (on a bitsa) are not exactly blunt...

T-40, I guess.
Nowt about being exempt of polar bears.
True. Anyhow, if I can wash up on a desert island with a bass, so can a polar bear. (Presumably its bass would be Arctic White?)

Natural wood finish on a budget? Advice needed.
alyctes replied to Veganarchist's topic in Repairs and Technical
My call would be to swap it for another in a bearable colour. Or buy another and flog the blue one. There's a black one up for sale for £80 here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/262757-fs-yamaha-rbx270j-in-black-l80/ -
Slimming down a Shergold replacement neck
The bushes are 12mm OD and 10mm ID, the spindles are 10mm right down to the mating surface, so why have the extra counterbore??? Who knows...
Neck dive? -
USA Peavey Foundation Fretless
alyctes replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I think £150 is about right. I also think that the market undervalues them at that price. I'd guess this one probably hasn't sold because the seller has described dings but not provided pics; that would certainly put me off. -
Can't help, but I would definitely like to know if their J necks fit their P bodies
-
The bridge is definitely too gaudy for my taste.
-
Don't know (no surprise . The headstock is vaguely Peavey-ish, but the big scratchplate? Don't know.
-
Can't stand them... their only saving grace is that you can lean them against things and they don't fall over. Very tricky to play sitting down.

Nut looks too wide for me. Nice colour, pups look pretty. I hope it doesn't come with that hard case though

I have far too many basses. I didn't get where I am today by being a 5...! </CJ>

Oh crap, I think I might be a drummer after all
alyctes replied to mrtcat's topic in General Discussion
I might be a drummer too, but there's even less love for them than for bass players in my street. Also, my drumming role model would be Mo Tucker -
... Although similar in some aspects, playing bass and playing guitar are two different skills. There is a common factor: both require practise in order to improve. 'Little and often' is the usual advice; short but regular is much better than long stints too far apart. It is recommended to have at least a couple of lessons from a competent bass teacher; this will get you going on the right track from the very outset. Patience is a good quality to have, too, preferably in bucket-loads. Lastly, don't listen to 'people', listen instead, firstly to yourself, then those who know and want you to get on. This, in any domain. Good luck with your projects; let us know how things progress, please..?
I would add that a competent teacher will also tell you things about ergonomics. These things will save you time and pain in the future.

Nothing wrong with P basses. Perhaps a little expensive for a first bass? Not everyone gets on with the P-bass neck (I don't). You should be able to pick up something very playable for £250-ish, especially if you try the For Sale forum here. Ibanez SR300, Squier P or J basses, Peavey Milestone III would all be decent starters, especially if you buy second-hand from someone who knows their stuff. The Westfields are decent for the money. I hear good things about the new Revelations.

It's a bit pointless, TBH. Nobody will be able to see the pattern from beyond about 20 yards, so why bother?

I have no idea what these go for but surely this is worth a punt... Collect only from Birkenhead, otherwise I might. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hemez-Bass-Guitar-/201353100070?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2ee1947b26
