1. Any idea if he'll be as crap a driving instructor as he is a bassist? I wonder what career path Adam Clayton chooses to take
2. I always found it difficult to get the correct intonation with them, but I can adapt eventually, until I put it down for a few months, pick it up again and I'm back to square one A good way around the sticky feeling to the strings is talcum powder.
3. Yeah I've noticed the whimp bass and toy bass jokes too, although when my 6ft 5 mate plays it, it does look a bit like a toy, but he's happy enough as he can slap on it I've always like the concept of been able to go to a jam night with a lil 1 x 10 or 1x12 combo in one hand and ashbory on my back, and I've gigged with it before now as well. I just love it. I do get some funny looks buying baby powder though!
4. C'mon then, who here's got an Ashbory, and who uses it as more than a gimmick?
5. I reckon he'll still be playing upright on Friday, I spotted it on it's side next to one of his stacks
6. People were definitely trying them. I didn't have a go, and I can't remember why to be honest! If you provide your woods and pups, he'd probably build something, the guys at Wal will although not sure about pups, but with the right money, anything is possible isn't it? If I visit a luthier, I'd want some form of synth access doing. I've got a Roland GK3B, but it doesn't suit and of the basses and it's a bitch to make it look tidy
7. Try Moody Leather over in the states. I've got one and it's fantastic, you completely forget that the bass is there. Mine's plain black with cream stitching and suede underside. Costs about £130 though, that's your down fall. Levy's are always a safe option too!
8.
Hi all - Yes it's me the slapper. Spot on with the comment Goblin, it did become a bit of a slap feast at times. Unfortunately for me as it was my first bass day. I had two tracks pre recorded into Logic to play along to. One track a two hand tapping shuffle type of thing the other a bit of a Funk/Soul number. When I ran them though my little PA you could not hear anything including my bass so had to knock it on the head. In the end all I had available to me was the Mark Bass rig on the stand, I'm an SWR user so it wasn't the best for my bass or my sound. Tried running it through my Miller preamp but the Mark Bass took away the warmth. Tried playing 'Let's Work' (Prince) and 'Power' (Miller) but it just didn't cut through all the other stuff. Tried some percussive slap and it cut through. By the time you came along I was a bit random with what I was playing which is strange for me as I like to keep the "1 in the pocket". What I wanted from the day was to meet other bass players and have a chat and jam. I have suggested to Jon that maybe we should borrow a JamHub for next year (with headphones) so at least you could check out the basses without most of the interference, and we could have a decent jam. If I was to visit with a view to trying out a bass, knowing what the days are like, I would probably take my Korg Pandora along and some in ears headphones. Well I've joined the basschat community now so it would be great to meet up next year. Hannah.
Ahh I was wondering if you were going to be around here. It was good to (sort of) meet you though. I noticed you speaking to Elly, and apparently you were asking about me So was that rack rig at the back yours then? I missed the stuff you were doing at the beginning, as when i found Mancunian Way was closed I had to go down Oxford Road, but every time I go I forget you can't turn left off Portland Street I get what you mean about the MarkBass rig though, it punched fine, but that was about all that impressed me...there's lots out there that punches. No matter which bass I played (blue one, horn fretless and yours) I could tell the amp was holding it back! I also wanted to meet other players and jam as well, although I found it a bit harder than I expected, lots of people kept to themselves! It's a pain when I'm trying to get onto the pro circuit as well, especially considering all the bollocks that's going on with university business at the moment!
9. I play a fretless german Corvette as my daily hack and it's ace. First fretless, had it a good few years now and it's had it's fair share of useage. I'm another one who plays fretted so little I find fretless miles easier and it's just second nature to me! I find lined fretlesses confusing though, it's got to be unlined with an ebony board. Really, my main recommendations are it's got the be solid, with an ebony, unlined fretboard. Depending on the sound you want, there's the obvious difference between active and passive. Mine's passive and has a really dark and smooth sound... it's a bit like a red wine bass. Played an active Shuker this weekend, that was a bit more like a white wine bass...if you catch my drift
10.
Hmm? no idea who this Bernie bloke is but he sounds like a decent chap, does he do finance?
He was the guy on the GB Guitars stand, I spoke to him for quite a bit, seems a nice enough chap! Anyone know what his leather gig bags are like? My Warwick premium line one has a hole in the bottom of it, so I fancy something a bit more plush
11.
Should've come with me a couple of years ago. Drove down to Brighton and back in a day to Bernie's shop. He arranged for a whole raft of amps and cabs for me to try. I was in there 4 hours. Top bloke, makes a mean brew, and gave my bass a free setup too. I came away a very happy man with two Neo cabs, and also now own the GB Spitfire he played through the rig I bought. Well worth the long trip.
Sweet!
12. Right where we up to? My internet crashed so I'm lost now Anna's definitely a good player, no denying that, but it sounded like she was slapping for the hell of and with no real pattern or thought into what she was playing, hence the lackage of feel, thus having a slight affect on the timing, but sod that as I'll end up rambling I was quite guilty for picking up a bass and slapping a bit, but I like to play a lot of riffs, so I apologise to anybody who heard either Money, Love Machine or Superstition played quite iffyly...that would've been me
13. Pretty much, although it's not possible to take every amp there, plus students were still using a lot of the building, but it could definitely work! I've had several recommendations of EBS and I've seen a cab I quite fancy, but before I commit, I'd really have liked to have a go in a nice environment!
14. The seperate room would be a good idea to be honest. I tried the reddish orange Shuker Horn Fretless out, and loved it to bits, but sitting for 5 - 10 minutes with it ain't gunna be enough to make me go "I want to buy this bass". When I bought my current fretless, it was a whim on ebay, german Corvette for £350 and fortunately I love it, but had I looked at other basses of similar quality along with the Warwick in a quiet room with time to play with the settings and the amp setting (other problem with the Shuker was that I don't like MarkBass amps!) I would have most likely gone for something else. First thing I noticed about the Shuker is that as it's active it has a lot more punch, and it's got a thinner neck profile which feels lovely!
15. true, I don't think he minds people taking interest, I mean that's how I met him for starters, but I get the same feeling of "what's everyone thinking" but it washes off. I was sat playing the Marleaux Soprabass at the Promenade Stand, and I kept looking up seeing people watching, and noticed a few cameras poking through too, but sod it, I just wanna see the pics I know what you mean about the girl with boots at the Shuker stand (Anna), the knowledge is there and she can do it, however I felt she had the same problem a lot of the slappers I heard had, and she was lacking feel for what she was playing. Either was she's another one of the really nice people there, and really good to talk to. Her bass plays thernomenally too!
16. Awesome, have fun I'm feeling good for exactly the opposite reason at the moment, it was like working with a bunch of 3 year olds with the talent to match (apart from the drummer who's awesome but spineless), and I got so pi**ed off with it I ended up walking. Sleeping has been so much easier recently!
17.
No he was really like 7 years old! There is nothing wrong with his playing,He could slap me out of the room all day long but like everyone has noticed he does this routine at every bass day and looks around to see who is watching him which looks a little desperate from a distance. And like others have said why not try an actual bass line when trying out a bass? I certainly did on that Classic stingray,Nice it was too!
Just checking, I know I don't look 18 But yeah from my own point of view, as he's a good mate of mine and my teacher too. I met him back in may in PMT, heard him playing and first thing I noticed was that he was never out of time, which is rare with a lot of slap players nowadays, and he's one of the friendliest bassists I've ever met. He also knows his onions too which is handy! With regards to complex stuff, he says he uses stuff like that to cut through the noise, which is fair enough and when he's talking to me about playing with others, he always maintains you've got to keep it as simple as possible and pull the occasional fill to catch someone's ears, and I've heard his band stuff as well which is thernomenal. As for looking around, I always thought he had a tendency to mind his own business, and he said to me on Sunday when we were taking a breather is that he hates looking up and seeing everyone around him, but he just carries on through it. Each to their own I guess, but as I've said, I'm not going to take offence at everyone's opinion of him, plus I haven't been there the last 4 years so haven't witnessed it
18. Ah it was Born 2 Be Mild who I was chatting with!! I knew the name would come to me if I saw it
19.
We said exactly the same thing! He looks around to check if anyone is watching him,He was really pleased when a 7 year old went up to speak to him! Are you out there? If so sorry in advance you can see why I dont tell everyone who I am!
Everyone's out there I bet that 7 year old was me I was the guy who was going round with him quite a bit as well...he's my teacher and more importantly a mate. I'm not taking any offence though, it wasn't my playing
20.
Depends - what were you saying, lol. Of the three on the stand I was the one with very basic square glasses and not as tall as yorks5stringer.
I was probably rambling to be honest We were talking about effects at one point about how we can't see the point in them as they're a pain in the backside to use I was with ChrisDaBass and Funkyspuke drooling over the red Fodera NYC too.
21. Ah was it you who I was speaking to before I had to shoot off, Molan? As soon as I walked off I'd forgotten the username of who I was speaking to - happens a lot
22. I didn't get a chance to try anything with fanned frets but I really wanted too. I'd have probably embarassed myself though The girl on the Shuker stand let me have a go on her own Shuker (that spalted finish one) and I have to say that was epic too!
23.
i think we met briefly, you told me about your Wal? Great day all round ey! i think a lot of people were impressed by that fodera
Yep that was me Small world
