1. I can't take any trades I'm afraid (as nice as that spector sounds!) I think I might be shot if I get another bass at this moment in time Just measured the strings for anyone who might want to know, and they're 125 - 45s
2. Forgot to mention that the last couple of photos show a little bit of damage from where the previous owner looks to have dropped it (the original strap pins were rubbish hence the schallers). It's not as bad as the pics suggest and it's hard to notice unless you look for it
3. Hey guys, basically I've got too many basses and this one's surplus to requirements as I don't play 5 strings anymore. I've used it flat out for gigs and recording sessions over the past couple of years, and general rehersal and practise too, and it's never missed a beat. Only problem I've ever had with it is when I snapped an E string during a gig (no I don't quite know how either! ). It's very playable and easy going on the shoulder too as it's well balanced. Spec wise, it's passive with two humbucking pickups with a 35" scale and 24 fret (2 octave) thru-neck. Woods are a blend of mahoghany, maple and imbuya with a rosewood fretboard, which has been well looked after including a recent wax, and the fretboard and frets cleaned and treated with lemon oil during a recent restring with D'addario strings (I can measure the gauge if anyone wants more info there). It comes with a reasonably solid case (one of those canvas / nylon covered polysteyrene zip up cases), and the strap buttons are also compatible with schaller strap locks. I'm based in Rochdale and looking for £200, and I'll post as well for an additional cost. Pictures are linked below, and if anyone wants to know anything just give me a shout, I'm on here most of the time http://s88.photobucket.com/albums/k195/goblin92/Basses/
4. Best fretless I've ever played is my Warwick Corvette. Just done a gig with it earlier on with brand new strings, and now they've settled it sounds absolutely immense! Feels nice (they're flats), sounds great and the action's just spot on, so it's fast but accurate. My dad used to run a Guild B302F which he said was bloody nice, but he maintains that my Warwick's also the best he's played. Personally I reckon it's down to personal preference. Whilst someone can love a bass, others can hate it. My dad loves his Ashbory to bits and I love it to an extent, but I can't see why he loves it so much. I play it a lot, although I struggle to get my head around it. It's like with my Jazz. I love it, he hates it. And we both love the Warwicks and Wal
5. 8 although I'm trying to sell 2 of them. Warwick Corvette fretted active Warwick Corvette fretless passive Fender Ashbory Tokai Jazz Sound 5 string Peavey Grind BXP NTB (for sale, PM for details) 4 string Hohner B2a headless (for sale, PM for details) Wal something or other, 4 string fretted passive. looks like a pro but it isn't. Stagg EUB
6. ^^^^ truly epic, I'm listening to Money at the moment.
7. In all fairness, my dad's also a guitarist and bassist too, and has been for 40 years (Well guitar at least) so has all the experience of good and bad deals. The Wal's been in the household for around 15 years now, I just happened to inherit it when I started taking bass properly seriously. As for the Warwicks, the fretless one came up on ebay but was only listed as a Warwick Fretless with a poor photo and no info. Messaged the guy and he said it was made in Germany, so we went for it. £300 and 1 bid. As for the other one, we bought that on a whim. Went into PMT manchester looking for drum sticks in an emergency the afternoon of a gig, and spotted it hung on the walls marked up at £500. Played it and fell in love instantly despite shot strings and bits of green growing out of the frets Also had a John East pre amp fitted too which is worth enough making it another bargain. It used to belong to BadBoy1984 on here too, and I'd love to know what happened to the hard case he was telling me he sold it with
8. Try Brian Eastwood Guitars. Based just ouside Rochdale around the Bacup area. http://www.brianeastwoodguitars.co.uk/
9. I'm 18 but I've been playing around errr, 5 years I reckon. Main basses are a pair of Warwicks and a Wal Other basses include an EUB, ashbory, 5 string peavey grind, and this Tokai Jazz: Bought for £250 and plays better than any of the American Jazzes I've ever played. Result Due to be having DiMarzio or Bartolinnis fitted and a Badass II or similar
10. I'm going to go and have a look. Teacher goes every year and he's suggested I come along, and as it's a 20 minute drive for me I may as well
11. First bass playing gig I had was with my dad's band. Bassist went down a week before the gig with pretty serious illness, so I ended up been asked to fill in with a week to learn a 12 song set, all home brew music. Week later and 2 rehersals, went and blitzed it. I think I was 14 at the time. So technically, first number I gigged on bass was 12 numbers
12. I like a range of sounds just to make it complicated. When I'm playing slap, I want a nice punchy low end with a bright and zingy top. When playing fretless it's got to be smooth yet punchy sound throughout, with a deep sounding low end, and a nice blend of mid and hi. Cuts through beautifully, as when playing normal fretted I love a nice neutral yet punchy sound.
13. 18 years old, looking for experience trying to get onto the gigging circuit. Played for around 5 years to a competant standard and can read too. Can travel with own gear, including electric double bass if required, based in Rochdale, north west. Will play for anything too
14. I've never really understood the concept of the Fender Mex. I've played loads of Squires that're better than Mex basses, Jazz and Precision. However, I've also played much cheaper stuff that has played better than American Fenders too. Sods law I guess and it's great for those who want to have Fender written on their headstock, kinda similar with Warwick Rockbasses. At the end of the day to a lot of people, it's still a Warwick. I wouldn't consider myself as a badge snob, the reason I play 2 Warwicks and a Wal is they came up at fantastically cheap deals, the Wal was already in the family as well, but I like the way they feel and I like the way they sound. I also play a chinese Tokai too which with a badass 2 bridge and decent tuners is the business. If I was in the market for another Jazz or a P, I'd seriously consider one of them Squiers, as I bet with a good bridge and good hardware and pickups, it'll play better than a lot of what Fender MIA are offering at several times the cost, and if I really want to, I can stick a Mighty Mite neck on for whatever reason. At the end of the day, I reckon Fender need to get their act together and look at the quality of stuff coming out much cheaper, and then think hard about what they can do to make their gear worth the money.
15. Cheers, I'd never heard of a TR1 either until a Wal nut mentioned it to me, hence why I'm using apparently everytime I say it Either way I'm not fussed which one it is, and there's no such thing a a cheap Wal It plays and sounds amazing though!
16. Here's mine: It's apparently a 1983 TR1, but I'm not entirely sure to be honest, so if anyone wants to shine any light on that one, please feel free
17.
EV's for us too, pair of sx200 & sx300's. Bullet-proof !
Can't beat them can you? Only got ours for around £200 the pair, brand new!! The shop was having a big clearout and needed rid of them. They're brilliant as they're light, solid and can take a lot of level whilst maintaining dynamic clarity!
18. Got round to learning 'I Wish' and 'Sir Duke' today. They're pretty fun lines to play.
19. Yeah, it's not the end of the world, you still had the experience of playing Haigh which you can't really complain at
20. There was quite a bit given the half hour or so set, but they eventually did crack it. It was only noticeable to people like me who are dead anal about stuff like that, the people I was with only really noticed it when I pointed it out to them What did you make of the house bass rig?? I wasn't particularly struck on the sound it was putting out throughout the day. You could imagine what the different basses would sound like in reality though just by listening to the differences in sound.
21.
No, a VW is only a copy of a Skoda, it's not the real thing.
Balls
22.
Probably, there usually is. Me too. Can't beat them.
I've got a VW... does that count as it's still VAG?
23.
Today my band (Inside View) played at Haigh Hall Festival (A local Wigan festival that has a full afternoon of local unsigned bands) and this year the stage was unreal. There's a week full of big name concerts next week (McFly, N-Dubz, Katherine Jenkins, Ronan Keating etc) and as such they had a really professional set up, certainly the best and biggest stage I've ever played on. I'm still buzzing now despite playing at 1415 this afternoon Here's a quick video of our opening song Judas, though I'm afraid my little jump at 3:04 is a little Busted (I appreciate the bass isn't prevalent in the mix, but it was a handheld cam and I had quite a honky tone ): Picture Perfect: Dumb:
Ah I was at that gig yesterday with my brother, girlfriend and sister. It was a good gig, sounded good from where we were The sound guy evidently messing around with the EQ pots on the desk got irritating after a while though. Had he done it subtlely it would have been fine, but there were random HF cuts and random LF cuts and it started sounding messy. Most of the bands on were pretty tight though
24. One thing I've realised about badge snobbery is that age can come into play a lot of the time. I'm 18 and have been playing for several years now, and what I've realised is that when you're young, if you've got one of the big name brands such as Fender or Gibson, you're automatically superior. In my current band, one guitarist has a mexican Fender Jazzmaster, the other has a Gibson Les Paul Special. They're pretty bog standard and I'm not a fan of both, as the Fender sounds awful and nothing has been done to the mile high set up. But at gigs, everyone raves because it's got Fender and Gibson written on it. Since I gig with a pair of Warwicks and a Wal, older bassists and guitarist who know of Wal immediately spot it and are mugging me for a go on it, yet anyone under the age of 20 I've come across at gigs are glued to the Warwicks, even though I see the Wal as a far superior bass. But if I give them a Rockbass Warwick, and then one of my German ones, I bet they won't tell the difference, as the Rockbass still looks like one, and has "Warwick" written on it. It's nice to be annonymous when playing, as I don't run the gear for badge value. I play it because it works and it's what suits me best. If someone offered me a cheap Jazz with hardware upgrades and stuff, if I liked it, I'd run it. Simple as
25. If you look hard enough it'll happen though! Paid £350 for a german fretless Corvette, and £500 for another german active Corvette with J East tweaks. Just keep your eyes peeled
