Good call, I sold a Fender Precision to a Basschatter who then had Shuker shave the neck down to Jazz width so I’m sure they’d be happy to do so on one of their own basses.

I listened on my iPhone so the bass wasn’t that prominent, which in all likelihood means that on proper systems it will be in just the right place.

I had an EBMM Stingray (about 15 years old) with a (brand new) Sterling by Musicman Ray34 as backup. Aside from the worn finish on the neck of the EBMM and the very slightly harsher top-end of the Ray34 there really wasn’t much difference between them. I do wonder if the Ray34 had been of similar age if the top end might have dulled a tad and if the neck had slightly worn too. I do think Mart has hit it tho, thus will be an itch that needs scratching.

+1 - used they go for about £400 and worth every penny imo.

They look good but after many years of knowing roughly how much to turn each Machinehead on each string to get where I need to be this would confuse me a bit, I’d probably end up snapping a few strings getting used to them. Gotta say tho, a good set of tuners really improves an instrument, just put a set of Hipshots on a Mex Fender, nothing wrong with the stock ones, just wanted better tuning & stability as this will be my “flying” bass. New Graphtec nut too, installation courtesy of @gary mac has made a nice improvement.

I think if I were dropping a whole tone then I’d go for 50-110s, and adopt the capo strategy for E as per @Lfalex v1.1

I’ve not used one but I’ve heard bands use one when it was a provided amp and it sounded great.

I’ve used 45-100 Elixirs with a Hipshot Extender on the E and they’ve been fine for dropping it to D.

If Dave at Ashdown says it will be fine that’s a good enough recommendation

Appetite for Destruction by Guns N Roses. For some reason I really didn’t like them when they emerged, this only changed some 20 years after AFD came out.

A KiOgon loom is a worthy addition to most basses, and will more than likely help on the low end on/off aspect. As Hooky says rolled fingerboard will make it feel & play a lot better.

Good to see they’re making some improvements, think the UK bass playing world is far better off with BD around.

Re grunge ending hair metal, a (more than slightly deluded) mate of mine still blames Nirvana for ending his musical career. Without any realisation that it never actually started of course.

As per usual my aim is to offload. I know I have the right gear for my needs so none of that is going anywhere, but depending on how the year & COVID goes I may well do a bit of buying & selling to try stuff out and for something to do.

Precision & Classic Channel sound great

Listen to Wayward Son by Kansas and spot many influences on JJ Burnells bass playing. If JJ was unaware of the song at the time then he managed to develop some very similar styles by other means. I don’t say this in a slagging off fashion, I like The Stranglers a lot, I was just rather amazed when learning Wayward Son earlier this year at how similar it is to a lot of their basslines.

Korean Squiers imo are hidden gems, I know I’m more than slightly biased towards Precisions but they really are great basses.

Agree, Mick Karn was a very individual talent.
