So, many years on from when this thread started and glad to say that my fave bass is still a US Fender Precision.
-
I love gigging, but have found that I need to get the right balance. My last band was pretty full-on, gigging most weekends with sometimes gigs both Fri & Sat, and these gigs were all over the UK and in Europe. Whilst it was great I just wasn’t getting enough rest & recuperation time. So I’m now in a band that does about 10 gigs a year, which suits me much better.

Yep, my name is Lozz and I have a ‘burst/rosewood/tort Precision.
-
And if you listened to Talkbass as well said Precision would have tort (it’s the law round there)
-
Luckily our drummer is more than up to the job. The only downside to him is his kit, it’s enormous and takes forever to load/unload and set up/break down. But he’s like a human metronome, and has nailed all of them really well.
-
I’m surprised about that, I’m sure there was a dedicated thread on here about where someone said it really opened the amp up.
-
I’ll bet that’s a combination that sounds great - what bass were you using with it?
-
Yeah it will be difficult, the guy who used to work at our rehearsal studio said either a young guy who still has the ability to go high or a girl with a strong voice would be our best choices. Chances are unlikely on either, given if we did gig it would be two or three max per year I can’t see someone who is able to sing those songs properly not wanting to be gigging regularly.

Best string gauges for D standard 4 string?
Lozz196 replied to BillyBass's topic in Accessories and Misc
Many moons ago - about 35 - the band I was in dropped to D and I used 50 - 110 Roto steels for that. My bass had been strung with the “standard” 45 - 105s that came with it but they were just too floppy, the music shop recommended the Rotos and they worked fine. -

Withdrawn One Mexican 2014 Fender Precision in very good condition. No dings or knocks, back of neck in pretty much new condition. I’ve had a Graphtec nut installed and added a Hipshot 3-way string retainer rather than the original string tree. No postage but am willing to meet up halfway within reason.

Not noticed anything yet, over time maybe but I’ve set them up exactly the same and they feel/play pretty much identical.
-
Ah, well the 2013 has a couple of (very slight) knocks and a gigging instrument is likely to pick up some along the road so as that one already has some I’ll be less precious with it. If they’d been in exactly the same condition it would have been the 2014 as my backup Mex Precision is a 2014, would have appeased my OCD.

Calling @KiOgon - John, any ideas on this one?
-
So I’ve been on a bit of a quest, and last week yielded these two fine basses from my fave 2013-16 range of Fender US Standards, a 2013 from our very own @vincbtand a 2014 from the ‘bay. Match very nicely with my fave 2015. All that was needed was A-String Retainers and Hipshot Drop-D Extenders. The 13 gets the gigging band, the 14 gets the classic rock band.

Ah, from memory we do Devils Bleeding Crown - Volbeat This Corrosion - Maryslim version Runaway - Bon Jovi Stargazer, Tarot Woman, I Surrender - Rainbow Dazed & Confused - Led Zep Wayward Son - Kansas Its So Easy, Live & Let Die - Guns N Roses Out in The Fields - Gary Moore Holy Diver - Dio And just about to do Fairies Wear Boots by Black Sabbath Edit - how did I forget to put in Highway Star by Deep Purple!
-
That’s a great Pbass shootout, I think all sounded great, though I’d reckon the Seymour Duncan QP pickup in the Nate contributed a lot to the top end of that bass. I think my overall fave was the 68.
-
Will do Tim Chris hasn’t been around since before I joined so it’s vocless at present, and likely to stay that way.
-
And apparently Ashdown can do a mod on the eq to get greater flexibility from it
-
That’s what I’m currently doing with Dom & the guys, Tim. We don’t want to gig - hence why we’ve not got a singer - we just like a get together once every other week to play some quite difficult songs. It makes us better as musicians, plus it’s a good laugh. I’ve become a lot better on bass doing this for the last couple of years, can play stuff I would have thought was far beyond me.
-
Definitely, I recall one gig a mate of mine did, onstage his bass was just about right, out front it decimated the rest of the band (pub-gig/backline only, no FOH)
-
At louder volumes the "thickness/heft" of the ABM comes through above the sound of the RM, so the bass would more than likely sound "bigger" - or at least that`s been my experience from using those two amps. The ABM sounds louder when in fact it`s that the sound just has more depth to it, giving a greater presence. As has been said though, you don`t want your on-stage volume to be so much louder than the rest of the band, so going though the PA not at a louder volume than your amp less will still give a better spread for the bass. I`d also in this case consider removing some of the low end for whatever goes through the PA. And after all that, if it`s not worked, buy those subs!

Agree, for some reason Fender & Markbass seem to work well together and produce a very reassuring bass sound.
-
And the decision is… Maple Identical basses, both set up the same, same strings, the maple bass just fitted in with the sound of the band better, with the rosewood being a lot deeper. We were all quite surprised at the difference. So it’s 3 x US 2013-16 Precisions in black/black/maple, fave for home use, and one for each band.
