1. I have recently read other posts about the John East retro Jazz pre-amp and different replacement pickups (SD quarter pounders appear to be about the most popular). I am considering some mods to my Jazz bass and was wondering whether the pickups would still be required if I went for the pre amp. What do you think?
2. You either wrote the music you play or you didn't. It's as simple as that. I have played in numerous originals and covers bands and am now rehearsing for a Bowie tribute. I didn't write any of the songs, so its all the same to me.
3. The tort goes well with the carpet. I also think white pearl.
4. Cheers Muzz Enjoy the bass.
5. Just finished reading the book. Loved it. Seems like a top bloke.
6. I am looking to sell my USA Standard Jazz Bass, bought new from the Bass Centre in 2004 as a back-up bass. As a result it has only been gigged twice, but I use it regularly for practicing at home. It is all original apart from a Hipshot D-tuner, is in excellent condition, and has the S-1 switch. It comes complete with the original moulded case and unused accessory pack. I am looking for £500. I would prefer not to post it, but would be happy to meet you half way if Essex is a bit of a trek. Here are some photos:
7. Thanks. TIM? now I'm really confused. Who's going to spill the beans?
8. Apologies in advance if I'm being a bit dense here. I'm intending on putting one of my Jazz basses up for sale on the marketplace, but I have one question that the guidance notes don't really help with. What does BUMP mean? Is there anything else I should know before I proceed? Thanks
9. Started a band at school without any musical knowledge. Eventually got a bass to prevent myself from being kicked out.
10.
Ooo, I like the look of that, very nice, here's mine with the same strap locks,
That picture brings back some memories! How old is that one? The body shape looks a bit more rounded off than mine.
11. Just wanted to share this. Apologies for the grainy photos. I bought 'Be Be' in 1987 because it looked a bit like the pink one that Billy Sheehan had. Over the next few years it underwent various mods, including: - brass/bone nut - OBL pickups - Schaller bridge - D-tuner - Pickup selector replaced with pan switch After buying a Kubicki bass in 1992, I had the frets taken out of this one, realised I couldn't play fretless and put it in the loft. Fast forward to the present day. Mike Walsh has put a new maple fretboard on it and given it a general spruce up. I am chuffed to bits.
12.
More than anything, I find Wolstenholme's material very fun to play. He's no bass god or virtuoso, but he knows how to write strong, inventive and very energetic parts which compliment the band really well. Top notch player in my opinion.
I agree that he's top notch, but would say that he is also a bass god. He may not be a Victor Wooten* but has definitely sold more records, played to more people and probably inspired many more to start playing. I have gigged Hysteria and New Born. Great fun but totally relentless and hurt like hell. *or insert the virtuoso player of your choice
13. After playing bass for a few months, I decided to play something to my mum that I thought was impressive. Afterwards all she said was "try playing with your mouth closed".
14. Ten years ago I stopped playing for three years to concentrate on a professional qualification. The day after my last exam when I was looking forward to picking the bass up again, I shut my right index finger in the car door. It went black and the nail eventually fell off. This took some time. It was as if the nail had died and a new one started to grow underneath. I'm sorry to say this but it took almost six months for it to get back to 'normal'. However, this was a very different type of injury to the one you described. Try to look on it as an opportunity to practice playing with a pick or 'double-thumping'!
15. My sunburst Jazz is Bill and the black one is Phil. The Yamaha has always been BeeBee. Likely to be selling Phil when BeeBee (eventually) returns from surgery. Oh, and the SWR 4X10 that I have had for 20 years is called Amanda (De Cabinet).
16. OK, it will have to be Scott Thunes then. I doubt that I'll ever play 'superman' anyway.
17. Scott Thunes' (or as an alternative, the bloke who played on Superman by Black Lace)
18. I started a band at school despite not being able to sing or play an instrument. As time went on 'proper' musicians joined the band and eventually wanted me out. I bought a Westone Thunder Jet bass and a 10w Marshall amp to prevent this from happening. 25 years later I have played more gigs, and made more money through music than all of them put together. People seem to like what I do, I am becoming increasingly open minded in my old age and have a greater appetite for learning than ever before. Musicians I have played with will say that although I can be a pain in the arse, I will occasionally make them laugh so hard that their drink will shoot out of their nose. I am proud of all of the above.
19. Fantastic stuff: http://home.netcom.com/~bigear/Zappa.html
20. Awesome gig, and a little bit emotional in places. Scott Thunes was on top form, although you can't fault the band Dweezil had put together. I was expecting to hate The Boosh and retire to the bar, however they won me over with 'Underwater Steve'. All in all a fantastic day I feel. Multiple eargasms all round.
21. I'm going to the ZPZ gig and the Q&A in the afternoon. Can't wait.
22. His number has been taken down from the website as it says he is moving. As the website suggests, I sent Mike an e-mail earlier. No reply as yet.
23. The other week one of mine* just fell off for no reason. Also, I stopped using the ring finger of my plucking hand because it never got a decent callus. * Calluses
