1.
certainly wouldn't wack a J-Retro in a 73 .. sacrilege!
I must admit that I don't really understand this argument. Like many, I would love a vintage Fender. However, I would then be happy to make some non-intrusive mods so it plays and sounds as good as it can be - and then go out and enjoy playing it! I think that collectors can get a bit anal about the value of instruments as an investment - I mean, even a pre-cbs would not give you enough to retire on would it?
2.
buy and fit a John East J-Retro 01 preamp.
+1. I can't tell you what a massive difference this has made to my sound (and playing) in just a few short weeks.
3. I bet Mustang Sally sounds the business on that bass.
4. I have always thought that most music shops would benefit from being firebombed! However, it is always a pleasure dealing with the Bass Merchant. Nothing is too much trouble.
5. I would choose John Paul Jones Would have said Tal or Esparanza but it appears that I am a little too far down the queue...
6. Really short here too, but probably leaving about 1mm of white on the right hand plucking fingers. Men with long manicured fingernails are all 'odd' - Fact.
7.
After a couple of tunes you will recognise patterns and licks that the particular player uses often,it doesn't matter if it's Flea,Claypool,Marcus,Victor or whoever-everyone does it-and once you can play their licks and ideas,it becomes easier and you learn less.
That seems like a real positive to me. And as you say, undertaking a similar exercise for a variety of artistes will extend your own vocabulary. I recently put a lot of work into rehearsing for a Bowie tribute. Identifying patterns between what, at first listen, appear to be very different songs written decades apart I found particularly rewarding.
8.
Why would you want to learn an album of songs if you weren't going to gig them? I understand learning and practising a song, a riff or a technique but I'm with Bilbo on this. A whole album, why?
A few months back Bilbo said in a different thread that hard work and learning is fun. That's the answer. Also, even if I never gigged the actual songs. I would definitely be gigging what I learned from them.
9. In a recent issue of Bass Guitar Magazine (64) Billy Sheehan said: "When I do clinics I always tell people, 'Go and learn the whole of Sgt. Pepper - you'll come out of it a better bass player'". Well, armed only with my Beatles songbook I've decided that I will put this to the test. The reason for posting this is to see whether anyone wants to join me and share thoughts etc. Kind of like a book club. But different. Cheers

Bowie Tribute

Playing a Bowie tribute tonight with the Spiderz at the Harwich Electric Palace. Have really been looking forward to this.
11.
I am not going to get the Beiber gig because I am 25 years too old but, that aside, I am pretty confident that any MD worth his salt would recognise that I was not actually interested and my presence would be a negative influence on the band dynamic, even if I was up to the gig playing wise. But, if it was my choice, I'd walk anyway
'Bieber & Bilbo' has quite a ring to it, though, don't you think? I'd definitely buy a ticket.
12.
I don't know this, please elaborate.
In Joe's Garage, music is made illegal and the story follows the exploits of Joe (who used to be a nice boy). In the liner notes Zappa states that music is actually illegal in Iran. I don't know if this is/was true. I won't say any more because I think that you should go and listen to the album. But needless to say it is lyrically hilarious and musically mind blowing. Keep it greasy,
13. The answer lies in Zappa's "Joe's Garage". p.s. Why does it hurt when I pee?
14. It's no more barmy than Ibanez putting a handle on the Jem guitars. I personally prefer a strap as I only have two hands.
15. That's hilarious - but at the same time quite a good idea. Where's my drill...
16. After reading some of the other threads about the John East J-Retro I decided to get one for my Jazz bass. The results are amazing. It even sounds significantly better than it did before in passive mode! I now have everything I could possibly need in one bass. I'm a very happy boy.
17. Maybe they did Ashes to Ashes straight after Under Pressure and she is having a little rest. She is amazing, though. And so is this guy - guitarists who play bass, eh!
18. What's going on here? Gail Ann Dorsey (regular bass player at that time) is playing rhythm guitar.

Yamaha BBs
they only do them with rosewood boards,
I had this done to my BB1100S: Possibly featuring in the for sale section shortly.
20. I generally find myself stage left, but it can be a pain in more complicated numbers as you are looking away from the rest of the band. I am currently in a band with a left handed drummer, so may make an appeal for stage right.
21. I totally agree. Have seen far too many bands end their main set without doing their big hit. Pulp and Common People springs immediately to mind. Also I don't think that Eddie comes out until Maiden's encore now either. I wasn't implying that Eddie was gay BTW.
22. I like the way they put the Ricky at No.1 and then have an interview with Geddy Lee in which he basically says that the Jazz is much better.
23. Thanks for the replies guys. I'll probably go for the pickups first as I want to try them with the S-1 switch on the bass. Less outlay as well. However, as I'm also thinking about rationalising down to one bass the John East may soon follow to provide more versatility. Cheers
