1. Honestly i would have exploded if I'd had an amp like that at fifteen!
2. If i was buying an amp now in that price range and from what you have said it would be a Genz Benz contour combo, you won't get better for £300 and you can add a cab if you need to later, i played through one at a jam night a few Weeks ago and it was brilliant on it's own, get one!
3. be careful what you wish for Fender fanbois, if you kick up too much fuss they will probably add a few more and sell them at a premium as lightweight deluxe versions or something!
4.
Though i dont gig ive been using a hercules stand. nice wide footprint and small outriggers but no way of securing the bass to the stand. its rather weighty and dont fold up much past in half size.
Same here, the bow hanger is a nice touch too, although it only folds in half I find its nice and flat so it can be put underneath all my other gear or even slid on top as its quite thin when folded.
5. Another great lesson Geoff, thanks.
6. I didnt like stingrays at all, big clumsy, wide necked lumps. Went to buy a warwick with £1400 in my pocket in 2002, the warwick was faulty from the factory, tried a Ric, horrible in every way other than looks, and tried some more Rays just to double check they were as bad as I remembered from the last time.....owned 6 since
7. Already culled mine
8.
The prices are mental for DB strings. I don't know anything about string construction other than the martketing bits of hex core and round core etc (I have no idea why that is important) - but other than being a bit longer and needing a bit more material - how on earth are DB strings so much more expensive? Is it just a volume thing that the margins have to be higher because of less sales? Or do they really cost loads more to make? How long do DB strings last anyway?
On recommendation of fellow bc members I have fitted spirocores to my db and eub, £300! But they reckon ten years to be possible, we will see. Its a really expensive addiction lots of db players have trying out string types and tensions.
9.
I'm the opposite, massively enjoying everything and new opportunities presenting themselves all the time.
I have always found getting gigs quite easy (not always good gigs) and im sure one facebook update would get me a gig within a week, im just not really feeling it. I have a wrist injury that is looking like I will be permanantly not as good as I was, that could cause me a problem if any local bands that know me find that im not as good as they remember seeing me with other local acts
10.
Join somebody sub-decent, and drag them up with you
Sometimes you just get dragged down to theirs instead though, lol
11.
Best thing you could do mate is find someone decent to play your upright with. Just dive in there, it's the only way to improve really.
I think deep down I already know you are right
12. Haha nice, id be very happy to find some db sets in there! Rule of thumb appears to be add the word orchestral and add a zero to the end of the price tag
13.
Why would we have bike sheds when we all had drivers darling?
To be fair as posh as that school is you wouldnt want to walk anywhere nearby would you!
14.
We had an Encore J in black I seem to recall... with a 50w laney. Lucky to have one by what I'm reading here... Mind you, one of the teachers who taught trombone was a sh1t hot bass player. 5 string Wal hanging up in his office with a Peterson combo... for those moments when he fancied a dabble.
You went to the posh school though! We had nothing unless you took your own in other than a very sad looking double bass tuned to good knows what. I had an ibanez guitar back then, failed guitarist you see....
15. Mine used to cut out way before the fire started!
16. You can watch the ladies all night if you don't have to keep looking at the finger board!
17. Twice it appears!
18. I made a public apology for being anti five string though

20.
Isn't sound a little bit objective? The 212 had lots of clarity and a a very full range, just to my ears, at least with my bass/setup, it sounded like there was a slight scoop in the upper mids which I don't find with my Vanderkley. What makes you say that the Ashdown will choke the Genz? Frequency response? Experience? Dave
I have owned and used loads of Ashdown gear, they sound like someone forgot to take the packing box off before using them, loads of guys on here say they don't lack any top end usually the guys playing a p bass with flats using their thumb and with a foam mute behind the strings! The Genz can recreate that if you put a woolly amp through it but putting your Genz into an Ashdown cab won't get rid of the dull cab, it might have more top than a full Ashdown rig and it might even be enough for your tastes but that's what i mean by choked, something which will not allow the full Genz range to flow through, choked.
21. I'm hoping they will keep the rumble ones as a sort of squier range and release a usa (taiwan lol) genz circuit fender range.
22. I have a few irons in the fire but I'm just not feeling it lately. I'd like an upright gig but I don't feel good enough to try joining anyone decent yet. Without sounding like an arse I can play it and I'm sure there are many players gigging on elec bass at a similar standard to my upright standard but its a long way off my normal ability on elec bass if that makes sense?
23. Stands a good chance, you can bet the fender fans that previously slagged them off will say they sounds better even if they are the same circuits inside!
24. I'm with you mate, not the vmax though, maybe a nice triumph for me Can I be arsed? Is it worth it? Do I just stick to playing upright at home and sell 2 stingrays?.....
25. An ashdown cab will just choke your shuttlemax imo, the neo2x12 is basically just a pa cab so I can't see how it would be smooth or dark, it can do smooth and it can do dark, but if you put a gritty ampeg simulator through it then it would do that too. You get out what you put in imo, ask someone with a streamliner 900 if they find a lack of grit for example
