1.
If you stomach travelling to Birmingham there's bound to be someone there who could teach you, possibly a jazz student at the Conservatoire (for jazz) or a CBSO player (for classical). The very fine jazz trumpeter Percy Pursglove is also a superb bass player and teaches at the Conservatoire. He lives in Nuneaton but you might be able to see him in Birmingham. Also do you have jazz gigs that happen near your locale? If so, try and get in contact with the musicians and see if they can help you out.
Looks like I need to do a bit of digging then, thanks.
2.
Whatever it is, it's fowl.
Trust you to get all pigeon chested about it, ducks for cover.....
3. Neither are correct, that was my first point really, what is good for the goose might not be good for the gander after all, maybe your a goose maybe I am a gander? I have no idea what I am on about now either
4. There are a few people on here who have lost gigs due to five string basses, lots of pro's have told me they keep a burst and tort P bass just for those gigs.
5.
... and... "You need to get a five-string."
And the flip side then, "proper bass players only play four strings, everything can be done on a four with a D tuner etc etc etc" it can't and I personally should have gone to five years earlier.
6. I have been working through Geoffs videos and the Rufus Reid book so I am doing quite a bit of this and that, I think I really need someone to see what I am doing right/wrong and generally give me some focus now.
7. I want to be able to at least get a tune out of the bow, make sure the bass and the bow are as they should be, make sure I am holding the bass correctly and make sure my left and right hand techniques are heading in the right direction. That will take a lesson on its own and more probably so lesson 2 would be to get me walking better to some simple jazz tracks etc, after that who knows.
8. OK folks my function band has gone pear shaped and I am not feeling the elc bass much really so I really need to see if I can find a tutor and get my mojo on with the upright. I have been working through Geoff's discover double bass lessons online which as we know are excellent and if I cant find anyone local I might have to take a drive up to see him in person yet. I could do with some pointers regarding the bow and a tutor to try my bows out to see if they are ok etc likewise my DB just in case I have some glaring issues I have missed, very possible! I am based near Stafford but google does not bring much stuff up at all, I have found this guy http://www.musicteachers.co.uk/teacher/d5366783dedb5969e22b Paul Jefferies but I have no idea about him, not too far being in Burton so I might drop him an email and see what he says. Tim Toft's are quite near to me so I was thinking I should ring them and ask if they know a local tutor too? Any thoughts or suggestions? I am listening to David Wong playing with Hank Jones to get me in the zone, which I am liking a lot
9. I dont know as I have never ordered one, I go around every shop and try every bass in there then return to the first shop that stocked Stingrays and choose which colour I like before taking it home to set it up to my liking
10. Haha, love it! I managed about 15 hours of my A team box set instead of learning any theory when I was off after my arm surgery.
11. It came wrapped in bubble wrap inside some drain pipe!
12. All my stingrays have arrived in the time it took to hand the cash over at the till
13. Being fretless I bet Bernie will remeber it well! Where is EBS freak when you want him?
14. My band has just gone tits up after the drummer left (long story, singer practically stalking him!) but to be fair I was the one who decided I didn't want to learn all the stuff with a new drummer so I am the tosser everyone here is upset with but I have been there before and its hard work going round in circles learning the same set wondering if the new drummer will leave or be kicked out before the gigs begin. I'm not feeling it lately and have had wrist problems for nearly a year, I am going to practice upright bass for a bit and see who comes knocking that sparks my mojo for elec bass. Best wishes to your drummer though some things are more important than band squabbles
15. I need to get practicing!
16. Mine came quite quickly and was well packed if that helps
17. I have a french Yita, not sure which one it is but it was about £100 I think? Its quite pretty but I have no idea how good or bad it is as my bow skills are lacking a lot
18. As i understand it places like bass direct are swamped with offers to stock these one of basses, but understandably they don't want hundreds of brands all offering different percentages only to take all the flak for mistakes and delays the builders make, read back through the thread would you want to be the public face for any of the brands mentioned for a very small cut of the proceeds?
19. That's really cool Dave!
20. That is brilliant!
21.
Does anyone remember when cars didn't have power steering as standard? Everyone had muscles! I drove my dad's elderly 1982 Ford Sierra last year (manual steering) and could hardly turn the wheel! Technology is turning us into weaklings!
As a long term addict of rusty terrible cars what we have done is forgot how to drive! Dry steering wasn't done before because you couldn't unless you were a beefcake, we learnt how to only steer with the car in motion be it forwards or backwards, my Morris 1000 has lighter steering than the wifes Focus Zetec too Anyway back OT.......
22. I don't normally recommend combos over separates but them genz contour amps sound great!
23. I have tried the whole range extensively about 5 years ago, all the rooms are (were) peavey equipped, pa, bass, guitar and keyboard amps. The different sized rooms had a suitable sized rig with the best room having the top of the range rigs and best pa, I like peavey gear and was in the market for a new amp at the time to replace my ashdown rig (faulty) on paper they were perfect and just a matter of choosing which one, bought a shuttle 6.0 and a 2x12T cab
