1. I've so far owned Stingray basses from 79-2010, all solid work horses.
2. I don't know why we bother with a judicial system, scientists, surveys and investigations costing millions when there is ALWAYS a guy on the internet who knew all the facts all along!
3.
Do you reckon that's to do with the more compressed and slightly more aggresive nature of the 5 string's ceramic pickup as opposed to the 4 string's alnico one? If so, would a 4 string EBMM Sterling pickup (also ceramic) fix the issue?
No, not all Stingray fives have ceramic pickups, early ones don't and the new ones don't, nor the classic, I've got three SR5s and only one is ceramic, it does sound cracking though!
4. Possibly, I like 40 60 80 100 on a Ray 4.
5. Yes the 5s dont appear to get the issue. I think the best way to solve or reduce the issue is to lower the EA side rather than raise the DG side and generally keep the pickup as far from the strings as possible, I set the treble side to a height that gives a nice output level then try and balance the bass side when playing in isolation at home, then I take a screwdriver to rehearsal to fine tune the bass side when playing in the mix, so far it's worked 100% of the time on 4 basses.
6. The biggest thing you'll notice to start with will be the nut width, I can't get on with skinny Jazz necks that well so I like a Ray neck. Some ebmm ones are a bit clubby if you're not used to them, I prefer the flatter profile of the older ones which is good as my 5 strings are all like that as is my Jazz v. I can't be doing with passives basses these days, I don't know what it is but I find they lack heft far more than a class D and an active bass! You need to try it out for size and see what you think, at £700 you're unlikely to lose any money.
7. I'm not certain where mine was built, Romania I think, all the rest are Osbipo or Corona though
8.
except Squier is made by Fender, so it is a Fender product. Skoda is not made by Audi, they just share parent company Not saying it's OK to call a Squier a Fender, but if they call it a "Squier by Fender" I think that's OK.
Well the A3 is built in Brazil alongside the Skoda citigo amongst many others and the Q7 is built at the SEAT factory in Barcelona alongside the SEAT/Skoda/VW cars so I'd have to disagree? I own two VWs neither were built in Germany, are they still VWs?
9. I like all my basses to be constructed in California, keeps it simple.
10. I think there are plenty of them stashed away under beds and in cupboards, once they dropped in value so steeply a while ago those that could afford to hang onto them have rather than sell them cheap. Sometimes it's better to have a product that is never truly in fashion but carries on steadily than one than takes off quickly and becomes "of it's time", a trace Eliot amp and a Warwick bass is just too 90's for most of us now
11. Ok here's my summing up- Bass Solo = Ok for a short burst. Solo Bass = Limited appeal.
12.
It would be worth ringing Ashdown who have always been good at customer support, even when I rang them when their offices were flooded a few years back!
There's a joke about amps setting on fire somewhere in there but it's too early for me to construct one
13. Most of the earlier five in a row fender five string basses were unplayable anyway! I tried one years ago, like a four string jazz with a B string added badly, put me off them for ages then I tried one again but with the four and one head, dual graphite rods, high mass bridge, string through body etc, it's now my gigging bass!
14. Our old guitarist was a massive fan of Tokai Les Pauls, they actually make models that cost more than Gibson ones the days, he paid 2.5k for one and his son in law paid 3k for one, for Tokais!!
15.
It looks like a lump of foam.. wheres the mic? Where does it fit?
Ha I'm glad you said that, my thoughts exactly!
16. The effect of stereo effects is an effect in itself, a mic'd guitar amp producing true stereo fx via 2 or more speakers can still be sent to the mix as a mono feed to be recorded or live to use the effect rather than a simulated sound produced by a single speaker and a stereo fx pedal, a mic'd Lesley speaker will still sound more realistic than a Lesley fx unit, you don't need the FOH pa speakers to spin to enjoy it at the back do you?
17.
Bearing in mind a bridged amp of 800w will only do 400w per side. You don't get 2x400w=800w This is the problem with bi-amping which introduces sub in the equation potentially which is really the last thing you want, IMO. Nice idea, but in practice, no advantage at all.
What's that got to do with Stereo?
18. I've never had one that runs passive.
19. I don't think it's narrow mindedness, if you listen and don't enjoy it then that's it, trying to force it onto people won't make them like it, just dislike you maybe.
20. There's no rule that says you can't record a whole album using only a bass guitar, there's also no rule to say anyone has to listen to it or that those that do need to enjoy it.
21. Phew, glad it's not just me!
22. I've gone the other way and carried the hand shape using three fingers (with the 3rd behind the pinkie to help) onto electric bass
23. When is a bass not a bass too? Is a nine string bass played through a myriad of fx and octavers still what most people are thinking of when they say a bass isn't a solo instrument?
