1. I've yet to witness first hand or hear of a guitarist that has altered their ways. The ones that need to do it at rehearsal are normally a lost cause.
2. And another decent looking bass has just been listed on here for £700! Pics please
3. Ha
4. Looks like typical Fender QC looking at the fret work and tuners, I've got the 5 string version but mines a bit bigger unless you have massive hands?
5.
Agreed, however and I haven't read all the posts here. Wouldn't conversion means a new neck, new pick ups and electronics, new bridge? Building one from scratch seems to make more sense. I'm glad I'm a "dyed in the wool" 4 string guy. Blue
My Stingray 5 necks probably aren't much wider if at all than some P bass necks, new nut and an extra tuner, different bridge job done. Results may vary, wildly.
6. Ha, you never know when someone might need a bottle opening though
7.
you are absolutely right, I don't 'get' social media, I'm just an old fart, never heard of Postmodern Jukebox but I would imagine they got where they are through Social Media recommendations, much like in the old days when you actually met people face to face and someone said "Have you heard so and so, it's brilliant" the same applies on Social Media, but bands liking other bands as a reciprocal agreement can't do any good, you need Social Media users recommending them to other Social Media users because they like them, Social Media has made checking out bands a lot easier but they still need to be properly liked for it to work, or maybe I'm missing something?
I think you are, people see a band they like on here that they thought they would never meet in a million years, a year later they are away for the weekend and who pops up on their feed, only the band they liked all that time ago that have a gig that night in that town! I agree about liking for likes sake btw, if I looked at a link above and didn't like what I saw I wouldn't "like" it, but I don't think you need to see the band first in person to like them, I have never seen Nirvana but I like them Mcnach clicked on a link I used to have in my sig, he ended up buying an album, I shall forever be thankful
8. Broke my arm and needed to play something held vertical.
9. I saw Velvet Revolver at the NIA quite a few years ago, they were snorting something off the top of the PA cabs, not sure if they had any tablets on stage though?
10.
sorry,a facebook 'like' should be because you've actually seen the band and like them, not some sort of reciprocal agreement to get loads of 'likes' completely devalues the system IMO of course
This isn't how the kids understand social media Paul, they will find whatever from wherever by whoever whenever, if they like what they see then they will give it a like and follow it. For example Postmodern Jukebox have been on a world tour playing live after people liked their recorded songs on social media.
11. The best ever 4 string I have played was a Celinder J, if I had not switched to 5 strings I would have made sure I was the next owner of it.
12.
Re. the talk of "learn your parts", etc, there's a world of difference between an amateur band that has its one or two sets - possibly 30-40 songs - that it plays regardless of where it is and a function band, which can have a potential repertoire of hundreds, even thousands of numbers. It simply isn't possible to keep that much material in a state of constant readiness (That's why orchestral, big band, etc musicians use music). What counts is the end result.
We've been here with the stand thread, those that are playing alright now in the tickled trout will never understand! I say this as someone with alright now in the set of one of my bands, the singer/guitarist also uses a stand!
13. We need at least one for the digital mixer I've given up on these what should or shouldn't a band be doing threads, even though my band does everything wrong looking at most of these threads we still have dates in the diary, those to me are more telling than some guy on the internet telling you he has learnt all the words to the same thirty blues rock covers he has been playing for thirty years
14. So maybe they were massive 17 years ago, I must have missed them.
15.
I went to the October Double Bass Bash. I was curious too. I can recommend a visit to the next one. I have no intention about investing in more kit but I love all things bass, including synth. I came away having had a go on a fetchingly dressed leopard skin five string DB with simple guidance as to stance and how to rest the instrument on my "power belly" whilst playing. Many thanks Owen for letting me grope your main squeeze. Heeheehee. You are right about it being an art in itself. Bowing is very much a technique to be mastered and we were treated to an informal yet informed discussion about bowing, French and otherwise. A couple of members who's dress code reminded me of Hollywood pictures of the fifties were bowless. These were slappers of the highest order (winks @ chaps concerned). They demonstrated syncopated rhythms with a thick background curtain of low notes through an impressively compact rig. One was heard to say something along the lines of "I believe the only place for a bow is on a yorkshire terrier!" It was fun.
Haha, it was a great day out, I still haven't spent enough time practising with my bow, maybe next year......
16. I wouldn't call it a corner either, it's just a stone clad pillar!
17. in the 70s they had it in the 60s for Patrick Swayze to dance to? Terrible film
18. Stagg nut to bridge centre 1050mm DB nut to bridge centre 1055mm Stagg bridge centre to string ball 280mm DB bridge centre to string ball 200mm That's the problem, 75mm (3 inches) extra string lost below the bridge is quite a lot, what does the Aria measure? The silks in the peg box on the DB are only two inches past the nut hence my problem fitting normal Spiros.
19. I'll have a measure in a bit, I thought about getting a nice maple block made by my mate to keep the break angle the same but keep the strength the same, that said it hasn't split or cracked since I 'adapted it'.
20. I don't qualify on any level, thank f*** I suspect I'll be playing more gigs than them next year too.
21. All my five string basses are similar weights to the four string versions they replaced, the US Jazz V is lighter than most Stingray 4s. The extra weight is only an issue if you buy a heavy one, I've played a 16lb 70s Jazz in the past.
22. Yep, gets the job done and shows people not only what you are like but also that you are a real band with the equipment required to inspire confidence in booking you. It also shows roughly what area you will require etc. I'd suggest two versions of it, one a little bit shorter for things where it just gets clicked on then this version on your web page or agency stuff once they've liked you enough to look a bit deeper, on the longer version a quick few words confirming that you have insurance and PAT testing certificates you can email direct to the venue before hand etc and any requirements you have like stage area, I've stolen that from someone else here from their show reel but it does look professional, also if the person booking it was specifically told that it would be required it might just jog their memory when they see your video and book you even if the other bands have insurance etc but either didn't mention it or buried it in the small print on their website. It's loads better than our band's promo already though so well done
23. These are the Stagg replacement strings but they are meant to be terrible, at 40 euros instead of £145 for Spiros I suppose that is why! https://www.thomann....CFYk_GwoddL4JKQ It looks like people might be fitting 4/4 strings to them as there is reference to strings being too long rather than too short.
24. Good question! I think 4/4 length strings will fit just fine but then the tensions will be different over the "almost" 3/4 length. We need someone with an Aria to help, anyone? I can measure my Stagg to see if it is indeed the same if you measure the Aria, I spent £145 on the Spiros and had messed the silks up trying to fit them before I worked it out , I don't want to see anyone else do the same. That said they are perfect now they are on it.
