As an aside to the aside, I've just remembered this email from RS from an exchange I had with him in 2006 after seeing him at the Coventry Jazz Festival. I'd asked about the mods he'd made to his bass. Hope it's of interest. "RS Fender Fretless is an ash body made by my Dad in 76. Just recently I had to change the neck as I had worn the fretboard out. It now has a Japanese Fender Fretless Jazz neck, 2005. Electrics as Jazz Fender set up with Demarzios PB and JB. Schaller bridge and machine heads, (prefer the machine quality of these to the Fender ones), Roto Sound Jazz strings. it is strung now with my last set of JB roundwounds from my 76 to 79 period. Roto Sound supplied 90 sets durring my Camel performance period, and I only used a few then on tours, so its taken till now to exhaust this supply. The latest Roto Sound strings not so good tonally. String making is more refined now, so I will be searching and researching for a new brand that have the right tension and PING! Time for a double bass me thinks. Other extras to Mr Leo Fenders design are an extra string retainer for the A and D string, to make the angle more acute over the nut, this gives a firm seat to the strings, (no possible vibration so strings tension better); Plate that holds neck on is larger with 6 neck bolts (makes neck solid to body to help resonance). Still struggling with the perfect string PING! from the now exhausted Demarzios, thinking of changing them to Jazz pickups made by Knuckles GB. The bass instrument hunt goes on. Hope to set up workshop in Puglia this year. Happy Bass ends up, Richard"

He's great (Relayer is my favourite), but in the ultimate prog album cover showdown, Hipgnosis wins.
i think you need one when using a Jazz bass with a volume for each pickup, otherwise you can't turn up or down without changing your sound
Very good point about Jazz bass volume. I use Ernie Ball VP Jrs in my set up, it makes a lot of sense as both a Jazz player and being in a line-up with a lot of voices (guitar, sax, trumpet, keys, drums) and having fade-ins and -outs. Volume swells are a nice-to-have as well. I've heard of a couple of others which would be of interest to me if I upgrade in future: the Dunlop Volume X can double as an expression pedal as well (I've persuaded a VP Jr to act as an expression pedal but it's ugly cable-wise), and the Visual Sound Visual Volume pedal comes with an array of LEDs to show how loud you are - handy if you need to play at 11 for a certain song for example, http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifiers-effects/visual-sound-visual-volume-pedal

TC Ditto X2 has stereo ins and outs, and loops can be stored to PC or Mac directly via USB cable. Score 1.5 out 2.

My band does a version of John McLaughlin's "Follow Your Heart". There's a smokin version (that introduced me to Kai) on the Mahavishnu tribute album "Visions of an Inner Mounting Apocalypse" with Kai, John Abercrombie, Vinnie Colaiuta and assorted other jazz blokes. Kai takes a solo and as the tune is in 11/8 it gets outside pretty sharpish. Great stuff. I'd link to it if I could find a version online!

Oh I quite like them. Never played one mind you.

Get it agreed that you take it in turns to write the setlist. If they make any funny business about that or mess about with the set on your night, sling your hook.

Setlist nerds might like to pore over the info at http://www.setlist.fm/setlists/snarky-puppy-5bd50f10.html to compare sets from the current tour. Also, downloads of the shows will be available at http://www.livedownloads.com/live-music/3,1017/Snarky-Puppy-mp3-flac-downloads.html - ML said at Hammersmith "about a week later".

We've got one band supporting us tonight, The Motherfunkers are on stage at 7.30pm for an hour - then VP asap after 9pm for a full set.
I got the feeling there was a musical appreciation of them, not wishing to do down audiences in Bristol or elsewhere, perhaps your answer is nearer the mark. Was it a Bristol Uni music dept night out?
No idea, but it was a similarly young crowd at the Hammersmith Apollo last night (and previous SP gigs I've been to)

Steve Lawson & Jonas Hellborg: Vortex Jazz Club, London. Mon 5th Oct

Gutted I couldn't make this. Turns out that due to a calendar error I was trundling through the French countryside on the Eurostar instead of at the Vortex. More of the same but different soon please! -
Just back from watching sell out performance of Snarkies. Since when did bands like this sell out venues? Great for the band, but took me by surprise. A predominantly young audience getting into instrumental jazz influenced funk, applauding flugelhorn and percussion solos. Having a Bristol audience getting into any live performance without a deck is surprising, but cheering muso chops. Wtf. Don't get me wrong. Love my jazz, fusion and funk...but if someone can explain please?
Snarky are hugely into promoting music education when on tour, so they'll do clinics and shows for music schools etc in the area where they're gigging. Smart move.
Working full time and with young kids I find it hard to dedicate as much time as I would like to practising the songs for my covers band. I have now taken to lying in bed at night reciting the words in my head to the songs I sing lead vox on and picturing the bass lines on an imaginary fretboard. Anyone else do this? At least it's a good way of sending me to sleep.
Do you use sheet music?

bands required for regular SW London jazz night
toneknob replied to toneknob's topic in General Discussion
Bump bump for a refreshed announcement for bands who want to play at Velcro Pelmet's jazz/fusion/generally eclectic night at the Tooting Tram & Social, usually the first Sunday of the month, sometimes the second (like the upcoming one). See my recent posts in the BassChat "Gigs" section for more info, and our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/VelcroPelmet for more general gist. It's a paid gig, there's good kit at the venue, soundman provided and paid for, and they serve nice beer. Drop me a PM for details or if you're interested. -
Our next Sunday night Fixture has just been confirmed: straying from our usual "first sunday" rule, this time it's Sunday October 11th, as usual at the Tooting Tram & Social, just round the corner from Tooting Broadway tube station, SW17. We'll be rolling out some new material again this time, including one or two Velcro Pelmet originals. More details to follow, including stage times and support acts, closer to the date. Doors as always at 7pm.
Wow that sounds just up my street musically, give me a shout if you are gigging up in the Midlands area.
Thanks! Will do. I think the furthest north we've played in New Cross, but you never know!

Just came across this recording from the Fillmore West, San Francisco, April 24, 1969. It's like someone turned the bass and drums up and the vocals down a bit just for us. This is what Celebration Day should sound like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAW4OGoLxkQ
