1. Check out Colonel Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit's first self-titled and live album. It's on spotify ... https://open.spotify.com/album/32l3J1s8bRTQqEACQjdEfx
2. Should I stay or should I go? If I go there will be trouble, and if I stay it will be double. (sounds like "go" is the slightly preferable option then tbh)
3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDMvN45sjo4 Woo, fireworks
4.
Graham worked on my '62 Refin P. Very decent bloke.
Yeah. He sorted out the unplayable 8-string neck on a Shergold double-neck for me as well. Lovely little workshop he's got down there. Don't think I've ever seen him outside it.
5. It's D major. There's no need to shoehorn passing notes or chords into the overall tonality of the song.
6.
Greenslade were major prog!!!
Greenslade's album "The Pentatech of the Cosmogeny" came in a double vinyl box set with accompanying hardback book. From wikipedia "The story and artwork within 'Pentateuch' concerns the discovery of an abandoned spacecraft in orbit around Jupiter, and the project to decipher the ideograms in the pentateuch 'document' discovered within. Most of the book is a retelling of the document, in much the same way as a modern translator might retell the contents of a Babylonian tablet or Egyptian papyrus scroll. Particularly remarkable is the combinatorial ideographic script created by Woodroffe and used throughout the artwork". A selection of song titles from the album includes Birds & Bats & Dragonflies, Fresco/Kashrinn, Vivat Regina, Miasma Generator. I think we can include Greenslade as prog! That's something else not mentioned so far in the "but is it prog?" debate - packaging. What other examples of packaging excess are there in the genre? Both Yes and ELP did triple live albums, for example: Yessongs and WBMFTTSTNE...L&GEL&P
7.
Good stuff folks, glad it all worked out!
Expect a deluge of "now how the heck do I do ...." type questions from now on
8. Wow, thanks for the tip - this has just made a huge difference to another beginner Quad Capture user. Nice one!
9.
I don't think that anyone has mentioned The Yes Album yet? My favourite, probably because it isn't 'too proggy'!
Perpetual Change, Starship Trooper and YIND are among my top Yes songs. Shame that All Good People quickly outstays its welcome and lets the side down a bit.
10.
I was thinking as I was driving to work this morning. Hardly any mention for the other Canterbury Scene bands: National Health, Hatfield and the North, Egg, Matching Mole etc. I struggled with some of them at the time because I probably wasn't ready for it but I quite liked National Health and Hatfield and the North (The Rotters Club). I kind of thik of some of the as Jazz Rock (Soft Machine?) rather than Prog but I think there are blurred lines with these guys.
Hatfield are great, there's been a few "archive" releases since their first two albums. Hatwise Choice and Hattitude have some gems on them but can go on a bit. More recently live album/DVD Access All Areas is a cracker. I never really "got" Soft Machine, but have enjoyed their renaissance gigs as Soft Machine Legacy - it was great to see Hugh Hopper before he left us. For an up to date Canterbury sound, have a listen to Syd Arthur, their first album On And On is recommended.
11.
The gated snare drum sound has it's origins in Peter Gabriel's 3rd album from 1980.
Yep, from Intruder. (Hence my earlier "Blame Phil Collins" mention).
12. Did anyone say the McDonald & Giles album yet? Essential for early Crim fans.
13. Yes - Relayer (and Yesshows, much better than Yessongs) A Formal Horse - first EP (70s crim with a female singer) Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused To Sing Caravan - In The Land Of Grey And Pink (none more "English" than this Bilbo) Camel - The Snow Goose 801 - Live (Eno, Manzarek, Simon Phillips, Bill McCormick, Francis Monkman) Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute Änglagård - Prog på Svenska: Live in Japan Knifeworld - The Unravelling Diagonal - The Second Mechanism Comus - First Utterance Magma - Mëkanïk Dëstruktïw Kömmandöh That should keep you going!
14. Another favourite of mine. Would you consider this to be a "solo"? (same goes for The Fish by Chris Squire). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RunHx-LTgo
15. Yes I like a good bass solo. Some are great. Some aren't. Same goes for guitar, keys, drums, etc solos. Here's one of my favourites, seeing as someone mentioned Alain Caron (solo about 1m20s in) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QD9y8fw9l8
16. Doesn't the Minitaur store its own user presets?
17. Dude you're on a Hollies forum.
18.
It's taken a while to get this done due to various issues around the sound files we had from this gig. The recording was very much just for posterity and not intended to be used by us for any sort of promotional effort, but it turned out so well we thought we would have a tinker around with it to see how good we could get it. Anyone familiar with the Bowie catalogue will know that this song has been performed in various guises over the years. Our version is a heavy nod towards the BBC gig from 2000. Given that it was our very first gig, I'm fairly chuffed with it. More songs in due course. https://soundcloud.c...rren-byatt/stay
Very good! Especially like the line "that's what I meant to say or do something", you probably know what I mean. (Great playing as well of course) How did you record it btw?
19. Last time that happened to me, soundman was mortified and apologised for not cutting the signal to the PA. Mind you I had been to bar, picked up pint ordered via stooge (using the universally recognised signal for "for heavens sake get me a drink before last orders is called"), swapped various small talk with audients, and returned to the stage to pack up.
20.
I'd second Boys Keep Swinging. Theres a lot happening bass-wise, especially at the close.
Yeah! Not bad for a drummer.
21. Here's a pic of my ex Shergold 4/8-string (and another of the one I posted earlier) - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/136439-shergold-basses/page__view__findpost__p__1235025 The 4/8 is now sold on via Wunjo to another happy twin-necker.
22. Found a couple of mine. I'm concentrating really hard in the second one. I never had too much trouble with the weight - get your posture, strap length and guitar positioning sorted early on and it becomes second nature. As you can see these were taken in 2007, it might be a different story if I tried it now.
23.
Ah yes, the desperate rush to escape before the National Anthem.
Oh I don't know, it's my favourite Radiohead song
24.
For a laugh there's always 'Love Stinks' by the J Geils band and D.I.V.O.R.C.E by Tammy Wynette. OK, maybe not.
Thanks - in addition to the playlists mentioned in my post above, I also made an "anti-love song" playlist for when I got fed up of the lovey-dovey wedding stuff. I've added your two to it - it's here https://open.spotify.com/user/toneknob/playlist/7jEg3Myw6qvm21DTeiERNP
25. A Roland Micro Cube, so 2W. And a Roland JC-50, at of course 50W. The former gets much more use.
