1.
Brian Cant.
but Val Doonican
2.
Velcro Pelmet is possibly the greatest band name ever
Thanks! (I wouldn't go as far as "ever" though...!)
3.
A little of each to be honest
I'll let him know! He's a bit of a Zappa fan tbh, (see moustache). And looks more like Joe Zawinul. Confused? I usually am.
4. Thanks! (are you going by his looks or his sound btw?)
5. Hi, My band Velcro Pelmet have two London gigs coming up very soon; one in Southwark, the other in Tottenham. We'll be doing our selection of originals and standards from the genre at both. Hope to see you at one or the other! Saturday May 20th The Union Jack in Southwark (225 Union St, London SE1 0LR - very close to Southwark tube and handy for both London Bridge and Waterloo) 8pm start free admission facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/123867038176779/ Wednesday May 24th Smooth Jazz Lounge at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre (Town Hall Approach Rd, London N15 4RX - not far from Seven Sisters, Tottenham Hale, Bruce Grove etc) 9pm start free admission "with a drink" facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1322022687881586/ You can hear what we sound like at https://velcropelmet.com/music but watch out for the autoplay!
6. You don't want to get any inconvenient cables getting in the way like this amateur http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jPW0XWuo6g
7.
Maybe I had the advantage of never having heard any of the extracts before, with no idea whatsoever as to who it was playing. Yup, an innocent Candide, that's me.
yes but by the time you've heard it 4 or 5 times, during the course of the survey, you know what it's going to be.
8.
I have the dots for Mayer's Who Did You Think I Was and Pino makes it all look far too easy
Can you send me a copy?
9.
I'm not certain, but it seemed to me to be much like the football league, where each extract has to be pitted against each of the others. As, then, there are eight samples, each has to be played seven times (once against each of the others...), so twenty-eight plays in all. A 'league table' can then be drawn up, which would give some idea of 'difficulty'. May be wrong, though.
Oh yes, totally agree. It's just that in each "fixture" you HAVE to listen to all of Sting and all of Flea (or whoever it is) every time, even though we know Flea is "harder" than Sting. Once you've heard a few notes of the Seven Days line, you know what it's going to be.
10. Done and emailed! With only a relatively limited number of samples it'd be good if you only had to listen to each clip in its entirety once rather than every single trial. We know it's say Sting vs Flea (or whoever) in the first few seconds listen, so no need to hear the clip all the way to the end (unless it's a part of The Science that I don't appreciate from this end)
11.
What if it turns out that we are all Clown-whores?
There's nothing wrong with being sexy
12.
I saw them last night at The Lighthouse in Poole, which is an INCREDIBLE theatre/concert hall! The sound was superb. Snarky were as incredible as ever, the last time I saw them was in Brighton about 18 months ago and they have changed their live approach a touch, well more of a refinement. They were less improvisational than before, and mostly kept songs to the album versions. I see no one has really mentioned the support band House of Waters, who were utterly incredible! Very clever trio, with the bass playing the lead melodic role, they're well worth a listen!
Just reading up on HoW, having missed them at Brixton. "Hendrix of the hammered dulcimer" says the bio on their website, which are words I wasn't expecting to see in the same sentence today. I'll have a go with their latest album. What suprised me at Brixton was the sound quality, best I've heard there for ages.
13.
There used to be on off Putney high st, can't remember the name though.
Ritz, or RMS?
14. You've got Unit 9 in Balham, Brixton Hill Studios, and Tone Hound at Clapham Junction. Also Pirate Studios in Earlsfield but that's maybe a bit off piste for you. All ok, you get what you pay for I find. I'd happily go to any of the above again.
15. yeah, exemplified by Mirage by Camel, anything by Oasis or the Stones and this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NclgjiuCr-8
16.
For many many years I've been using my index, middle and ring finger to play. Often its my index and ring finger. Initially i moved to this as a kid because Billy Sheehan had that shred thing going on. As time went on i realised my index and ring finger are the same length so my playing style was much straighter/flatter than my index and middle finger, which as my middle finger is about 10mm longer, meant i had to place my hand at quite an angle to play consistently with my index and middle finger. Ive found that using index and ring finger means my middle finger is free and poised to move to the next string really quickly. Any one else experienced this or uses this technique? ( please someone say yes or ill have to leave BS)
Kinda! I use index and middle for alternate plucking, while ring mutes the next higher-pitched string (and thumb mutes the next lower string, or is anchored on the pickup or elsewhere). When moving up a string (eg A to D) the ring finger (already resting on the D string) makes the first pluck, then index and middle subsequently take over alternate plucking, and thumb comes to rest on the A string. If descending a string (eg D to A), just rake from the index or middle plucker and shift the whole shape down.
17.
I'll be at the Brixton gig too. Any more for that one?
Yep, but thanks to a double-booking cock-up I'll be a late arrival. Managed to get a ticket for the Steve Reich show at the RFH on the same night (Colin Currie ensemble playing Drumming and Tellehim), which I'm assuming will be an early enough finish to catch most of Snarky. How's that for a contrasting evening though.
18. Here's a pretty cool Morris dancing video. An ex-colleague is one of the side, he's the one in the hat and bells. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqVYDRM842s (I really like the straw man)
19. What was the setlist? I thought The Astonishing was terrible, sorry to say. I really liked them way back when. Awake is brilliant. I saw them at the Forum/Town & Country Club on that tour, again a bit later when they did all of Iron Maiden's Number Of The Beast at the Astoria as is their wont when playing multiple nights at the same place.
20. I love records, but have given up on RSD. Every day should be Record Shop/Store Day: http://thequietus.com/articles/19946-record-store-day-2016-shops-bad-reissues-bleugh
21. Akai Deep Impact synth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEaUz-wyjEU
22. Has anyone seen any of Thundercat's current UK shows? Wondering if this made an appearance...
23. From Saturday night's gig, this is the small version, deployed in a Diago case rather than the Pedaltrain board: I found myself quickly wanting after the "from below" power cable access of the Pedaltrain. Signal flow is TC Electronic PolyTune, Ernie Ball 105Q wah, Analogman Bi-Comp, Darkglass Harmonic Booster, MXR Bass Octave Deluxe, Mooer Bass Sweeper, Crowther Prunes & Custard, MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe, MXR Phase 99, Ernie Ball volume pedal. Also, nice carpet.
24. Once In A Lifetime Walking On The Moon Theme from "Jaws"
25. That should say 8pm of course Also, 100% free to get in! Come and say hi if you're around.
