Sure sign of GAS - inventing a new category of playing context for which to require a new bass: live - check, recording - check, ah 'jam nights!' Need a JD.. and what about... 'Fretless jam nights!? You need to get that sorted pretty quick too. Don't forget the classic general purpose 'beater' but I guess your road-worn fulfills that category. 'FRETLESS BEATER!' (Sorry bass Tourettes)

What gear exceeded expectations for you?

I'll contribute with my Two Notes Le Bass pre-amp. Does a musical crunch but the surprise was the articulate clean sound. Adds such a lyrical fingerstyle tone across lows, mids, highs and super-highs, it makes playing dynamics a pleasure... -
Here's a promising Rick upgrade as an example... Go with Johnny... he's erm, 'enthusiastic' but I'm liking these appointments...

Really! You put a Gibson Grabber pick-up in a Rick!? Erm OK... I haven't heard it so can't comment on the sound but it appears to be an unusual approach... There are lots of resources on the Net for de-crapifying your RIck whilst enhancing the sacred Rick-o-Tone clank. Please tell me you're not going to set a Hofner neck in there too to complete your Frankenrickengibbon?

Not me but I'd be interested to hear too. Pretty rare birds these. I thought of them as sort of Eastern take on 80s/90s boutique basses like some of the top-scale Ibanez basses...?

Agree with the sentiment and this near spiritual quest has been undertaken by many on the 'Effects' forum. with many practical examples of how to achieve this without massive investment - latest contender in a long line being the Tech21 dUg pedal causing great excitement. I'll cite Chris Squire as my tone ambassador in this area...

Basschatters, Not sure if you've been following the development of Joe's signature Warwick? Well here it is and it looks great - probably very expensive but great... Here's Joe's unboxing video:

Erm... where did we land on this... Ultimate rock bass has got to deliver for the OP... Spend half my life (literally) listening to Chris Squire and Geddy making this sound awesome... despite all the flaws. P.S. may have to bi-amp and crunch the stinky poo out of the high end...

Ok cool not seen that before. Love a P-bass. Takes some effort to tame that forkiness but truly the standard by which all others are judged. If you can sound good on this...

No one going to comment on that weird fret diagram at the end of the OP... sort of multiscale but not in a way I've seen before...??? How does this feature on your bass? Does it sound better?

Mods, Why do we bother with 'Off Topic', 'Bass Guitars', 'Effects' & 'Theory & Technique' when people routinely hose their womble-butter at 'General Discussion'. Seriously, are we not monitoring and moving anymore? We need strict discipline in this area. Stabbin's too good for them. Please draw blood. playing with a pick is faster - fact or fiction?
visog replied to lowdowner's topic in General Discussion
Anywho, the OP asked, "playing with a pick is faster, fact or fiction?" I'd say depends: on the melodic or harmonic activity being executed by the left hand. If you keep on a single note, it would probably be pick with some savant spasm'ing their wrist to execute a ridiculous buzz. If you're talking sophisticated lines and harmony, fingers as you'd be hard-pressed to beat this: -
Nah... a little bit obviously but the main factor will always be the day-rates of the luthiers involved and what price they can charge based on demand. A luthier with an 18 month waiting list will charge more than one with half that.

Saw Hiromi with Stanley at Ronnie Scott's - good gig. (The awesome Nigel Price supporting.) Anywho, I don't think the main discourse is comparing apples with apples. So I get the points about sub-£g basses but perfectly good - which they are these days. (For the record, I don't think MM 'fights' his Sire's in the vids I've seen.) But Fodera seem like a small specialist company loyal to their clientele, including Victor, but also AJ. It's a smart move too as AJ is the bassist's bassist and I think we're all in awe so building him exactly what he needs means a Fodera is in the hands of the bassist we, and many named professionals look to. It's not optimised for mass production like our sub-£g's are so reproducing them is time-consuming exercise from a dedicated team of luthiers. Got no problem rationalising the cost of this against, say a Sire. Both good but fulfilling different purposes. And in a perennially made point, £10k or even £20k for a pre-eminent instrument is peanuts in the classical world. I wouldn't do justice to a Fodera AJ and I'd be terrified off dinging it so I don't lust after one but I'm sort of glad they're a thing.

I'm no metal fan but that looks a whole ton of fun for under £400 shnoots. These days you can get so much for your money bass-wise.
-
Everyone - let's not confuse 'Rock' with 'good' music. Plenty of good music post-71 but not necessarily Daltrey's' Rock' which will be a pretty narrow and and closed term relating to Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Elvis et al.
-
Christ you guys are going to struggle if we have an 'R&B' thread.
-
Pretty much none of those are 'Rock' as per the OP or they're just bad... Punk is not rock - sorry. Borrowed the motifs, had the attitude but no - something else entirely. Heavy Metal definitely isn't. Peter Frampton? Are you mad? Are people being deliberately ignorant on this thread.
-
Well it sounds like you're well informed but give AB9 something to work on... And, in fairness, you say your condition affects second joints, toes and hips shoulders which sort of reinforces my point...
-
Oh sorry - me again. Get to the gym too. Light exercise across your extremities and working of the core all good supportive activity. Not sure anyone's mentioned thus far going right back to basics on posture with your bass, making sure you're back's straight and your wrists aren't overly vexed. May have to relearn bass in new position but that's doable right!? Check bass not trapping shoulder nerves either.

This. 'Early onset arthritis' used as a bit of a catch-all by well-meaning but hard time-pressed NHS staff. May take a bit of work and releasing of bad diets, drink and ahem other bad habits (smoking and other things...) but could work for you in the long-term. I'm no doctor but the fact that your other joints aren't affected is weird as you use your hips for example, all the time, not just with a bass in hand. Get ready for a purge... Hope it works for you.

So you why have you asked Basschat this question? Have you spammed Lawnmower Chat too? Get Google and leave us to dwindle in disgruntled silence. Mods: curse to 'Off Topic' obscurity please
