I like a nice clean punchy tone, and I heartily recommend the use of 3 fingers (a la Mr Sheehan) to achieve speed. Harmonically it's pretty straightforward, following the guitar most of the time and filling in around them when they go off on a twin lead odyssey. I also get to do the odd tapping break, and I quite enjoy doubling lead guitar lines (sweeps etc). You can check it out at the link in my sig.

That seems to be around the going rate for a bass whammy- they're not made any more and the bass model seems somewhat sought after. I think it has some harmony modes that aren't on the red versions.

I'd suggest keeping an eye on the classifieds at Talkbass.com- if you can find a seller who doesn't mind shipping you might be able to get an even better deal.

Is there much you can do on as Stick that you can't do on an extended range bass?

Basslab make a headphone amp that can be fitted internally, although I think it requires an extra hole to be drilled for another jack. Go to www.basslab.de and click on electronics-->bassxx head.

Devin Townsend- not a bassist but a master producer as well as an all round wierdo genius/guitar hero.

Trace Elliot- never gotten a tone I liked out of one. Same for Ashdown. Stupidly big and heavy rigs- size isn't everything guys.

+1 for the Violin Shop- they have a good range of basses and bows, as well as accessories, and are pretty happy to let you try stuff out.
