  2. Hi all, selling my Dingwall Combustion 5 has never been gigged in mint condition, just used at home and for recording at home, as much as i love it circumstances have changed and unfortunately it needs to go to a good home, it will come with the padded gig bag, pau ferro fretboard, ideally would be collection or can meet halfway if sensible, any questions please feel free to ask The Combustion succeeds in providing the ultimate combination of tone, performance and value, making it perfect for both stage and studio work. Thanks to our hybrid manufacturing approach, each bass receives a final fret level and set up by our skilled team of artisans in Canada, which means you can enjoy the cutting-edge benefits of the Dingwall Custom Shop at a more affordable price. Select from a left or right-handed model, Maple or Pau Ferro, 4-, 5- or 6-strings, with or without a pickguard and choose from a range of available of finishes, including Natural Ash, 2-Tone Blackburst, Vintageburst, Indigoburst, Whalepoolburst, and Ultraviolet. BODY & NECK The body is swamp ash and modelled on our Custom Shop Afterburner. It’s compact and lightweight, making for a bass that’s comfortable to wear and beautifully balanced. The five-piece maple neck is securely attached via four bolts, and the fingerboard employs Ralph Novak’s fanned-fret system and a 34–37-inch scale spread (the scale length of the B-string is three inches longer than the G), with a 240mm fretboard radius, making it superfast over a full two octaves. “We’re happy to report that the Combustion is well deserving of the Dingwall reputation. It’s built to last, with plenty of bounce, vibrancy and great sustain, all you would want from a five-string bass. We can’t recommend it highly enough – this is why so many bassists are adopting these instruments into their bass arsenals. Buy with confidence!” BASS GUITAR MAGAZINE PICKUPS & ELECTRONICS The Combustion comes fitted with Dingwall FD3n pickups that are made to our exacting specifications using neodymium magnets, which offer both high output and a smooth, but aggressive tone. They’re wired to a 3-band preamp, along with a 4-position Quad-tone pickup selector, master volume and an active/passive toggle switch. “The Quad-Tone pickup selector gave me quick access to several distinct flavors. In passive mode, the soloed neck and bridge pickups were old-school and vintage, the bridge /middle pickup combo was fat and focused, and the bridge/neck sound was loud and growly. Changing right-hand position gave me lots of variations on those themes, but switching on the preamp brought each pickup to life and showed me several new colors.” BASS MAGAZINE HARDWARE The Dingwall bridge started with an available bridge/saddle system that met our requirements for solid performance and great tone. We then improved on it by designing a custom riser system to provide an increased range of flexibility when it comes to adjusting the action. The headstock is home to the lightest import tuners we could find. We collaborated with Hipshot to modify their Ultra-lite tuners, which resulted in a shorter tuning peg that allows a proper downward angle at the nut for maximum sustain and improved stability. Dingwall Strings Dingwall strings have been meticulously tested to maximize performance and deliver a tone that blends effortlessly with any style of music. We were the first company to design strings specifically for multi-scale instruments. Available in both nickel and stainless steel, our strings provide an even tension for optimal balance, letting you experience the warmest highs and the tightest lows possible. Note: basses are shipped with Dingwall Nickel Strings as standard. 4. These are Aurora strings, 40-100
  5. @Chienmortbb @Pow_22 Thanks for the information. With all the talk of valve tone and the thump of class A/B power amps and the heft - there, I said it 😱 - that you get from old school amp designs like this, coupled with what I think is pretty much a give away price, I'm surprised this is still hanging around. Someone somewhere mentioned that this series of amps wasn't particularly desirable but given that they doesn't suffer from the wooly sound some folks complain of with Ashdown amps I think they're an underrated gem. But as I gig almost exclusively on IEMs these days and have a light weight amp and cab for the occasional dep gig with backline, this is sadly in the way and needs to go to a new loving home.
  6. Really don’t need 3 FIs and would like to contribute some of the sale funds to @lee650’s fundraiser; come on folks, someone must want this beauty!
  7. I actually prefer a direct sale, but it always depends. Maybe you can send me your ideas via pm.

  9. Best amp I’ve ever played. Can’t afford, probably don’t need, but boy I wish I could get it! GLWS
  10. Thanks for that, but I'm after something a little longer (matron!)
  11. I have one of these and they really are excellent! Si
  12. Sometimes a screw or nail is used in the neck pocket when a body is being refinished on the rear part; they likely would have used an existing screw hole by the bridge as well, but the existing neck pocket screws are large, hence the new hole.

  20. Our drummer was ill so she couldn't make it, but the keyboard/singer and I went ahead. Went over most of the existing songs and I realised I should have done more practicing while we've not been rehearsing, and also did a couple of run-throughs of two new songs, one of which he'd written years ago and the other that he'd just written. Both went pretty well, which was nice.
  21. This one has been a long time coming. I first started to desire a Deluxe/Elite/Ultra when I played one shortly after the 2012 model launched. Then the Elite launched in 2016 and that had to be the one. This decision was cemented further when the Ultra 2 came out in the last year or so with its cost-saving 'skunk stripe' neck. Spec wise. the natural Ash Elite always seemed to be the pick of the bunch. So I recently bought Freddie's Elite from the BC Marketplace - he did a very good job of very carefully repairing the drill damage [from a previous owner where a bridge cover had been added] with wood filler, so the holes aren't nearly as visible now. Playing-wise, this Elite is a monster Jazz. The preamp only needs a slight touch over the centre detent on the treble/bass controls to be perfectly punchy. It has all the tone of my 2012 FSR hand-stained American Standard with a lot more power behind it. I'm impressed. So I've set it up to my tastes and added some new 40-95 Elixirs. Enjoy the pics
  22. The excellent FEA OptiFET Bass Compressor. In excellent condition. Now discontinued and becoming super collectible and rightly so! This is an excellent compressor and deserves some love, price includes UK postage. The Info/bumpf The FEA Opti-FET Compressor is designed with both audiophile and studio quality features that many musicians enjoy. The new audio path has been redesigned with the FEA 3S output amplifier circuit for warm tone and excellent noise rejection that features a “class A” FET output driver. The 3S amplifier utilizes an audiophile grade Texas Instruments™ (formerly Burr-Brown™) SoundPlus™ operational amplifier and a class-A Fairfield™ FET driver for outstanding performance. The operational and FET driver amplifiers are integrated in a unique way to take advantage of the favorable qualities of both types of amplification. This 3S amplifier has selectable modes of operation for a clean or warm tone. The warm tone mode was modeled to match the tone of the original OPTI-FET circuit. The input stage is a high impedance CMOS, hi-fi amplifier buffer with internal RFI protection. The input amplifier has been designed to have minimal signal distortion and noise, with maximum headroom for all input signal levels. Another feature in the FEA OPTI-FET Compressor is the extensive side-chain control which is not commonly found in most pedal type compressors today. Like many quality studio rack compressors, the OPTI-FET compressor has all of the common controls available to the user to accurately shape his or her tone. Along with the full feature set of side-chain controls, a three band equalizer is available. This EQ only affects the amplitude of frequencies of the signal in the compressor control circuits. This EQ allows the user to modify the threshold setting by frequency band. The OPTI-FET compressor also has a side-chain loop feature, similar to many rack compressors. This allows the user to be more creative with the use of other outboard pedals. Multi-band EQ, or buffered volume pedals are a few that can make this pedal even more versatile when used in the side-chain loop. FEATURES: Small footprint – 4 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches THRESHOLD, RATIO, ATTACK, RELEASE and GAIN controls. The control ranges for the ATTACK and RELEASE have been optimized for use on both bass and guitar. The compressor exhibits soft-knee compression at lower RATIO settings and hard-knee at maximum RATIO settings. The COMP LED indicates when the THRESHOLD has been reached. This LED does not indicate the RELEASE response. The compressor side-chain utilizes precision full-wave rectification of the audio signals in the THRESHOLD circuit for accurate envelope tracking. This also reduces the possibility of “pumping” with very low frequencies. ACTIVATE foot switch places the compressor unit in the signal chain or in Direct Bypass mode. In Direct Bypass mode the signal at the input is directly connected to the output and does not pass through any electronics. EQUALIZER foot switch enables the three band equalizer controls for the side-chain control circuit. The three band EQ only affects the amplitude of frequencies of the signal in the side-chain control circuit to modify threshold sensitivity by frequency band. LOOP SEND/RETURN jacks are for placing external processors or EQ’s in the compressor side-chain control circuit. These jacks are only active when the EQUALIZER foot switch is enabled. Internal DIP switches to select the output amplifier mode of operation. The three modes are clean (SW 1&2 off), warm 1 (SW 1 on) and warm 2 (SW 2 on). The warm 2 mode adds a subtle amount more of the dynamic harmonics of mode 1. Internal DIP switch for a 12KHz filter for an ‘old school’ tone or to reduce the hiss from pedals proceeding the compressor. The audio signal compression is accomplished with only a resistive component (Light Dependent Resistor or Photocell). All resistors in the circuit are low noise metal film type. The audio signal coupling capacitors are tight tolerance, quiet, multi-layer and metallized polyester film type. The transistors utilized in the audio signal path are popular low noise audiophile grade devices. The power supplies onboard voltage charge pump allows the circuitry to operate at 18volts (+9 and –9 volt rails) from a single 9-volt battery or DC power adapter. This allows the audio signal plenty of headroom from active electronic guitars and aggressive playing techniques (i.e. pop and slap). The “switch on” power supply current is less than 1µA (micro amp) on the signal ground at the INPUT jack. This is approximately 45,000 times (-93dB) less than the commonly used method of connecting the battery’s negative terminal to ground via the sleeve of the plug inserted into the INPUT jack. The “switch on” sensing method used in the FEA OPTI-FET Compressor keeps nearly all of the circuit’s generated white noise and transient currents out of the INPUT stage signal ground. Extreme measures have been taken to keep the power and signal paths as clean as possible.

  23. I thought the tar-like stuff might be the foam but didn't think it be so unrecognisable in consistency. With the location, etc it makes sense though. Despite how it might look in the photos, the finish is still really solid and smooth to touch. I was a bit surprised. If it has been refinished or varnished it's been done in a fairly professional way. In terms of the mystery repair plug in the neck pocket. There are no signs of a hole on the other side, so bit of a mystery. I'm liking the info about the pickups - thanks @bloke_zero I'm also pretty lazy so if they sound good and might not be too much hassle I might well leave them for a while too!
