Heresy! It's well known that amplifiers must not have any sort of time controls, as this interferes with the Ultimate Goal, which is High Fidelity, or absolutely accurate reproduction of the original... 😁 I find that the best way to bring out the bass, is to have a large amp and speakers with decent low end extension, but if that's not an option get a graphic equaliser, as there's more control over other affected frequencies. Second best is something like my work Sansui amp, it's got a loudness button and 6 band graphic. Though I rarely use either as it sounds artificial and thumpy, apart from at very low level.

Thanks and sorry for the confusion but that’s how I’ve got it set up. The issue is that it’s easy to hit the tiny preset button (next to the four red/green LEDs) when using the main foot switch as an engage/bypass switch. I just need to work on my foot technique!

I'm not sure that I understand the difference, unless one is playing into an oscilloscope for measuring. All that counts is what is perceived, I'd say. The end result of any active or passive system is that any change of one element affects the whole, as for as human hearing is concerned. Peace.

It looks and sounds great, I'd love one... but from Lobster's review it seems that again Fender are specifically prohibiting them from being sold or shipped outside Japan? Absolutely insane decision, I want to spend my money on their product but they've arbitrarily decided they're not going to sell it to me because of where I live. I honestly don't get it.

On The Road Again - Willie

I've been a gigging bass player for about 50 years, and have generally been ache and pain free in my fingers. Unfortunately, I've recently been getting a sharp pain in the tip of my index finger of my fretting hand when playing. The pain is similar to an electric shock. This is likely some kind of nerve damage, which I'm assuming is temporary and will improve by not playing for a while. Not playing is not an option! Starting 7th Jan I'm back on the road after the Christmas break and have a pretty busy year. My question: Has anyone tried any of the various fingertip protectors for guitarists that are on the market? If so - any recommendations, or those to avoid. I'm hoping that the extra bit of cushioning will reduce the pressure on my finger resulting in less pain. I want to try this option first before seeking professional help. Cheers

Manufactured in large quantities = mass produced. I suspect a few thousand of something would qualify as mass produced. I have no idea in what quantities basses are produced, so I can't help with that. Mark

Struggling to sleep and got thinking about how I’ve never seen the basses I’ve sold on here a decade or longer ago for sale again or even a twin. Some of these are what we would term “mass produced” therefore I never thought them as particularly rare but now I’m wondering if they are. The basses in question: A year 2000 Fender AM DLX Jazz Bass 5 in trans red with a maple board An EB MM 2006 3EQ Stingray in trans teal (was more green than blue) with a maple board A Warwick Thumb NT FL 5 - think it was 2000ish Are production numbers actually lower than we (I) think or is it a coincidence the basses all found happy owners. Anyone else experienced this? PS Wish I had pics!

So many of you will have seen my thread on here entitled, "Do I reeeally need a Precision..?" Well, I ordered this on December 22nd and finally went down to The Bass Gallery in Camden today to get it. Thankfully, with a lot of people still on Christmas holidays, London was relatively quiet and traffic free. I plumped for the new American Professional Classic as it was sonically quite similar to my previous American Professional I, but considerably cheaper than the American Professional II, which doesn't sound anywhere near as good. From the videos I studied, the new Classic with its Pure Vintage series derived 'Coastline' 60s pickups has a very clear upper register and a subtly warm bottom end. I also really like the 'modern C' neck profile. It's very slim [fingers to thumb] for a Precision and the usual modern 9.5" radius/1.625" nut, almost like a '63 neck, minus a little thickness. So after driving all day (went to Bridgewater in Somerset too!), I've only had a little play, and first order of business is always to get those awful stock Fender strings off and put some nice 40-95 Elixirs on instead. Better. After a brief setup, it's a very nice sounding bass. Very easy to play and sounds really nice. Just what I was looking for - a mix of modern and classic. Being as this new series is supposedly the replacement to the long serving American Performer basses (and all the previous incarnations, such as American Special, Highway One, etc), the quality has been upped by a huge amount, bringing these much closer to the Am Pro II. This particular bass is flawless and everything lines up perfectly. The bridge is the same as the ones on the Vintage/Original/Vintage II basses, (which I've never had any issues with on my American Original Jazz in seven years), and the Gotoh Lollipop Tuners and high quality Domed Control Knobs are lovely too. More to come when I give it a good playing tomorrow...
