We have a very good keys player who deps with us, and I make his life as easy as I can. He was particularly pleased that each way on our PA is colour coded, the XLR cables have matching colours and the mics have coloured leccy tape on them. It doesn't make me sing any better, but setting up & taking down is a whole lot easier.

I feel better already, thanks Doc. Going back to my original comment in a less facetious way, It really depends on the bass tbh. I think active basses can really benefit from flats > rounds, as they already push out enough highs etc. My Stingray, for example, really benefits from flats balancing the (pretty over-the-top) mids / highs - it sounds like a bass rather than PING PING ZING PING. I go back to rounds every now and then and they get taken off again after about 20 mins haha. Maybe I'll get a nice passive one day that works well with rounds, I will certainly report back.

I'm sure he appreciates all that you have done for him Steve. My current band has stood by me while I've undergone cancer treatment over the last 4 years, I have to admit that it kept me going through the dark times. I looked to quit but they wouldn't hear of it. I have always stated they should use a dep though to avoid missing a good gig or venue but so far I've generally soldiered on. Maybe one option would be to look at a more part time/smaller scale situation for him to participate in? As said, whatever you decide I'm sure he'll appreciate your friendship and efforts over the years; good luck going forward.

Just to make it even more complicated, you can turn it either clockwise or anticlockwise to go from left to right.

I guess the only major faux pas I can think of is my first bass - because I was too green to think for myself. Bought an Epiphone EB-3 "because Jack Bruce (kinda) plays one". Little did I know that the body shape was doing much of the heavy lifting when it came to direct comparisons between an Epiphone EB-3 and a Gibson EB-3. Needless to say, I don't have it any more. However, it did lead me down a Gibson/Epiphone path of lifting two fingers to conventional norms and wisdom in bass, so I do have that to thank it for. I've never bassed "properly" since! Everything else has been my fuelled by my own personal curiosity - I don't give a flying monkey's toss about herdthink/peer pressure/received wisdom. I trust my own eyes and my own ears.

Thanks again to all the responses - really helped frame my thinking. Following some discussion with @stevie I'm now pleased to say that I've placed an order for the LFSys Monza. I shall report back in due course!

It truly doesn’t matter what instrument you put in Barends hands, it always sound great with him! 😉

Like @Phil Starr, I am the happy owner of an LFSys MONZA. In the early stages of development I tried what is now called the Goodwood. I am sure that will do what you need very well. Contact @stevie, either on here or via LFSys.co.uk. He’ll surely give you good advice.

If you're building effects units then a step drill and preferably a pillar drill are essentials. Also, if you want square or rectangular holes which are fairly large (eg for displays), power files are excellent. Especially if you're better at using them than me.

I was enjoying gigging with my PF50T at the weekend. The PA was a small setup that we used for vocals and flute only, so I had it into the zone where it was just starting to get hairy on the louder sections, always a satisfying place to be. -
