Well, people can make their money however they like but the idea you can "flip" things and consistently make money is just delusional. It's like the idea of businesses that make "passive" income -nonsense. I bought a bass on here just on the basis of feedback from other people. I have no idea about what I'm trying to achieve with my bass paying yet but I thought buying from someone who posts here a lot and said the instrument was well sorted was better than relying on ebay. Business is people selling to other people. Flippers often don't get that.

Go for it - it's rewarding and educational, I learned a lot about microphone design and functionality from the MicParts kits I built (your video there is even-more-DIY!) Also I wasn't trying to discourage the OP from doing a capsule replacement, just that a) it might not be necessary, and b) it's not something I'd attempt on a valuable mic. </derail>

Re electric bikes - yes, what isn't always immediately obvious is that they let you choose how much effort to put in, and you can still put in just as much effort as on a non-electric bike, only you go farther and faster. My observation is that people tend to use them for a wide range of different reasons - to shift a heavier load than you could without (especially a load of kids and their bags etc); to do a longer commute than you'd fancy on a non-electric; to keep on cycling when age, injury or progressive disease might otherwise have stopped you; etc. I think they're really helpful for people to get a bit more exercise and have a bit more fun in daily life. (Total thread derailment but I read the recent reports about the political desire to clamp down on illegal electric bikes for safety reasons, and the desire to make companies like Deliveroo to employ their delivery riders instead of forcing them to work self-employed. It would be great if regulation could instead force delivery companies to provide riders with decent electric scooters rather than leaving them to source their own ramshackle bodge-jobs.) I recently got another bike (non-electric) to use as a round-town cargo-carrier, with front and rear racks, hub gears and so on. I'm now getting a useful amount of extra exercise just in the course of a normal week, because I'll jump on the bike to nip down to Lidl or wherever and grab some shopping rather than driving.

And there's even DIY! I quite fancy making one of these - it wouldn't have to be a usb mic.

I agree with this. I play ukulele acoustically (pickups on ukes should be illegal). I played with a little Behringer at a gig for a friend and it was amazing! Way better than my SM57 and about 1/5 of the price. I know this is not what you asked but if it's something valuable you could probably sell it and buy a complete mic that might even be better.

Totally understand this, and as I said, I'm passing no judgement. I bought a bass here that was much lower than the shop value. When I decided to sell it I messaged the seller and explained it was valued by a shop for much higher. He shared your view and didn't want any extra cash because he was happy with the deal. Bowspeed are an incredible business. Not many like it left in the world. I'm due a visit soon...

Your mic might just need servicing, and the symptoms you describe could also be a preamp issue (i.e. the preamp board in the mic, not an external preamp). Capsules don't really wear out unless they've been physically damaged or anything strange has happened like being stored in a damp environment. Dust and grime can build up eventually if they've had a long service life. Capsule cleaning is a specialist job best carried out by the original manufacturer or a professional. With those caveats - I've built a couple of microphone kits from the same guy who makes Roswell mics, and I'd have no issues using his replacement capsules. All good quality stuff. I'd have a go if it was an inexpensive and replaceable mic, but I'm not about to fiddle with any Neumanns 🙂

I have very extreme relationships with everything. I used to ride bikes to the level where I believe it was unhealthy. I had a resting heart rate of 43 and rode 300+ miles a week. I would routinely drop 16 year olds on mopeds. It took over my life. I fell out of it after a crash, then a summer of booze and depression. I have a much better relationship with excercise now, and I'm mostly off the booze. Just do the right thing 75% of the time and you're ok. I really love my electric bike. There are impressive hills in the peaks - you still have to excercise with the ebike but it effectively levels the hills. I still get a workout, but I'm not knackered. It was a kit that cost about £500. I genuinely believe electric bikes are one of the best inventions of this century. Add to that gardening and a bit of yoga. I used to do a lot of walking but my dog is now really old and walking isn't the same without a dog. In the future there will be another dog so hiking will be back in.

Def the Fender. Even though the general sound of the Yam is what I aim for I prefer to sculpt/remove from the warmer more rounded Fender sound, figuring I can remove what is there to whatever degree needed, but can’t add what isn’t there in the first place. When I have the Fender as I want it it still retains an overall warmth which the Yam lacks. Sorry, re-reading this I’d say completely unaltered then the Yam is my preferred type of sound, though I do find it can feel a bit “sterile” if that makes any sense?

Firstly, sorry for the loss of your cousin, that is terrible that it was so short. I agree with everything you said, but would add the caveat that it can also be the opposite scenarios.

What mic is it..? With the quality of many current new mic's being so good, is the replacement justified..? If it's a quality mic from a Big Name, a replacement from the factory might be the best bet, but a new Superlux starts at £30. Not an option..?

So do you have a preference between the natural sound of the two? I understand the Fender will probably be the more familiar sounding of the two but if you could only pick one based on personal preference?

Point of order, not all COPD is self inflicted.

I find the difference between my Fender Precision and my Yamaha BB1100s is that the P pickup soloed on the Yam sounds like the Fender after it`s had a bit of eq or compression applied, a bit crisper on the highs and less in the low mids/tighter in the lows. This at home practice levels playing along to YouTube, I doubt I`d notice at band volumes.
