Yep same here. Bass sounds great and on stage sound is excellent. PA fires up and all of a sudden its either hard to hear the bass or its booming out front. IMO the SE should listen to the on-stage sound and simply recreate that out front. I've had one venue where the sound guy does wander about the stage with his tablet during soundcheck and makes adjustments and then goes back to the desk. When we're playing he'll come to the sides of the stage with his tablet. He's also in a band so probably understands it better. Dave

I remember seeing them at their 2nd ever UK gig - the Mean Fiddler in Harlesden. After 2 songs Hillel couldn't cope anymore wot with being off his face (he died not long after...) and left the stage. So the other 3 continued as they had no real choice. And Flea managed to fill the gap beautifully - did his own lines and threw in some of the guitar stuff too which most certainly isn't a sign that he "can barely play"! So unless he's somehow forgotten how to do the bass thing in the intervening 37-8 years, I suspect that he can still do it. And bear in mind, Stanley Clarke invited him onto the ultimate bassathon, Night School, so it would seem that the hatred is largely irrational - the low point of his career being that terrible StarSpangledGizmo he did at the Pooper Bowl...

Just PM me of contact me by email: [email protected] I'm setting up my workplace at home this year and will finish luthiers school by June 2026. Until then I unfortunately don't have time to take orders... So by the end of 2026 I've planned to start building, One day a week besides my daytime job.

Sounds stellar! 😎

I must admit that is an appealing solution Typical that it's the drummer who already has the kit to contend with which takes almost as much effort as the PA, rather than the singer who has only that oh so heavy mic and stand to contend with😂 I can't bear to leave things alone though, if I see that something would make the band look our sound better I'll just do it rather than have all the arguments about who pays and what we should get. Partly it's because I like playing with all the kit and am lucky enough to be able to afford it. My duo partner is very good and takes his fair share of the work. He sets up all the lighting and carries in slightly more than half the kit and has bought the monitors we use. With the band I wouldn't trust them with anything electrical and certainly not with winding any cables, though we did have one guitarist who knew what he was doing, brought a mixer and lights of his own and knew how to coil a cable. I think he joined the band because all my cables have cable ties

What are your irrational prejudices? I have some bonkers ones...

People writing "gb" for gigabytes... "g" is for grammes and "b" is for bits, so "gb" is gram-bits. "G" is for giga and "B" is for bytes, so "GB" denotes gigabytes. Also writing memory as "Gb", which is gigabits. Nothing is measured in gigabits; data rates are often expressed in gigabits per second, "Gbps" or "Gb/s". This is especially prevalent in the case of mobile phones, where there are both data rates (expressed in gigabits per second ("Gbps") and phone memory (expressed in gigabytes, "GB"). However, I did once have someone from a mobile supplier telling me that they were in fact the same thing. Then we have data rates being written as "mb" or "mbps". "m" is for milli (1/1000th). So an "mb" is a milli-bit, which doesn't exist. Whenever I see someone purporting to be knowledgeable about a topic writing "gb" or "mb", I inherently reject their post on the basis they don't even know their units. -
Nice pick-up choice, now I need to add mismatched pole pieces to my irrational prejudices list.

I kind of know what you mean. I can't say I listen to RHCP for enjoyment, but I do use some of his basslines as warmups as they're brilliant string-skipping or slap exercises. -

Try https://www.croxguitars.com/products.html. And yes, bushing is probably a better term than ferrule.

I’ve just got me a secondhand Florence, which is awesome fun to play. A kind chatter on here sent me some worn in flatwound La Belles which feel great. The only downside is that the tone pot needs replacing, it’s not working at all. What surprises me though is the cheap, made in Korea, pots that Sandberg use, I don’t understand why they don’t put a few extra quid into the kitty and put CTS pots in there?

One word: Flea I have literally no idea how the guy who can barely play and sounds awful on almost every record is venerated as a bass god. This isn't something I would share (as there's enough negativity in the universe) but this irrational hatred of a hugely successful musician emerged when I was a music teacher for 5 years.

yep Andertons are great I've bought many times and when a bass developed a truss rod problem, they dealt with it superbly Currently have my Ampeg V4B on interest free (it was ex demo and a great £300 saving over new)

Well I feel a little silly now. "use the search" indeed! 😂 -
I never once turned up my bass at this gig on Saturday I've been a guitarist in a 2 guitar rock band many times. There is no need to keep turning up and up.

My dear friend and extraordinary bassplayer Barend Tromp offered to make a demo video of my bass! I'm very happy with the result, Barend played some killer grooves and is able to really push an instrument to the limits! So finally you guys can hear my "black beauty"! [youtube] Also check out Barend his solo work with contributions of Michael Manring, Pat Mastelotto and Trey Gunn! Barend Tromp spotify
